    Sheep and Enclosure in Sixteenth-Century Northamptonshire* By JOHN MARTIN Abstract It is commonly accepted that there was a slackening of the enclosure movement, if not outright reconversion to arable, in England in the latter half of the sixteenth century. This is usually ascribed to lower wool prices making shecp-grazing less attractive. There are difficulties with this pcrspective linking prices and enclosure activity directly. The example of Northampton- shire, a county in the forefront of enclosure, suggests that there was no trend away from sheep-farming. Two surveys of sheep numbers on enclosed pasture, conducted in 1547 and 1564, indicate that sheep-grazing spread throughout the county, and that grazing was concentrated on deserted village sites. Whilc there was some reduction in the size of large flocks, this was more than balanced by the proliferation of smaller flocks - overall sheep numbers increased in this pcriod. By the end of the century, sheep flocks were grazing on enclosed pasture in half of thc parishes in Northamptonshirc. It considers the relationship between allegiance and popular religion and culture. It aims to provide a regional case study of popular reactions to the war, with particular reference to recent theories of allegiance, which have emphasised the role played by religion and culture. Although the approach is broadly chronological, religion and culture are discussed mainly in the first half of the thesis, and popular allegiance in the second. Chapter One surveys popular religion and culture in the region from c. 1603 to 1638. Chapter Two characterises popular politics on the eve of the Civil War. Chapter Three deals with popular religion and culture in the late 1630s and during the war. But we start by welcoming two new families to our community. Welcome to Tommy and Ashley and their 3 children who have moved into 3 The Green, Lois Weedon and to James and Deborah Thurman and their two children who are soon to move into 17 High Street, Lois Weedon. Welcome to our community and I hope you enjoy living here. A lot of space is devoted in this edition to one of my sponsors - The Parish Council. Firstly we have included a summary of ALL the reports that were presented at the Parish Annual Meeting in May then a report from Council‟s AGM which occurred the following week and finally as a result of the most recent council election resulting in vacancies on the council, there is an advertisement for candidates to be co-opted to fill the vacant positions.     Chaucer, St Loy, and the Celts Andrew Breeze University of Navarre, Pampiona Although St Loy the smith was one of the popular saints of late medieval Europe, the British evidence for his legend has never been full y described. In its common form the legend tells how St Loy, while working as a blacksmith, calmed a dangerously rearing horse (believed possessed by the Devil) with the sign of the cross, cut off its leg, shod the leg, and then attached it to the horse again without ill effect. This story was known to Chaucer and St Thomas More, both of whom allude to the saint's power with horses. Other references to the legend in Britain occur in sources as diverse as English art, Welsh poetry, and Protestant polemic. However, in spite of its popularity, this story has been neglected by Anglicists and others, perhaps because it existed almost entirely in oral form. There certainly seems to be no narrative written version of it in medieval British sources. In fact the oral nature of the legend receives striking confinnation from modern Irish and Scottish Gaelic folklore, where the account of the miraculous shoeing. without mention of St Loy, forms the first part of the tale Gabha an (Suic, 'The Smith of the Ploughshare'. Over the last hundred years or so this story has been coll ected from most parts of Ireland by folklore scholars, as well as in a Scottish Gaelic version from Tifee in the Inner Hebrides. We can assume that the tale of the miraculous shoeing was as familiar in medieval English spoken tradition as it has been in the spoken tradition of modem Gaelic communities.

    Weedon St Loys Priory and Parish A History St Mary and St Peter Lois Weedon A Village History Acknowledgement This Parish History was originall y compliled by Kathleen Lewis and abridged into this current form by Sue Edwards one time resident of Lois Weedon. Kathleen Lewis was the wife of a former Vicar of Weedon Lois with Plumpton and Moreton Pinkney. The date of original publication of her “Weedon St Loys: Priory and Parish” histroy is now lost in the mists of time but it was reprinted “in her memory as a token of regard and affection by the parishioners in 1978, the year of her death on the 26 January.” Twenty years on, none of Mrs Lewis’ valuable historical research has been questioned or indeed corroborated; her work has simply been edited to meet the demands of a new era, when even historians appreciate a shorter read. Sources of information acknowledged by Mrs Lewis “Miss Dorothy Done of Hythe and the late Mr Aris Tinkner of London for the fruits of their researches which were made available to me; to Mr Cecil Hinton and Mrs Sidney Daniels for the information they have given; to Sir Sacheverell Sitwell, Mrs George Thompson, Mr Edward Poole and Mrs Frank Elkinton for the loan of books and documents.” The Historiocal Background The modern village is known by two names – Weedon Lois or Lois Weedon. The use of both is common – maps say one thing, road signs and the Post Office another and the villagers appear to be divided on the correct order. Back in Saxon times it was called simply Wedone – an Anglo-Saxon name meaning “a hill with a temple”.

The next campaign is litter clearance and Jenny Wilde is organising a team of volunteers to achieve this.
