VOLUNTEERING IN THE CAVE PARK GRABOVAČA,PERUŠIĆ, CROATIA Cave park Grabovača The cave park is managed by the Public Institution for the Management of Geomorphological Monuments of Nature “Cave park Grabovača”. Grabovača is the elevation of the mid –Velebit, located at 770 m above sea level near the karst basin of the river Lika.From there, you can seen wide panorama of the karst plateu with Lika River canyon, but as well the historical old town Perušić. The area of the park is characterized by a great diversity of ecosystems and habitats, and a large number of speleological objects in a small area – 9 speleological objects.Its many underground karst forms make up a qurter of the total number of protected cave facilities in Croatia. The Public Institution is established in 2006 with activities of protection, mainteance, utilization and promoting of geomorphological monuments of nature in the area of Perušić. Currently PI has four employees – director of the PI, scientific and research assistant – geographer – geoecologist, supervisor and economist. Since establishement, PI conducted many project related to speleological, biospeleological, geological, geomorphological and biological research. In the year, 2012. PI started with the process of enlargement of the park boundaries (from 595,5ha to 5.500ha) and re-categorization in the category of the regional park. In addition, PI is conducting awareness raising actions involving local citizens and volunteers from all over Europe. The main aim of the PI is that nature conservation must be integral: based on the protection of species and their habitats, as well as monitoring and controlling of the processes and activities that threaten the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.PI work a lot on education and has designed program of ecological-educational workshops for pupils. Most of the visitors in the park are children and pupils but during the summer seasons park is visited by many foreign tourists. Perušić is just 1 km away from A1 highway entrance. Within municipality we can find various coffee places and stores,tennis, football and basketball playgrounds. The population of the place is 2600 and it lies at approximately 550 m above sea level.Perušić has excelent traffical connection towards south and east – Zgareb and Split are within 2 hours drive, and there is railway station and bus station. So a hat, sun protection cream and sunglasses, loose and light colored clothing is necessary. Eveninigs tend to be cool; a sweater will be needed. MONEY The official unit of currency is the Kuna (HRK), current exchange rate is 1 euro=7.58HRK. The closest bank and ATM (cash machine) are in the Perušić, so try to get some some Kunas before coming to Perušić. To give you an idea, a small bottle of water (0,5l) costs 5kn, a beer in shops about 5kn, chicken meet (1kg) 25-30kn and a telephone card costs between 25 and 100kn. HOW TO ARRIVE TO PERUŠIĆ There are different ways of coming to Perušić: By bus – there is a bus station in Perušić, you must ask for the direct line By train – there is also a train station in Perušić. .

Over the past few decades, Congeria populations suffered a steep decline across their range, as a result of human activities. Here, we identify the most pressing issues concerning the current conservation status of Congeria and identify key priorities for its scientific study. The building of dams and other hydrotechnical constructions have led to a significant decrease in the water inputs that used to supply underground systems where Congeria lives, contributing to a reduction of the cave habitats feasible for bivalve settlement. This is relatively well documented in Popovo polje where, as a result of hydrotechnical interventions on Trebisnjica river, water level drop destroyed well over 99 % of Congeria kusceri population in Zira cave and caused their complete disappearance in other caves. Similar factors are likely to have also affected the sister species Congeria jalzici in the Lika region. In addition, the salinization of Neretva river, lack of proper wastewater management, intense agriculture, tourist exploitation, and additional hydrotechnical plans add to the ongoing decline of the quality of Congeria habitats.

    VELEBIT RIDGE TOP HIKE – 2 Days Hike One of the toughest but most rewarding hike in the area. DESCRIPTION DAY 1 - The tour starts in the early morning. After one hour drive (4x4 terrain veichles) we come up to the Libinje plateau, placed on the east border of the Paklenica National Park at 780 m.a.s.l. Our first stop-point is the Sveto brdo peak at 1750 m.a.s.l., - one of the favourite Velebit’s summits and its second highest peak. Amazing 360¨ panoramic view of Lika region, islands huddled in the Adriatic sea in front of Zadar city and its hinterland will be o great reward for your effort. We head on along the ridgecrest to the Vaganski vrh (1757 m.a.s.l.) in northwest. Amazing sights alternate between Lika and Zadar region. On bright sunny days your view may reach the Italian Apenini tops in distance. After some 2-3 hours walk almost entirely on the ridgetop we reach the highest peak – Vaganski vrh. We proceed downhill along steep trail named “Lipa staza” (“Nice trail”) to the very heart of the Paklenica National Park at 555 m.a.s.l. In the rural household Ramića dvori we get a merited refreshment and a dinner. Overnight. DAY 2 – less demanding, mainly downhill walk. After breakfast we start our hike toward Velika Paklenica gorge. We pass over Mala močila and nearby the highest limestone cliff in Paklenica - Anića kuk. While climate changes are considered to be a cause for all significant recent variations in meteorological and hydrological parameters, there is still a need for the analysis at the smaller regional scale, especially of the seawater level changes. A regional analysis is essential for early warning of upcoming changes that could, firstly, affect islands and coastal areas and, subsequently, expand on larger areas. The determined regional changes could affect the salinity of drinking water sources, increase the presence of natural flooding, and impact land degradation. In this paper, an analysis of local seawater level fluctuations is provided for three available locations in Croatia distributed along the Adriatic Sea’s coast. The rescaled adjusted partial sums (RAPS) method was used and applied on time series of the average daily seawater levels for each location. Visual interpretation of the RAPS method indicated the appearance of common regularities of the observed quantities, in this case, averaged daily seawater level changes.
