MAIN STAGE WELCOME TO BROADWAY PALM’S 28TH SEASON Dear Valued Season Subscriber: Welcome to Broadway Palm’s 28th Season! Before I get into our excellent lineup, I want to take a moment to reflect on the last couple of months and the COVID-19 pandemic. Like I said in one of my communications with you, as a theatre company we’ve survived floods, hurricanes, 9/11, and several recessions, but we have never had to cease operations for such an extended period of time. The temporary closure impacted my employees, my family and of course, you, our valued customers. While we navigated the challenging times, I was so thankful to many of you for reaching out to me and my team with your words of encouragement and support, but most importantly I was grateful for your trust in my decisions. I had to make some really tough choices, but each was made to ensure that when this was all over, our curtain would rise again and we could provide the same exceptional product you have come to expect from Broadway Palm. Now to what you’ve all been waiting for, our 28th Season full of entertainment that I think you’re going to be very pleased with! We’ll be bringing back Broadway Palm’s number one show of all time Mamma Mia! along with six musicals never before seen on our stage including the all-new musical Happy Days based on the hit TV series, the recent Broadway sensation On Your Feet!, an all-new Victor Legarreta revue Dean Martin Variety Hour, Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn and the 2016 New York Time’s Critic’s Pick A Bronx Tale. We are also going back to Rydell High with the ever-popular Grease and we’re paying tribute to the big voices and big hairdos from the 60s with Beehive the 60’s Musical. And that’s just on the main stage; the Off Broadway Palm Theatre is presenting five hilarious comedies and our Concert Series includes five tribute acts that are sure to be sellouts. I’m very happy to let you know that we will not be raising any prices and you will still receive all of the same great benefits as a Season Subscriber including discounted tickets, first choice of seats and dates before tickets go on sale to the public, complimentary exchanges and more!     Black masculinity and White-cast Sitcoms Unraveling stereotypes in New Girl Marie Zafimehy Supervisor: Alma Persson, Gender Studies, LiU Master’s Programme Gender Studies – Intersectionality and Change Master’s thesis 15 ECTS credits ISRN: LIU-TEMA G/GSIC1-A—19/015-SE Marie Zafimehy 2 Master thesis - Gender, Intersectionality and Change ABSTRACT For decades, situational comedies — commonly named “sitcoms” — have been racially segregated on TV between Black-cast sitcoms and White-cast sitcoms. Extensive research has been led about representation of Black and White masculinities in this segregated context. This master thesis studies what happens when White and Black males are equally casted as main characters in contemporary sitcoms by offering a case-study of the 2011 sitcom New Girl (2011-2017). How is Black masculinity represented in New Girl, and in which ways does it intersect with contemporary societal issues (e.g. racial profiling, Black Lives Matter movement)? This case-study uses tools, methodologies and concepts, drawn from Black and Intersectional feminism as well as Feminist media studies. Based on a 25 episodes sample of the show, it implements Ronald Jackson’s traditional stereotypes classification and “Black masculine identity theory” (Jackson, 2006) to study representations of Black masculinity in New Girl, through its two main Black male characters, Winston and Coach. Given that representations of minorities in popular culture reflect and influence our contemporary society, the results offer new insights about how sitcoms, series and pop- culture productions in general can challenge traditional stereotypes and display a more progressive Black masculinity. The annotations in the booklist include a critical statement about each book as well as a brief description of the content, and--where appropriate--information about quality and composition of illustrations. Some 1,800 titles are included in this publication; they were selected from approximately 8,000 children's books published in the United States between 1985 and 1989 and are divided into the following categories: (1) books for babies and toddlers, (2) basic concept books, (3) wordless picture books, (4) language and reading, (5) poetry.     Remarks from the Chief Executive Officer Lidia Soto-Harmon Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital 59th Annual Meeting Saturday, April 17, 2021 I am Lidia Soto-Harmon your CEO. We have lived through a year that was truly like no other, and hopefully only once in our lifetime. I reflect on all the good works and goodwill our Girl Scouts have generated in our region and I am inspired and humbled. I am proud that our volunteers and staff pivoted quickly to provide a place for girls to learn and grow, even if it meant digital platforms. And our girls were engaged. 35,000 girls attended virtual troop meetings. And almost 50,000 virtual program opportunities were provided, and this is just staff delivery. Imagine the numbers if we included all our troops, service units, and associations. Thank you all for modeling resilience and providing something that felt normal and consistent in a time of such uncertainty for our girls. Our Gold Award Girl Scouts hosted Conversations of Consequence on issues such as racial justice, gender stereotyping, and mental health. For Thinking Day, 300 of our girls and I met virtually with over 30 Girl Scouts from Japan. You should have heard all the girls greeting each other with “kon’nichiwa”. It was our way to celebrate international friendship and the Cherry Blossom Festival. Virtual program opportunities truly do open the world for our girls. Fortunately, our technology was up to the challenge. gsLearn has proven to be an invaluable tool providing more than 26,000 online learning opportunities that successfully instilled confidence in our Girl Scout leaders.
