Diese Korrespondenten stellen aufgrund ihres Fachwissens in Eigenverantwortung ein Verzeichnis der wichtigsten Monographien, Sammelbände und Aufsätze wissenschaftlicher Fachzeitschriften ihres jeweiligen Landes zusammen, die, soweit ihr Umfang den vorgegebenen Rahmen von Sociolinguisti- ca nicht sprengt, im zweiten Jahr nach Erscheinen in dieses Jahrbuch aufgenommen werden. Sociolinguistica is striving to build a network of correspondents for Europe as a whole. These correspondents are responsible for creating a register, on the basis of their own professional journals in their countries. Within the guidelines of Sociolinguistica, these publications are then included in the yearbook within two years of their publication.     Evidence of Lexical Re-Borrowing in the Spoken English of First Generation Finnish-Australians GREG WATSON 1. Introduction Lexical borrowing from one language into another is a natural consequence of any language contact situation and has been extensively discussed. The earliest seminal work for the latter half of the previous century is that of Haugen (1950) and Weinreich (1953). Lexical borrowing occurs when a speaker needs to account for some form of semantic gap in either LI or L2. For instance, a Finn who has emigrated to Australia will have been confronted with new cultural experiences. S/he will have promptly needed to acquire a broadened vocabulary, using words that may not have a Finnish equivalent. Hence, various words are borrowed from Australian English into the Finnish spoken at home, or with other Finnish immigrants, when discussing a particular cultural difference at hand. Equally so, Finns will bring new concepts with them that they will introduce into Australian culture. For instance, amongst English speaking people it is a little known fact that sauna derives from Finnish. Instances of borrowings, where the minority language group consistently borrows from the host language group and vice versa, are well documented. However, little attention, if any, has been paid to the phenomenon of re-borrowing, where, for example, a word originally borrowed from Australian English into Finnish is then re-used (re• borrowed) in the spoken English of the Finns, albeit in a slighdy different phonological and/or morphological form, when conversing with native speakers of Australian English.   • Post-Socialist Diaspora Policies: Is There a Central-European Diaspora Policy Path?1
    Eszter Kovács Post-Socialist Diaspora Policies: Is There a Central-European Diaspora Policy Path?1 Abstract: The paper raises the question whether there is a certain diaspora policy model that is typical for Central European states. Based on the findings, the paper argues that although post-socialist states have very similar paths in relating to and engaging their diaspora communi- ties abroad, these policies are shaped by diverse political contexts, considerations, and expecta- tions, as well as by different experiences in the diaspora – homeland relations. More specifically, the research identifies four points where a detailed qualitative analysis points out differences in these states’ diaspora policies behind the similar structures: the effects of special/benefit/status laws, the politicization of external voting rights, the symbolic aspects of diaspora policy, and the level of awareness of the new (post-2000, labor migrant) diaspora. Diaspora politics, engagement practices, and homeland – diaspora relations have been acquiring increasing attention within diaspora studies. In recent years, there has been a proliferation of theoretical approaches on diaspora policy typologies, both from deduc- tive and from inductive perspectives.2 This paper attempts to contribute to the existing scholarly work on diaspora policy models, by offering critical evaluation on diaspora policy models in the Central European context. The paper raises the question whether there is a certain diaspora policy model or type that is typical for all the Central Euro- pean states. Based on the findings, the paper argues that although post-socialist states have very similar paths in relating to and engaging their diaspora communities abroad, these policies are shaped by diverse political contexts, considerations, and expectations, as well as by different experiences in the diaspora – homeland relations.

It puts forward the case that, with regard to naturalistic situations, the hypothesis has the status of both “not proven” and unfalsified. The article analyzes a number of reasons for this situation, including the effects of multi-competence, which remove any possibility that competence in more than one language can ever be identical to monolingual competence. With regard to the formal instructional setting, it points to many decades of research showing that, as critical period advocates acknowledge, in a normal schooling situation, adolescent beginners in the long run do as well as younger beginners. The article laments the profusion of definitions of what the critical period for language actually is and the generally piecemeal nature of research into this important area. In particular, it calls for a fuller integration of recent neurolinguistic perspectives into discussion of the age factor in second language acquisition research.     SECTION: HISTORY LDMD I HUNGARIAN INFLUENCE UPON ROMANIAN PEOPLE AND LANGUAGE FROM THE BEGINNINGS UNTIL THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY PÁL Enikő, Assistant Professor, PhD, „Sapientia” University of Târgu-Mureş Abstract: In case of linguistic contacts the meeting of different cultures and mentalities which are actualized within and through language are inevitable. There are some common features that characterize all kinds of language contacts, but in describing specific situations we will take into account different causes, geographical conditions and particular socio-historical settings. The present research focuses on the peculiarities of Romanian – Hungarian contacts from the beginnings until the sixteenth century insisting on the consequences of Hungarian influence upon Romanian people and language. Hungarians induced, directly or indirectly, many social and cultural transformations in the Romanian society and, as expected, linguistic elements (e.g. specific terminologies) were borrowed altogether with these. In addition, Hungarian language influence may be found on each level of Romanian language (phonetic, lexical etc.), its contribution consists of enriching the Romanian language system with new elements and also of triggering and accelerating some internal tendencies. In the same time, bilingualism has been a social reality for many communities, mainly in Transylvania, which contributed to various linguistic changes of Romanian language not only in this region, but in other Romanian linguistic areas as well. Hungarian elements once taken over by bilinguals were passed on to monolinguals, determining the development of Romanian language.
