Mass Schedule Survey

Last Sunday, we asked for your feedback on several proposed Collaborative weekend Mass schedules. If you were away and missed the announcements, please pick up a Mass Schedule Survey at one of the entrances. We are looking for your feedback, since it will be necessary to create a combined weekend Mass schedule for the Reading Catholic Collaborative. The Archdiocese instructs us to establish a Mass schedule that would be manageable by a single priest. The reason for this might not be obvious, but even with two priests assigned to a Collaborative, it is inevitable that one may be away, or one might fall ill— leaving one priest to cover the weekend Masses.

A joint committee of the St. Agnes and St. Athanasius Parish Councils has worked to create a Collaborative Mass schedule that: Will have the least possible impact on our parishioners Will not disrupt the financial status of either parish Can be handled comfortably by two priests under normal conditions

To date, the committee has: Reviewed many factors, including Mass attendance, impact on collections, Mass culture. Determined that a reasonable schedule would be 5 or 6 Masses per weekend, based on our current staffing of two priests. Draftedpossible Mass schedules for consideration as noted in the Survey document.

Please pick up a Survey and share your thoughts about the possible schedules, including: What merits or drawbacks do you note in these possible schedules? What concerns do you have? What suggestions can you offer?

Return your completed questionnaire to the baskets at the doors of the Church, or to either parish office by June 1st. You may also communicate your thoughts electronically by email to: [email protected]

The Projected Timeline for Reading Catholic Mass Schedule Implementation: Parishioner feedback by June 1, 2019. Finalized Mass schedules announced the weekend of June 29/30. New Mass schedules will begin July 6/7, 2019.

Please continue to pray for the success of the St. Agnes/St. Athanasius Collaborative! May we open our hearts to allow the Holy Spirit to work within and among us. May we intentionally seek to lead others to Jesus through our actions and build His Church in our community.

God bless.

Fr. Steve Rock

FAQs- Use of the Funds from the Lower School Sale Dear Parishioners,

In light of the need to fix the upper church ceiling there have been a number of questions regarding the use of funds from sale of the Lower School. We sold the property for $1.2 Million Dollars and when the apartments are complete we will receive an additional $100,000. To finish the renovations on the parish center the parish took out a $500,000 loan from the Archdiocese which was paid back when the property was sold. When you add in the brokers fee and closing costs, we will have received approximately $750,000. Three years ago the parish had an engineering study done on the church, rectory and parish center to prioritize long overdue repairs and maintenance. They estimated the necessary work would be about $2.7 Million dollars with the biggest item replacing the slate roof. After talking with professionals it was decided to keep the roof and repair it each year for $5,000 - $10,000. The Study recommended 5 levels of work from “Emergency Repairs” to completion over the next “5-10” years.

FAQ: Why are we just hearing about this now? When this study was completed in June 2016, it was presented to the parish at all the Masses and posted on our Web Page. On the web page go to Parish Information Block click on Upper Church Ceiling and then click on CAPITAL NEEDS. There you will find the whole report. What funds have been spent to date? $360,000 for repointing the tower and all four walls. $78,000 to remove and replace the old knob & tube wiring, replace the obsolete recessed lighting in the upper church and bring the electric panels up to code. $66,000 to replace the fire alarm system, which in case of a fire will indicate exactly where the problem is located, a great help to the Fire Department.

Total spent to date, $504,000. Just a few years ago the parish conducted a Capital Campaign to address a lot of the issues that are in the report, why are we doing this again? The campaign you asked about was done in 1990-1992 and it never addressed the masonry work, the wiring or the fire alarm. It dealt with underground oil tanks, Parish Center windows replacement and new boilers for the Parish Center, Church and Lower School. We did do a capital campaign which ended in 2015 for the Parish Center renovation. What else needs to be done? Within the next few years the Parish Center roof and boilers will have to be replaced as well as the church boiler. With luck we will not have to address the church heating system for a long time but remember it is 100+ years old.

As the pastor of St. Agnes Parish it is my responsibility not only to be a good spiritual leader but also a steward of the parish’s beautiful campus. I take my responsibility seriously and work closely with the Parish Financial Council as we discuss and prioritize the needs of the parish. The ceiling issue is certainly a problem that has to be addressed but with the spirit that has been shown by two of our Middle School students in raising funds for the repair buy selling “scrunchies” I am full of hope that we will get the job done.

May God continue to bless you, your families and our parish, Fr. Steve Rock
