  • How the British Have Made Southwest France Their Home the Local [email protected] @Thelocalfrance
How the British have made southwest France their home The Local [email protected] @thelocalfrance 6 October 2017 08:26 CEST+02:00 brits in france Share this article Photo: AFP The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of western and southwest France is home to the most Brits of all France's regions. Here’s a breakdown of how they have made the region, or at least part of it, their home. Nouvelle-Aquitaine was recently formed when the government redrew the administrative map of France, bringing together the old regions of Aquitaine, Poitou- Charentes and Limousin. The super-region stretches from the Spanish border in the southwest up the Atlantic coast to La Rochelle and deep into central France to take in the departments of Correze and Creuse. It includes departments, that have long been associated with migrating British citizens, such as Dordogne (Dordogneshire to many), and Charente. The Numbers: There are some 39,000 British citizens living in the giant Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, a new report from French statistics agency INSEE reveals. That represents 0.7 percent of the region's overall population and means that after the Portuguese, Brits represent the second biggest community of foreigners. Those 39,000 represent 26 percent of the 150,000 Brits officially registered as living in France. That makes Nouvelle-Aquitaine the region of France that is home to the most Brits. In second place is neighbouring Occitanie, which is home to 25,500 Brits, and in third place is the greater Paris region of Ile-de-France where 19,500 Brits have set up home.

  • Regional Inflation During the French Revolution
CAE Working Paper #04-06 Regional Inflation During the French Revolution by Levon Barseghyan Francesca Molinari and François Velde May 2004 . Regional In‡ation During The French Revolution Levon Barseghyan Francesca Molinari François Velde December 15, 2000 Abstract Shortly after the Revolution of 1789 France experienced a period of major hyper- in‡ation, which lasted until 1796, when the French government abolished the paper money and returned to the specie. In 1798 the French government ordered the local authorities in all departments to construct the aggregate price index. Even though similar in trend, these price series display striking di¤erences both in level and short run dynamics. Some of these di¤erences are undoubtedly caused by the absence of a uniform rule for constructing the price indices, and possibly are magni…ed by such distortionary factors as the laws of maximum, the heavy concentration of military con- tracts in particular locations, and the di¤erent taxation schemes. However, level of economic integration in 18th century France had a major impact on the price evo- lution during the Revolution. In this paper, using di¤erent proxies for a measure of economic distance, we show that price formation among “close”departments displayed signi…cantly higher correlation than the one among “distant”departments. 1 Introduction Shortly after the Revolution of 1789 France experienced a period of major hyperin‡ation, which lasted until 1796, when the French government abolished the paper money and re- turned to the specie. In 1798 the French government ordered the local authorities in all 1 departments to construct the aggregate price index to be used in restructuring the govern- ment debt, as well as in recalculating other obligations made in Assignats (paper money).

As a result, some areas experienced a signi…cant change in the composition of the local elites whereas in others the pre-revolutionary social structure remained virtually intact. In this study, we trace the consequences of the émigrés’ ‡ight on economic performance at the local level. We instrument emigration intensity with local temperature shocks during an in‡ection point of the Revolution, the summer of 1792, marked by the abolition of the constitutional monarchy and bouts of local violence. Our …ndings suggest that émigrés have a non monotonic e¤ect on comparative development. During the 19th century, there is a signi…cant negative impact on income per capita, which becomes positive from the second half of the 20th century onward.

  • Observatory on Public Water and Sanitation Services
Observatory on public water and sanitation services Overview of services and of their performance February 2012 x CONTEXT Initiated in 2009, the observatory on water and sanitation services offers national online access (www.services.eaufrance.fr) to public data on the organisation, management and performance of services. These elements are used to evaluate the economic, technical, social and environmental quality of services on an objective, recognised basis, shared by all stakeholders in the water sector. In the long term, the observatory will thus go beyond simple reasoning in terms of the price of water and cover all the technical and financial issues related to services. Using the observatory's data, this initial overview offers markers on the organisation, quality and price of water services and collective sanitation. It also clarifies the sustainable assets management issues facing services. x AUTHOR(S) AND CONTRIBUTOR(S) Maria Salvetti, economist, ONEMA, [email protected] Contributor : Christophe Wittner, engineer, IRSTEA-ENGEES, [email protected] Reproduction rights: Public Keywords: Public water and sanitation services, performance Geographic cover: France Geographic level: National Level of interpretation: Professional Language: French Circulated by: Office national de l’eau et des milieux aquatiques (Onema – French National Agency for Water and Aquatic Environments) x ABSTRACT Key figures of the first overview of services and their performance More than 31,000 water and collective sanitation services: 14,217 drinking water and 17,228 collective sanitation services; 4,500 intermunicipal groups in charge of water and/or sanitation services. Exploiting exogenous regional variations in the adoption of steam engines across France, the study establishes that in contrast to conventional wisdom that views early industrialization as a predominantly deskilling process, the industrial revolution was conducive for human capital formation, generating broad increases in literacy rates and education attainment.
