  • Nandini Sundar
Interning Insurgent Populations: the buried histories of Indian Democracy Nandini Sundar Darzo (Mizoram) was one of the richest villages I have ever seen in this part of the world. There were ample stores of paddy, fowl and pigs. The villagers appeared well-fed and well-clad and most of them had some money in cash. We arrived in the village about ten in the morning. My orders were to get the villagers to collect whatever moveable property they could, and to set their own village on fire at seven in the evening. I also had orders to burn all the paddy and other grain that could not be carried away by the villagers to the new centre so as to keep food out of reach of the insurgents…. I somehow couldn’t do it. I called the Village Council President and told him that in three hours his men could hide all the excess paddy and other food grains in the caves and return for it after a few days under army escort. They concealed everything most efficiently. Night fell, and I had to persuade the villagers to come out and set fire to their homes. Nobody came out. Then I had to order my soldiers to enter every house and force the people out. Every man, woman and child who could walk came out with as much of his or her belongings and food as they could. But they wouldn’t set fire to their homes. Ultimately, I lit a torch myself and set fire to one of the houses.

This NS trending mountain series is cut by a number of parallel to subparallel NNE-SSW, NE-SW, and NW-SE tectonic features like faults, deformed hill ranges etc. This research work was carried out in Champhai district of eastern Mizoram, near Indo- Myanmar border. In this study, a morphotectonic analysis has been performed to know the presence of active tectonics for the region. Morphotectonic parameters were calculated for 32 basins of 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th order basins. Tuipui River had been originated near Champhai town which is supposed to be a paleo-lake. The two major rivers Tuipui and Tayo have similar entrench meander patterns which might have been controlled by some structural features. Most of the other drainage shows rectangular, trellis, oval and circular pattern along with the unique river meanders. The eastern basins of the Tuipui river mostly shows WNW highly asymmetrical (|AF|=IV) tilted basins whereas the western basins shows SE moderately asymmetrical (|AF|=III) tilted basins.

  • NTFP Documentation in Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary in Mizoram
Pleione 11(2): 420 - 428. 2017. ISSN: 0973-9467 © East Himalayan Society for Spermatophyte Taxonomy doi:10.26679/Pleione.11.2.2017.420-428 Documentation of non-timber forest products in Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary of Mizoram (India) Grace Lalawmpuii Sailo and H. Lalramnghinglova1 Department of Environmental Science, Mizoram University, Tanhril, Aizawl 1Corresponding Author; e-mail: [email protected] [Received 24.10.2017; Revised 20.11.2017; Accepted 13.12.2017; Published 31.12.2017] Abstract Forests produce more than timber, wildlife and water. They are vast storehouses for non-timber forest products; the diversity of which complicates development of appropriate management policies and practices. These products have enormous social, economic and ecological values to the residents, communities and forests. Yet, they are neither adequately recognized as natural resources, nor managed as such. Present study was conducted during March 2013 – 2015 at Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary and highlights 18 timber species, 17 species of fuel-woods, 38 edible plants, 57 wild fruits and 10 commonly used medicinal plants. Key words: Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary, timber, fuelwood, fruits, fodder, edible plants. INTRODUCTION The contribution of Non-Timber Forest Products to improve livelihoods can best be assured through a process of gradual domestication of NTFP-plants in human-modified (agro) forest types. The way NTFPs contribute to peoples’ livelihoods can best be understood by taking livelihoods rather than NTFPs as the central focus of study. Various terms (e.g., non-traditional, secondary, minor, non - wood, and special or specialty) have been used to describe products that come from the forests that are not timber based.

  • Interning Insurgent Populations: the Buried Histories of Indian Democracy
SPECIAL ARTICLE Interning Insurgent Populations: The Buried Histories of Indian Democracy Nandini Sundar Based on the memories of elderly Naga and Mizo Darzo (Mizoram) was one of the richest villages I have ever seen in this part of the world. ...My orders were to get the villagers to collect villagers in north-east India who underwent grouping in whatever moveable property they could, and to set their own village the 1950s and 1960s, this article shows how the concept on fi re at seven in the evening. I also had orders to burn all the paddy and other grain that could not be carried away by the villagers to the of “success” and “failure” used by studies of grouping is new centre so as to keep food out of reach of the insurgents... flawed, betraying a bureaucratic calculus. Whatever the Night fell, and I had to persuade the villagers to come out and set fi re to their homes. Nobody came out. Then I had to order my soldiers to overt reasons given for grouping, what underlies it is the enter every house and force the people out. Every man, woman and assumption that all people in a given area, whether child who could walk came out with as much of his or her belongings and food as they could. But they wouldn’t set fi re to their homes. Ulti- civilian or combatant, are potentially hostile. Grouping mately, I lit a torch myself and set fi re to one of the houses. I knew is thus an act of war rather than effective I was carrying out orders, and would hate to do such a thing if I had my way.

  • New Sites for Mrs Hume's Pheasant Syrmaticus Humiae in North-East
Forktail 21 (2005) SHORT NOTES 183 New sites for Mrs Hume’s Pheasant Syrmaticus humiae in north-east India based on hunters’ specimens and local reports ANWARUDDIN CHOUDHURY Mrs Hume’s Pheasant Syrmaticus humiae is a poorly DISTRIBUTION known globally threatened (Vulnerable) species (BirdLife International 2004). It is thinly distributed in I observed the species at three previously known sites the hill tracts of north-eastern India, north and west (Shiroi, Murlen and Phawngpui), recorded 20 new Myanmar, south-west China and north Thailand (Ali sites based on live captured birds or preserved speci- and Ripley 1987, Fuller and Garson 2000, Han Lian- mens in villages, and identified an additional 24 new xian 1997).Very little current information on its status sites where villagers reported the species (Appendix, and distribution is available (Fuller and Garson 2000, Fig. 1). In Nagaland, BirdLife International (2001) BirdLife International 2001). Recent fieldwork in north-east India prior to this study had resulted in few records (Katju 1996, Kaul et al. 1996, Choudhury 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, Robson 1999). No previous survey had specifically targeted the species. I carried out surveys in Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram during 1996–2004 to assess the current distribution and status of the species, mainly from hunters’ specimens and local reports. METHODS I carried out surveys in: Nagaland in June 1996, January, February, April and October 2001, February 2002 and February 2004; Manipur in January 1996, January 2001, October 2001 and February 2002; and Mizoram in April 2000 and February 2001. These states are almost entirely mountainous. The climate is monsoonal with hot wet summers and cool dry winters (although winter rains are also not uncommon); annual rainfall is 1,000–6,000 mm.
