Please refer to the version provided by the teachers in class for confirmation.) BSTC6079 Early Buddhism: a doctrinal exposition (Foundation Course) Lecturer Prof. Y. Karunadasa Tel: 2241-5019 Email: [email protected] Schedule: 1st Semester; Monday 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. Class Venue: P4, Chong Yuet Ming Physics Building Course Description This course will be mainly based on the early Buddhist discourses (Pali Suttas) and is designed to provide an insight into the fundamental doctrines of what is generally known as Early Buddhism. It will begin with a description of the religious and philosophical milieu in which Buddhism arose in order to show how the polarization of intellectual thought into spiritualist and materialist ideologies gave rise to Buddhism. The following themes will be an integral part of this study: analysis of the empiric individuality into khandha, ayatana, and dhatu; the three marks of sentient existence; doctrine of non-self and the problem of Over-Self; doctrine of dependent origination and its centrality to other Buddhist doctrines; diagnosis of the human condition and definition of suffering as conditioned experience; theory and practice of moral life; psychology and its relevance to Buddhism as a religion; undetermined questions and why were they left undetermined; epistemological standpoint and the Buddhist psychology of ideologies; Buddhism and the God-idea and the nature of Buddhism as a non-theistic religion; Nibbana as the Buddhist ideal of final emancipation. The course will be concluded with an inquiry into how Buddhism’s “middle position”, both in theory and praxis, determined the nature of Buddhism as a religion. Assessment 4 Essays (50%) Written Examination (50%) Course Outline 1 MBS Course Outline 11-12 (Updated on September 9, 11) Lecture 1: Emergence of Buddhism as a critical response to the mutual conflict between the spiritualist and the materialist world-views. Lecture 2: “Dependent Origination” as the early Buddhist doctrine of causation and how it serves as a foundation to all other Buddhist doctrines. Lecture 3: The Buddhist doctrine of “non-self” as a critical response to the physical and metaphysical versions of the self. Lecture 4: An introduction to Buddhist psychology: the stream of consciousness as against a static consciousness; psychological implications of the analysis of the individual into 5 aggregates (khandha, 12 sense-bases (ayatana), and 18 elements of cognition (dhatu). Lecture 5: The Buddhist diagnosis of the human condition: “suffering” as conditioned experience; rebirth without the notion of a reborn soul. Lecture 6: The theory of moral life: Its three basic principles: (a) recognition of moral life (kammavada), (b) recognition of the causal efficacy of moral acts (kiriyavada), and (c) recognition of the role of human effort in pursuing moral life (viriyavada). Lecture 7: The practice of moral life: “the noble eightfold path” as the essence of Buddhist ethics; its middle position as it keeps itself equally aloof from sensual indulgence and self-mortification. Lecture 8: The Buddhist view of views: the psychological diagnosis of the origin of theoretical views on the nature of the self and the world; the early Buddhist epistemological standpoint. Lecture 9: The ten undetermined questions: An inquiry into the pragmatic and psychological reasons for their being left undetermined. Lecture 11: Nibbana (Nirvana) as the final goal of Buddhism: Should it be understood in a psychological sense or in a metaphysical sense? Implications of the definition of Nibbana as the extinction of “the three fires of greed, hatred, and delusion”. Lecture 12: How Buddhism’s theoretic and practical middle position has determined the nature, scope, and orientation of Buddhism: Is Early Buddhism a religion, philosophy, both, or neither? It provides an introduction to Mahayana Buddhism in the widest sense. After a brief look at the development of Buddhism in India after the death of the Buddha, this course concentrates on the historical, philosophical and religious origins of Mahayana Buddhism in India. These include the Bodhisattva ideal; Buddhological developments; the philosophical systematizations of the Madhymaka and Yogacara schools; the reasons for the dominant position of Mahayana Buddhism in China and an investigation on the features of the newly emerged Mahayana modernism (i.e., Japanese Buddhism). It covers from the Buddhist perspective the psychology of perception, emotions and thoughts; basic skills and concepts in counselling; recent development and research in psychotherapy, and insights into caring for the dying and their carers. The course comprises lectures, tutorials, experiential exercises and Buddhist practices. Students should be prepared to participate in the practices and exercises in class so as to acquire an experiential as well as intellectual understanding of the subject. Class participation Most classes consist of a lecture, experiential exercises and a tutorial. In order to acquire an experiential as well as intellectual understanding of the subject, students are encouraged to participate as fully as possible in class activities. The emphasis of class participation is not on performance, but rather on the willingness to explore, learn and contribute at a level that is appropriate for the individual as well as the class. Assessment Attendance (10%) 5 MBS Course Outline 11-12 (Updated on September 9, 11) As experiential exercises form an important part of the course, students are expected to attend, at a minimum, 80% of the classes, i.e. 11 of the 13 classes. Book Review (30%) Each student is to submit through WebCT and Turnitin a book review consisting of 1,500 to 2,000 words on or before 11th March, 2012. Essay (60%) Each student is to submit through WebCT and Turnitin an essay consisting of 3,000 to 4,000 words, excluding footnotes, endnotes, bibliography and appendices, on or before 13th May, 2012. Phil in Tibetan Studies Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages University of Oslo Spring 2008 1 Summary This thesis focuses on pilgrimage (gnas skor) to Drakar Dreldzong, a Buddhist holy mountain (gnas ri) in a remote area of Amdo, Tibet, in the present day Qinghai Province in the western part of China. The mountain had long been a solitude hermitage and still is a popular pilgrimage site for Tibetan lamas and nearby laymen. Pilgrimage to holy mountains was, and still is, significant for the religious, cultural and literary life of Tibet, and even for today’s economic climate in Tibet. This thesis presents the traditional perceptions of the site reflected both in written texts, namely pilgrimage guides (gnas bshad), and in the contemporary practices of pilgrimage to Drakar Dreldzong. It specifically talks about an early pilgrimage guide (Guide A) written by a tantric practitioner in the early 17th century, and newly developed guides (Guides B, C and D), based on the 17th century one, edited and composed by contemporary Tibetan lay intellectuals and monks from Dreldzong Monastery. This monastery, which follows the Gelukba tradition, was established in 1923 at the foot of the mountain. The section about the early guide mainly introduces the historical framework of pilgrimage guides and provides an impression of the situation of the mountain in from the 17th to the 21st century. In particular, it translates the text and gives comments and analysis on the content.

It is found earliest in the Nyingma and Bon (pre-Buddhist) traditions. Bon, according to its own description, was founded in Tazig (sTag-gzig), an Iranian cultural area of Central Asia, by Shenrab Miwo (gShen-rab mi-bo) and was brought to Zhang-zhung (Western Tibet) in the eleventh century BCE. There is no way to validate this scientifically. Buddha lived in the sixth century BCE in India. The Introduction of Pre-Nyingma Buddhism and Zhang-zhung Rites to Central Tibet Zhang-zhung was conquered by Yarlung (Central Tibet) in 645 CE. The Yarlung Emperor Songtsen-gampo (Srong-btsan sgam-po) had wives not only from the Chinese and Nepali royal families (both of whom brought a few Buddhist texts and statues), but also from the royal family of Zhang-zhung. The court adopted Zhang-zhung (Bon) burial rituals and animal sacrifice, although Bon says that animal sacrifice was native to Tibet, not a Bon custom. The Emperor built thirteen Buddhist temples around Tibet and Bhutan, but did not found any monasteries. This pre-Nyingma phase of Buddhism in Central Tibet did not have dzogchen teachings. In fact, it is difficult to ascertain what level of Buddhist teachings and practice were introduced.

Reviewed by Michelle Sorensen (Center for Buddhist Studies, Columbia University Department of Religion) Published on H-Buddhism (September, 2006) An Offering of Chöd Machik Labdrön (Ma gcig Lab kyi sgron ma, ca. 1055-1153 C.E.) is revered by Tibetan Buddhists as an exemplary female philosopher-adept, a yogini, a dakini, and even as an embodiment of Prajñ?par?mit?, the Great Mother Perfection of Wisdom. Machik is primarily known for her role in developing and disseminating the "Chöd yul" teachings, one of the "Eight Chariots of the Practice Lineage" in Tibetan Buddhism.[1] Western interest in Chöd began with sensational representations of the practice as a macabre Tibetan Buddhist ritual in ethnographic travel narratives of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries.[2] Such myopic representations have been ameliorated through later translations of Machik's biography and various ritual manuals, particularly those describing the "banquet offerings."[3] Since Western translators have privileged the genres of biographical and ritual texts, the richness of indigenous materials on Chöd (both in terms of quantity and quality) has been obscured.[4] This problem has been redressed by Sarah Harding's translation of Machik's Complete Explanation [Phung po gzan skyur gyi rnam bshad gcod kyi don gsal byed], one of the most comprehensive written texts extant within the Chöd tradition.

Shohaku Okumura, Sarah Harding and Bhante Madawala Seelawimala Sarah Harding is a Tibetan translator and lama in the Kagyü school of Vajrayana Buddhism and editor of Creation and Completion: Essential Points of Tantric Meditation (Wisdom). Rev. Shohaku Okumura is director of the Soto Zen Buddhism International Center in San Francisco. Mark Unno is ordained in the Shin Buddhist tradition and is an assistant professor of East Asian religions at the University of Oregon. The Venerable Wadawala Seelawimala is a Theravadin monk from Sri Lanka and professor at the Institute for Buddhist Studies and the Graduate Theological Seminary in Berkeley. Buddhadharma: Perhaps we could begin our discussion of the role of prayer in Buddhism by considering the Pure Land tradition, which is renowned for supplicating or invoking what it calls “other power.” Mark Unno: One of the primary practices of the Pure Land tradition is intoning the name of Amida Buddha. In the Shin school, we say Namu Amida Butsu, which roughly translates as “I take refuge in Amida Buddha,” or “I entrust myself to Amida Buddha.” Saying this name is understood as an act of taking refuge, or entrusting. This concept of entrusting, known in Japanese as shinjin, is widely regarded as a key to the Shin religious experience.
