Preface This document is a technical annex to Deliverable 3.3 of the MIND-SETS project. This annex follows the same general structure as the main document, but delves deeper into the arguments, tackles the technical issues in greater depth and contains a full reference list. Introduction It was easy to predict mass car ownership but hard to predict Walmart Carl Sagan Previous Deliverables in the MIND SETS projects1 had already pointed to the rise of the “sharing economy” in Europe. For instance, between 2006 and 2014, the number of users of carsharing systems has increased from 0.36 million to 4.95 million. Bike ridership has also experienced a sharp growth over the last 10 years. In a few years’ time, these services have escaped from their niche status, and are arguably moving in the mainstream. Some urban transport planners are already wondering to what extent these new market models will undermine the assumptions of their current work. Moreover, several sectors are already affected by the phenomenon: taxi drivers argue that on-demand ride services are a form of unfair competition, traditional car rental and even car manufacturers are moving in the car sharing business, public transport operators wonder whether these new transport models are competitors or possible strategic allies… Moreover, there are indications that shared mobility may not only replace some forms of private travel, but may also facilitate other forms of private travel. Hence, the net environmental and transport impacts remain contentious. Moreover, whereas the idea of fully autonomous cars looked like pure science fiction just a decade ago, several major players claim that they have developed prototype models that can function in operational circumstances. Although there is a lot of controversy regarding the speed with which autonomous cars will indeed gain important market shares, no one seems to doubt that, in the long run, they will replace human operated vehicles. Paradoxically, although no one questions that their impact will be profound, there is a lot of debate on

In 2005, the Thai government has imposed the regulations upon motorcycle taxi service that included motorcycle taxi drivers’ registration and fare rate. This makes Thailand becoming the first country in the world that regulates motorcycle taxi service. This study examines the motorcycle taxi drivers and service conditions before and after having imposed the regulations. The results reveal that the motorcycle taxi drivers’ behavior and its service system have been changed obviously after the imposition. Also, this study proposes the equation that could represent the system of motorcycle taxi service which could be applied for future planning condition perspective.

Ojek (or ojeg) is an informal public transport in Indonesia in the form of a motorcycle or bicycle, but more commonly in the form of motorcycles. Called informal because its existence is not recognized by the government and there is no permission to operate it. Passengers are usually one person but sometimes can be both. With the price determined by bargaining with the driver first after that the driver will deliver to the desired destination passengers. Train Passenger rail transport is a passenger transport by wheel vehicle specially designed for walking on rail. Trains allow high capacity at short or long distances, but require rails, signals, infrastructure and stations to be built and maintained. Urban transit trains consist of tram, light train, fast transit, commuter train, monorail and cable car. Commuter trains are part of public transportation in urban areas, but provide faster service for suburban and neighboring towns and villages. Trains stop at all stations, located to serve a suburban or small town center. Stations are often combined with a shuttle bus or Parking system and board at each station. Frequencies allow up to several times per hour, and commuter rail systems can be either part of a national cart, or operated by a local transit agency. Helicopters Helicopters are air transport vehicles in the form of aircraft that are heavier than air, winged wings whose rotor is driven by the engine. A helicopter is an aircraft that lifts and is propelled by one or more large horizontal rotor.

Hasan 2 Penn IUR Series on Informality | Motorcycle Taxis in Jakarta, Indonesia INFORMALITY IN URBAN PLANNING In the current era of global urbanization, urban life is impacted by “informality” in the areas of housing and development, social networks and support systems, economics, public health, transportation, and infrastructure. Throughout the emergence of the professional field of urban planning in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, informality was addressed with the general attitude of “other.” In many places in the world, there persists to this day an astounding lack of recognition for the vernacular characteristics and systems of the vulnerable and marginalized communities being planned for across the world. In 1975, the United Nations took an important step in addressing the challenges posed by informality in the developing world by establishing the United Nations Habitat and Human Settlements Foundation (UNHHSF), the first official UN body dedicated to urbanization. In the proceeding decades, the organization of the Habitat conferences elevated alternative viewpoints and brought these issues to mainstream. The New Urban Agenda (NUA) was adopted at Habitat III in Quito, Ecuador in 2016, and later endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly. The NUA complements the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a collection of 17 goals set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 to achieve by 2030. In many nations, cities are leading the effort to work towards the NUA and SDGs.

Approximately 32.6%, 19.3%, and 9.7% of motorcycle taxi drivers reported being involved in a crash, injury crash, and mobile phone related crash respectively. Mobile phone related crashes represent 20.5% of all reported crashes. Logistic and negative binomial regression were used to explore factors influencing mobile phone use while riding and crash frequencies.

The objectives of this research are twofold: to understand patterns of access trips to transit stations and to determine the factors affecting propensity to walk to stations in Bangkok. The results show that most popular access modes are bus, motorcycle taxi, and walking. Within transit catchment area, Bangkok’s share of walking is less than those in other major cities, due to competition from motorcycle taxis. Estimation results of choice model show that distance to station is the most critical factor affecting propensity to walk, and that station-specific characteristics have significant impacts. The Bangkok Transit System Company (BTSC), a wholly privately owned company, operates two elevated rail lines, known as the BTS, under concession from Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), the city’s municipal government. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA), a national public enterprise, oversees the city’s only subway line, which was built and operated by a private joint venture, BMCL, under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model.
