However, BOR_HeadC=BOR_HeadD=BOR_HeadC=BOR_HeadD/HeadC the photosynthetic pathway has been studied in only c. 5% of all orchid species. Here we extend the survey to 1079 orchid species, mainly from Colombia, by assessing the presence of CAM based on the carbon isotopic signature BOR_Extract3=BOR_HeadA=BOR_Extract1=BOR_HeadA (δ 13C values) of herbarium specimens. Ninety-six species, representing 8.9% of those analysed, had δ 13C values less EDI_HeadA=EDI_HeadB=EDI_HeadA=EDI_HeadB/HeadA negative than −20‰, indicating CAM.

  • New Colombian Species of Dracula and Masdevallia: Pleurotallidinae (Orchidaceae)
NEW COLOMBIAN SPECIES OF DRACULA AND MASDEVALLIA: PLEUROTALLIDINAE (ORCHIDACEAE) Nicolás Peláez* Elsy Buitrago-Delgado** Gary Meyer*** Abstract: Dracula rojasii, D. senex-furens, D. callithrix, and Masdeva- llia virgo-rosea, four proposed new Colombian species of Pleurotha- llidinae, are described. Affinities and taxonomic notes on these new species are presented. Additionally these four species, plus another recently described taxon, Dracula dens-canis, are categorized as en- dangered species using the UICN criteria. KEY WORDS: Dracula rojasii, D. senex-furens, D. callithrix, D. dens-canis, Mas- devallia virgo-rosea, Pleurothallidinae, Orchidaceae, endangered species Neo- tropic, Colombia. INTRODUCTION: The genera Dracula and Masdevallia have received the most taxonomic and hor- ticultural attention among the Pleurothallidinae. At present nearly 120 species are recognized in the genus Dracula and approximately 500 within the genus Masdevallia. Several species from both genera have been recently described from Central and South America (Luer 1997, 1998, 1999, Königer 1999, Peláez 2007). Here we describe Dracula rojasii, D senex-furens, D. callithrix and Masdevallia virgo-rosea, four new species from Colombia. We propose to include all four plus the recently described D. dens-canis N. Pelaez in the red list of Colombian endangered species using the UICN criteria. * Sociedad Colombiana de Orquideología, A.A. 4725, Medellín-Colombia and Department of Biological Sciences, Northwestern University, IL, USA. Definitions of terms used in the Orchid Society of Canberra Spring Show Schedule. These definitions are intended to clarify the classes used for judging in the Spring Orchid Show. Many of the genera included in this list are currently regarded as synonyms, however as more extensive DNA analysis is undertaken a better understanding of the generic and higher level relationships is developing. DNA analysis has also allowed a better understanding of some species and species complexes. Australian Native As stated in the Show Schedule, David L. After the publication of the most recent and comprehensive treatment of the Orchidaceae in the Manual de Plantas de Costa Rica, new species continue being discovered in the country on a regular basis. Novelties in Acianthera, Epidendrum, Lepanthes, Masdevallia, Pleurothallis, and Specklinia are discussed. We present eight new records including the reconsideration of Epidendrum concavilabium (as different from E.

  • GENERA PLEUROTHALLIDINARUM: an Updated Phylogenetic Overview of Pleurothallidinae

KARREMANS Lankester Botanical Garden, University of Costa Rica, P.O. Box 302-7050 Cartago, Costa Rica. Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden, The Netherlands • [email protected] ABSTRACT. Subtribe Pleurothallidinae with just over 5000 species is possibly the most species-rich of all orchids. It has been growing steadily for more than two centuries, but the last three decades have been especially active in terms of systematic and phylogenetic studies in the group. The growth in species numbers has been accompanied by the marked increase in generic and infrageneric concepts. Nevertheless, Pleurothallidinae are plagued with cases of convergent and divergent morphology, and phylogenetic relatedness is not always apparent. This opens the door to controversial changes in generic circumscriptions that are considered too inclusive by some and too exclusive by others. A grave consequence of these disagreements is the difficulty of assessing which and how many species actually belong to each genus. Here an attempt is made to place generic names among their close relatives as a first step to re-evaluating the whole subtribe. KEY WORDS: Acianthera, Anathallis, Dilomilis, Masdevallia, Octomeria, Phloeophila, Pleurothallis, Restrepia, Specklinia, systematics Introduction.
