A N N U A L R E P O R T ! " " # / ! " " $ AS EACH ONE HAS RECEIVED A GIFT, USE IT TO SERVE ONE ANOTHER AS GOOD STEWARDS OF GOD’S VARIED GRACE– 1 Peter 4:10 Poverty in America is a moral and social crisis that threatens the health and well-being of our country. In Santa Clara County, nearly one in four households can’t make ends meet. It’s time to renew our commitment to action on behalf of the poor and vulnerable. Please join Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County as we unite policy-makers and people of good will to find effective solutions to this injustice. The Campaign to Cut Poverty is about who we are as a region. We must no longer ignore the injustice of poverty and the extreme inequality in our “Valley of Heart’s Delight.” We must seize this opportunity to promote changes that promote human dignity and the common good. Pledge to join us. Advocate. Give. Volunteer. Your actions will bring us a step closer to creating a just and compassionate community. To learn more about the Campaign to Cut Poverty, contact Terrie Iacino at (408) 325-5132 [email protected]. Dear Friends of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County, We are pleased to present our annual report to the community for fiscal year 2007-2008. This was a very important year for us as the groundwork was laid for Catholic Charities to launch the Campaign to Cut Poverty with Step Up Silicon Valley, a coalition we are leading of more than 90 service organizations, corporations and government agencies, whose goal is to cut poverty in half by 2020 in Santa Clara County. One of the major issues to overcome is the public’s perception of poverty in our valley. Poverty affects more than the homeless people we all see each and everyday in our parks, neighborhoods and downtown areas of the county. Gregory R. Kepferle We call poverty the level below what households need to make ends meet … with adequate housing, food, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER health coverage, education and financial resources at their disposal. It is work our agency is embracing whole-heartedly and will stop at nothing short of success. This past year was a very busy one in many other ways for Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County. Our budget grew by 35% to $21.5 million dollars … and we ended the year in the black. Our staff grew by 26% to 442 people … while the number of clients we served grew by a staggering 37% to more than 37,000 people. El Toro Youth Center in Morgan Hill joined the agency and serves nearly 500 youth and parents through tutorial services, computer literacy classes, arts and crafts, sports, recreational activities and family workshops. As the demands from the community grow, so do our efforts to meet the needs of the underserved and Paul F. Gentzkow at-risk individuals and families in Santa Clara County. PRESIDENT It all means that our work is not done and that we will continue striving to change lives for good. Thank you to our donors, funders and partners for all your support. 1 OPERATING REVENUE OPERATING EXPENSE 6,716,475 Federal 3,435,461 Economic Development 5,814,977 State 1,826,256 Youth & Family 2,103,611 Local 5,374,576 Education 2,809,460 Older Adults 14,635,063 Total Government Grants 3,846,356 Behavioral Health 2,872,381 Individual Donors 122,916 Community & Advocacy 160,574 Bequests 17,415,025 Subtotal Program Expense 3,909,650 Foundations & Corporate Donors 956,856 Fees for Service 3,280,929 Administrative Expense - 419,437 Investment Income and Other 610,387 Development Expense OUR MISSION 22,115,087 Total Revenue 21,306,341 Total Expense Catholic Charities of Santa 808,746 Change in Net Assets Clara County serves and (Includes additions to restricted net assets) advocates for families and individuals in need, especially those living in poverty.
