The marbled dark brown and black color pattern together with the use of submersed leaf litter accumulations for shelter differentiates this species among its congeners. We present information about the biology of C. meridionalis based on data gathered in streams and under captivity, as well as on a dietary analysis. Behavioral observations were made in captivity (aquaria). Dietary analysis was performed based on stomach contents of 38 specimens. The species was found in 8 out of 12 small streams sampled, where specimens were captured predominantly amidst submerged leaf litter. Nine types of behavioral acts were identified, of which “swimming near the substratum” and “charging the substratum for food” were the most frequent. Thirty (~ 79 %) out of the 38 stomachs had food, and the diet was composed of 27 types of food items. Centromochlus meridionalis can be considered a generalist microcarnivore, consuming predominantly authochtonous and allochtonous insects, and other terrestrial invertebrates, crustaceans and fish as well. The use of different water column strata during foraging and the diversity of food items consumed indicate that this small catfish utilizes several feeding tactics. Of the 48 species previously considered valid in the subfamily, only one, Centromochlus steindachneri, was not evaluated in the present study. The phylogenetic analysis generated two most parsimonious trees, each with 202 steps, that support the monophyly of Centromochlinae composed of five valid genera: Glanidium, Gephyromochlus, Gelanoglanis, Centromochlus and Tatia. Although those five genera form a clade sister to the monotypic Pseudotatia, we exclude Pseudotatia from Centromochlinae. The parsimony analysis placed Glanidium (six species) as the sister group to all other species of Centromochlinae. Gephyromochlus contained a single species, Gephyromochlus leopardus, that is sister to the clade Gelanoglanis (five species) + Centromochlus (eight species). -

The new species is diagnosed by having numerous dark rounded blotches over the body and fins, dorsal-fin spine with serrations anteriorly and smooth posteriorly, anal fin of mature males withthree unbranched and seven branched rays, anterior nuchal plate absent and posterior nuchal plate not extended ventrally. The new species is described from a small stream in the Estação Ecológica Serra Geral de Tocantins, a natural reserve in the centre of the Brazilian Cerrado, close to the watershed between the Rio Tocantins and the Rio São Francisco basins. The new species is possibly the sister taxon to the recently described Centromochlus meridionalis from the upper Rio Tapajós. Those two species share with Centromochlus perugiae, from the upper Amazon and upper Paraguay, derived features associated with the modified anal fin in sexually mature males. -

Ribeiro Tatia comprises twenty-five valid species, distributed in the main inland watersheds of South America, including the Orinoco, Essequibo, and coastal rivers of Suriname, Amazon, upper rio Paraná and São Francisco basins. A new species is described from tributaries of upper rio Manuel Alves on uplands of Serra Geral do Tocantins plateau, Tocantins State, Brazil. It is promptly distinguished from all congeners, except Tatia britskii, due to absence of an adipose fin. It differs from T. britskii by the longer caudal peduncle length (24.1–30.5% SL, mean 25.3 vs. 20.0–22.7, mean 20.9); caudal peduncle depth (10.9–16.8 SL, mean 14.1 vs. 9.4–10.5, mean 9.8), and anterior cranial border with mesethmoid width equals its length (vs. width approximately three times its length in T. britskii).
