    AMBER VALLEY JEDEDIAH STRUTT Jedediah and his family Jedediah Strutt is the man who connected all the sites in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. His Matlock Bath hosiery business and early silk mill were in Derby, and Cromford Jedediah was the leading partner in the development of Cromford Mill. The Belper and Milford Mills were built by Jedediah and his eldest son and his eldest Cromford Canal daughter married into the Evans family at Darley DERWENT VALLEY Whatstandwell Abbey. VISITOR CENTRE Jedediah remained a plain-living man despite his accumulated wealth, adhering to his Unitarian beliefs. He had three sons and two daughters by his wife, Ambergate Jedediah Strutt Elizabeth who died in 1774. Jedediah took a great A6 interest in his children’s education and development. He married Anne Daniels in 1781 and built a plain mansion as their home, Milford House. “Here rest in peace J. Visitors can enjoy the rural splendour of the Derwent Valley and explore 16 distinct places of interest. Described by Professor J D Chambers (1898-1971), the doyen of East Midlands economic history, as the “cradle of the new factory system”: a source of power, in this case water power, was applied “cradle of the new along the Derwent Valley to a series of complex factory system” mechanised processes for the first time on a relatively large scale and new types of mill building PROFESSOR J D CHAMBERS were erected to house the new technology. As it was the first to develop large-scale industrial production in a hitherto rural landscape, the Derwent Valley also developed a need to provide housing and other facilities for workers and managers, resulting in the creation of the first modern industrial towns. The High Peak Trail is on a disused railway line which runs from High Peak junction near Cromford to Black Rocks – Middleton Top – Minninglow – Friden - Parsley Hay – to Hurdlow near Buxton and covers a distance of about 18 miles. Some of the views can be quite outstanding and there are many villages to visit close to the trail and the short Hopton and Newhaven Tunnels to go through. There are quite a few stretches where you are limited to a view as you are in railway cuttings. z Facilities – Along the trail are a few refreshments and toilets facilities – at some places there are picnic tables – and close by are various interesting villages with a Public House. Parking and mileage between places on the trail are the following :- High Peak Junction 1.5 mile to Black Rock – 1 mile to Middleton Top – 6.5 mile to Minninglow – 2.5 mile to Friden – 2.5 mile to Parsley Hay – 2 mile to Hurdlow – then 1.5 mile to the end of the trail. z Café – Toilets - High Peak Junction – Café / Refreshments – Toilets – Information Point – Cycle Hire – Public House. Elder Yard Chapel was founded in 1662 and built 1692/1694. It was the first non-conformist O chapel in the town. The history of the building is unique in that it is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the town, built when the surrounding areas were a mixture of small alleyways and cottages for working people. The congregation was founded by Reverend John Billingsley in 1662 having previously been employed as vicar of Chesterfield Parish Church from 1653. The Pearson pottery family worshipped there and in 1875 Theophilus Pearson became a trustee. As a result of this connection the Chapel has a large collection of Pearson Pottery including some unusual pieces – Many of which were on display.
