Amplia Quant Core - December Commentary

Strategy description The certificate invests in European and US equities, based on inputs from Amplia's quantitative asset management model. The exact investment universes are large caps ( STOXX 50), US large caps (S&P 100) and Eurozone mid-caps (the 100 largest companies of Euro STOXX 200 Mid index). There are always 30 shares in the portfolio, with 10 from each of the three sub-universes. The selection of these shares is derived from company-level quantitative and qualitative factors, as implied by the model.

On top of the individual shares, the effective equity exposure may vary between 0 - 100%. The equity exposure may be reduced if the asset allocation component of the quantitative model indicates that a smaller market exposure is warranted. The model follows quantitative signals, mostly of technical or macroeconomic in nature, in definition of the asset allocation. Any market exposure reduction is done by taking short positions in liquid equity index futures.

Manager commentary December finished the year on a positive note. Easing trade tensions, clarity to Brexit and accommodative central banks helped keep investors happy. From the benchmark components, Total gained 1.20%, S&P 500 Net Total Return 1.02% and Euro STOXX 200 Mid Cap Net 1.55%.

The strategy lost 0.41% in December, mainly due to a more cautious positioning and adverse currency effects. The asset allocation signal remained at 100% for the full month. The greatest positive contribution came from ConocoPhillips amid improving oil prices. The worst performer was Fedex that slashed its 2020 outlook whilst reporting its quarterly earnings on 17th December, as the company struggles to adapt to the rise in e-commerce.
