Sie ist eine Ini- tiative des Aleksander-Brückner-Zentrums für Polenstudien, das im Herbst 2013 als kooperatives Projekt der Universitäten Halle und Jena eröffnet wurde. Das Zentrum widmet sich der interdisziplinären Erforschung historischer und gegenwärtiger Formationen polnischer Staatlichkeit, Gesellschaft, Sprache und Kultur. Darüber hinaus trägt es durch den Master-Studiengang Interdisziplinäre Polenstudien zur universitären Lehre bei, und es wirkt durch ein populärwissenschaft- liches und kulturelles Programm in die breitere Öffentlichkeit hinein. Wie lässt sich heute die Erforschung des historischen und gegen- wärtigen Polen konzipieren? – Wir bedienen uns eines Kunstgriffs und verstehen Polen, inspiriert von jüngeren Entwürfen der Regional- studien (Area Studies), als eine Region, die sich je nach historischem, kulturellem oder politischem Zusammenhang immer wieder neu kon- stituiert oder in anderen Regionen aufgeht: So kann Polen mal Teil der mittelalterlichen westlichen Christenheit sein, mal für die frühneuzeit- liche Staatenunion Polen-Litauen mit ihren vielen Völkern, Sprachen und religiösen Bekenntnissen stehen, mal zu expandierenden Impe- rien gehören, mal globale Diaspora sein oder gegenwärtig Mitglied der Europäischen Union. Verknüpft mit den vielfältigen Optionen der Zugehörigkeit ist die Frage danach, wer wann und wo als polnisch wahrgenommen wird oder sich selbst als polnisch begreift. Es ist unser Anliegen, Polen jen- seits nationaler Paradigmen im Plural zu denken – in ethnischer, reli- giöser, sprachlicher, sozialer und rechtlicher Hinsicht. Die Reihe nutzt unterschiedliche fachliche Zugänge, um zu erkunden, was im einzel- nen Fall polnische Gesellschaft und Kultur(en) ausmachte bzw. aus- macht. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt dabei politischen Umbrüchen, Grenzverschiebungen und Migrationen. Darüber hinaus sollen durch gezielte Perspektivenwechsel – orientiert an Kategorien wie Sprache, Klasse, Gender oder Religion – neue Erkenntnisse gewonnen werden. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Überlegungen reicht das Profil der Reihe – ohne jegliche revisionistische Intention – geographisch weit über das heutige Staatsterritorium Polens hinaus. Die einzelnen Bei- träge gelten auch jenen Ländern und Völkern, die historisch und gegen- 7 Über die Buchreihe wärtig eng mit Polen verbunden sind und eigene Forschungsperspekti- ven entwickelt haben. Aus diesem Zugang resultiert ein internationaler wissenschaftlicher Austausch, der in eine multiperspektivische Be- trachtung Polens in seinen europäischen und internationalen Verflech- tungen mündet. Im Sinne der Internationalisierung wird die Reihe zumindest teil- weise auf Englisch erscheinen; deutschsprachige Beiträge zielen darauf ab, einem breiteren deutschen Publikum neueste geistes- und gesell- schaftswissenschaftliche Forschung zu Polen zugänglich zu machen. Um einen hohen Standard zu gewährleisten, werden alle Texte vor der Veröffentlichung von externen GutachterInnen kommentiert und auf dieser Grundlage überarbeitet. Ein wissenschaftlicher Beirat ist im Aufbau begriffen. Wir danken der Stiftung für deutsch-polnische Zusammenarbeit, der Deutsch-Polnischen Wissenschaftsstiftung und dem Deutschen Aka- demischen Austauschdienst für die Initiative, ein neues Zentrum für Polenstudien ins Leben zu rufen. Halle und Jena, im August 2015 Die HerausgeberInnen 8 About the series The present volume marks the beginning of the series Poland: Culture – History – Society / Polen: Kultur – Geschichte – Gesellschaft. It is an initiative by the Aleksander Brückner Center for Polish Studies that was inaugurated in fall 2013 as a cooperative project of the Universities of Halle-Wittenberg and Jena. The Center is involved in the interdis- ciplinary research of both historical and present-day developments in Polish politics, society, language, and culture. Moreover, it is respon- sible for the Master’s program Interdisciplinary Polish Studies, and it reaches out into the broader public with a popular academic and cul- tural program. How can we nowadays conceptualize research on historical and present-day Poland? Inspired by recent developments in area stud- ies, we understand Poland as a region that repeatedly constitutes itself anew, depending on historical, cultural, or political conditions. Thus, Poland can be understood as part of medieval Western Christianity, or as the early modern Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth with its nu- merous ethnic groups, languages, and religious denominations. It can also be part of expanding empires, be found in the global diaspora, or currently as a member of the European Union. The question as to what, when, and where Poland and all things Pol- ish have been in the past and are today is closely connected with these multiple options of affiliation. It is our aim to transgress national par- adigms and to think of Poland in the plural – in ethnic, religious, lin- guistic, social, and legal terms. The series strives to integrate methodo- logical approaches and modes of thinking from a variety of disciplines in order to explore what exactly determines Polish society and cul- ture(s) in each case. Special attention is paid to shifts in political rule, the redrawing of borders, and periods of migration. The reflection on, and integration of, alternative narrative categories such as class, gender, religion, and nation is also of importance to this end. As a result of these considerations, the series geographically tran- scends the current territory of Poland – without any revisionist inten- tions. Thus, the contributions of the series are also devoted to those countries and people that are historically and presently closely con- nected with Poland and have developed their own research perspec- tives. We therefore aim at an international academic exchange and a 9 About the series multi-perspective investigation of Poland in its European and interna- tional entanglements. In that sense, the series will appear – at least partly – in English; contributions in German aim at making accessible current research on Poland from the Humanities and the Social Sciences to a wider Ger- man public. To maintain a high standard, all texts are peer- reviewed. An international and interdisciplinary editorial board will be estab- lished soon.
