The study is interested in assessing whether the Roman Catholic Church in the Diocese of Lindi is fulfilling its mandated role of diakonia – the ministry of service, philanthropy (initiatives for communal good focusing on excellence of human life), and Christian love to ones neighbor and its role, commitment and application within the Diocese. In addition, this research will focus on the assessment of the fulfillment of the diocese‟s diaconal role of empowering the rural poor to “develop their capacity and skills so that they become competent decision makers with their confidence to act on their choices” (Roy and Hartigan 2008:67). In this study, efforts are made to study poverty from the reality experienced by the poor in the Diocese of Lindi. The component themes in this research study are: The research design of this study and the literature review; relative to Diakonia; Catholic Social Teaching of the Roman Catholic Church; and Bryant Myers‟ framework for Transformational Development. The experience of poverty, diakonia, Catholic social teaching and transformational development by the respondents, with specific reference to the selected parishes in the Diocese of Lindi. A reflection of the reality of poverty from what emerged in literature with empirical qualitative research that is conducted among the poor. This research study suggests a model of Diakonia, which is contextual, relevant and liberating. v Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za Focusing on the Scriptures, the social teachings of the Church, the literature and listening to the poor during interview process, this research proposes that the Diocese of Lindi implement a model consistence with Diakonia that takes the following seriously: 1. The role of the church is mandated to carry out as it ministers to the poor in deed and word, guided by Christian love, to enable the poor to lead a better life (Pieterse 2001:111). Also, an African worldview1, which focuses on communal and systemic approaches to life and its problems. 2. The Roman Catholic Church deals with social, economic and political issues (Zalot and Guevin 2008:46). Socio-economic and political dimensions of life, with the recognition that poverty is structural and if the problems of the poor are to be dealt with effectively, the socio-economic and political structures are also to be addressed and transformed. 3. The reflection of concern for seeking positive change in the whole of human life, socially and spiritually (Myers 1999:3, 14). The poor, as living human documents, should not only be read and interpreted, but also taken seriously and regarded as central to the process of community development. The poor are to play the central role in the transformation of society. They are to be involved in the “functional priesthood of all believers” (Stevenson-Moessner 2005:21). 1 Duncan Olumbe (2008:1-5) explains worldview as the set of assumptions and presuppositions that a person holds consciously or unconsciously about how they perceive the reality. Worldview is the underlying set of ideas that enables people to cope with life in a given culture. There is a very close relationship between worldview and religion. African worldview is generally classified under Primal worldview, which is the set of underlying presumptions about life in a Traditional society. The following are the useful basic themes in exploring the African worldview: Supreme Being - in traditional African society, there is implied and wide spread belief in a Supreme Being. African tribal societies are rich in the awareness of a Supreme Being to the extent that no native – born African is unaware of the God’s existence. The Cosmos - Traditional Africans believe that a Supreme Being created the cosmos. Human Beings – in African tribal societies, the Supreme Being created human beings. Community – African traditional societies place very high premium on communities. Knowledge – Arising from the belief in a world full of hostile spiritual powers, every physical event is believed to have an underlying spiritual cause. Ethics – The understanding of what is good and bad is based on the traditions passed down from the ancestors. This research agrees with African worldview of community that “Africans tend to find their identity and meaning in life through being part of their extended family, clan and tribe. There is a strong feeling of common participation in life, a common history, and a common destiny” (Olumbe 2008:4). This researcher agrees and affirms that people in Tanzania live the life of communion in the sense of the above explanation of the African worldview.

Pecknold, Ph.D. Both St. Augustine and Joseph Ratzinger have written in detail on the resurrection of the body, a topic which was the center of a lively debate in the 20th century. St. Augustine formed his theology of resurrection in part as a response to the dualistic devaluation of the body present in Platonism, a theme which Ratzinger grappled with in his writings on the resurrection. This study seeks to answer the question as to whether, and to what extent, Joseph Ratzinger’s theology of the resurrection of the body can be described as “Augustinian.” In order to do this, four “Augustinian characteristics” are first educed by a detailed study of Augustine’s own theology of resurrection, paying particular attention to how Augustine deals with Platonism (a topic central to the 20th century debate on the resurrection in which Ratzinger was involved). Then, Ratzinger’s theology of resurrection is considered under the headings of these “Augustinian characteristics” in order to determine how, and to what extent, Ratzinger’s views can be described as “Augustinian.” This study shows that Ratzinger’s theology of resurrection can be termed “Augustinian” in that the key characteristics of Augustine’s mature eschatology come more and more to the fore in each successive Ratzingerian writing on the resurrection.

    Revelation and Claims to Finality: Assumptions Underlying Fundamentalism in Christianity and Islam * By Hans Zirker Nowadays many different types of groups, movements and tendencies are called ‘fundamentalist'; in using this word, one is not employing an unambiguous term to de- scribe something definite, but rather a vague signal to indicate a variety of outlooks, which often do not have much more in common than that they stand out from their sur- roundings by their disparagement of modern ideas, together with uncompromising claims to certainty and suspicion of the multiplicity of possible positions that are open to adoption.1 However, the widespread discussion of 'fundamentalism' makes it clear that from the outset this word is rooted in Christianity;2 today, as previously, it still usually re- fers to tensions and confrontations existing within different churches.3 When people nowadays speak of religious 'fundamentalists', in a wider sense, particularly with regard to Islam, the question arises of whether this is based merely on a general expansion of the concept, or whether perhaps there is a deeper underlying structural relationship be- tween the two religions, a relationship which could reveal a great deal of the theology of both sides. In order for this to be examined, the problem must however be investigated more from the historical point of view and in more specific theological terms, than would be possible solely by the use of the term 'fundamentalism'. Many citizens were aware of the pan- demic but did not have clear picture of its effect on the patients, the frontliners, and the society as a whole. Priory Election Chapter Postponed In the priory house, the initial virus scare came when the government reported the first infected case last March 15th. Around that time Sr. Grace Mujuni, subprioress and priory treasurer, was in Dar Es Salaam which is 1,085 kilometers from Peramiho. The article shows how the role of Peter as the official witness to the resurrection of Jesus Christ continues to be neglected by such scholars as Martin Hengel, Christian Grappe, and Rudolf Pesch. Paul, Mark, Luke (in both his Gospel and Acts), and John offer historical and theological grounds for interpreting Peter’s primary (but not exclusive) role in emerging Christianity as that of spreading and gathering the community through the power of his Easter mes- sage. The article concludes by suggesting how the Petrine witness to Easter expresses itself in the ministry of the bishop of Rome. S’ils existent aussi dans des confessions et des religions diverses, seuls seront examinés ici ceux qui concernent l’Église catholique. Parmi les plus significatifs figurent un fort déclin dans la participation à des activités religieuses comme les célébrations eucharistiques dominicales, surtout chez les jeunes, une pénurie presque catastrophique de prêtres ordonnés, une perte de prestige et d’influence de l’enseignement dispensé par l’Église. Ces symptômes varient en intensité selon les pays, mais les statistiques indiquent qu’ils se multiplient. Nombre de ces problèmes sont attribuables à l’extrême vélocité de changements qui surviennent partout et à l’apparente inaptitude de l’Église à s’adapter, en raison notamment de son attachement à la pensée néo-scolastique et à la tradition tridentine.
