Nicolae Iorga La 12 octombrie a.c., academicianul Alexandru ZUB a rotunjit frumoasa şi venerabila vârstă de 80 de ani, prilej cu care colectivul Insti tutului de Istorie al Academiei de Ştiinţe a Moldovei adresează distinsului savant şi filozof al istoriei cu renume mondial alese cuvinte de preţuire şi de sinceră admiraţie faţă de o mare personalitate a zilelor noastre, opera căruia este văzută de cei avizaţi ca o încununare a unui vast proiect istoriografic şi cultural, însumând peste 30 de volume de autor, peste 30 de volume tematice coordonate şi îngrijite de omagiat, peste 2000 de studii, articole, eseuri, introduceri la diferite volume etc. Născut în localitatea Vârful Câmpului din judeţul Botoşani, Alexandru ZUB este continuatorul seriei marilor personalităţi pe care le-a dat spaţiul botoşănean, edificându-şi, de-a lungul unei cariere de excepţie, o biografie despre care, pe drept cuvânt, Alexandru-Florin Platon spune că e grăitoare „prin capacitatea ei de a se preta, încă de pe acum, unei hermeneutici edificatoare”, fiindcă „desfide împărţirea dintre viaţă şi profesie”. Absolvent al Şcolii Pedagogice din Şendriceni, judeţul Botoşani, Alexandru ZUB îmbrăţişează de timpuriu profesia în care avea să exceleze, devenind în 1957 licenţiat în istorie al Universităţii „Al. I. Cuza” din Iaşi şi în 1973 doctor în istorie al aceleiaşi prestigioase instituţii superioare de învăţământ. A deţinut o seamă de funcţii importante în domeniul în care a activat, inclusiv aceea de cercetător la Institutul de Istorie şi Filologie din Iaşi (1957-1958), de bibliograf la Biblioteca Centrală Universitară „Mihai Eminescu” din Iaşi (1964-1968), de cercetător la Institutul de Istorie şi Arheologie „A.D. Xenopol” din Iaşi, responsabil al colec- tivului de Istoria culturii (1968-1989), de director al Institutului de Istorie „A.D. Xenopol” (din 1990), precum şi aceea de profesor la Universitatea „Al. I. Cuza” din Iaşi. REVISTA DE ISTORIE A MOLDOVEI 6 IN HONOREM Cu referire la splendorile dar şi, în egală măsură, inconvenientele şi riscurile meseriei de istoric, academicianul Alexandru ZUB avea să menţioneze, cu justi- fi cat temei, în una din lucrările sale, că muza Clio nu-şi împarte întotdeauna şi nea părat darurile sale pe criteriul dreptăţii şi cel al echităţii, ci din raţiuni doar de ea ştiute. Din acest motiv, a cunoscut atât puterea de seducţie a istoriei, cât şi experienţa tragică a recluziunii. O secvenţă în acest sens, din viaţa distinsului omagiat este descrisă de Iacob Mârza în „Alexandru ZUB sau puterea de seducţie a istoriei”: „Ataşat, alături de alţi tineri intelectuali români şi patrioţi, istoriei nefalsificate şi valorilor perene ale poporului român şi pentru că a avut curajul să apere adevărul istoric, cu ocazia serbărilor consacrate lui Ştefan cel Mare la Putna, în aprilie 1957, pe când era student, într-o atmosferă de dezlănţuire a dictaturii comuniste, Alexandru ZUB va fi arestat şi deţinut timp de 6 ani şi 2 luni (6 martie 1958 – 16 aprilie 1964)”. Şi tot din cauza acestor convingeri faţă de scrierea istoriei, a devenit destul de târziu membru al Academiei Române. Şi totuşi, sfidând încercările destinului, academicianul Alexandru ZUB şi-a urmat cu tenacitate materializarea ambiţiosului proiect istoriografic şi cultural constând din: crearea instrumentelor de lucru în perspectiva restituţiilor istoriografice la care se gândea (A.D. Xenopol, Vasile Pârvan, Mihail Kogălniceanu, Mihai Eminescu...); editarea scrierilor istoricilor agreaţi; realizarea unor sinteze de istoria istoriografiei; scrierea unor cronici, eseuri, cu scopul de a completa celelalte componente ale operei; traducerea unor studii şi monografii în diferite limbi străine, cu scopul de a recupera, atât cât se putea în împrejurările de dinaintea anului 1989, tradiţia interbelică a deschiderii spre Europa şi a dialogului între specialişti; amplificarea, după 1989, a acestei deschideri, în acelaşi spirit al sincronismului cu noile tendinţe ale istoriei post- comuniste. Un loc de vază în opera academicianului Alexandru ZUB îl ocupă istoria Basarabiei şi a identităţii acesteia (Identitate/alteritate în spaţiul cultural românesc, 1996; Impasul reîntregirii, 1995, 2004, 2009; Basarabia. Dilemele identităţii, 2001), pornindu-se de la considerentul că, sub presiunea schimbărilor geopolitice, dar şi graţie dezvoltării istoriografiei în context multidisciplinar,

    Olena Semenyaka, The “First Lady” of Ukrainian Nationalism Adrien Nonjon Illiberalism Studies Program Working Papers, September 2020 For years, Ukrainian nationalist movements such as Svoboda or Pravyi Sektor were promoting an introverted, state-centered nationalism inherited from the early 1930s’ Ukrainian Nationalist Organization (Orhanizatsiia Ukrayins'kykh Natsionalistiv) and largely dominated by Western Ukrainian and Galician nationalist worldviews. The EuroMaidan revolution, Crimea’s annexation by Russia, and the war in Donbas changed the paradigm of Ukrainian nationalism, giving birth to the Azov movement. The Azov National Corps (Natsional’nyj korpus), led by Andriy Biletsky, was created on October 16, 2014, on the basis of the Azov regiment, now integrated into the Ukrainian National Guard. The Azov National Corps is now a nationalist party claiming around 10,000 members and deployed in Ukrainian society through various initiatives, such as patriotic training camps for children (Azovets) and militia groups (Natsional’ny druzhiny). Azov can be described as a neo- nationalism, in tune with current European far-right transformations: it refuses to be locked into old- fashioned myths obsessed with a colonial relationship to Russia, and it sees itself as outward-looking in that its intellectual framework goes beyond Ukraine’s territory, deliberately engaging pan- European strategies. Olena Semenyaka (b. 1987) is the female figurehead of the Azov movement: she has been the international secretary of the National Corps since 2018 (and de facto leader since the party’s very foundation in 2016) while leading the publishing house and metapolitical club Plomin (Flame). Gaining in visibility as the Azov regiment transformed into a multifaceted movement, Semenyaka has become a major nationalist theorist in Ukraine.

    National Myths in Interdependence: The Narratives of the Ancient Past among Macedonians and Albanians in the Republic of Macedonia after 1991 By Matvey Lomonosov Submitted to Central European University Nationalism Studies Program In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts CEU eTD Collection Advisor: Professor Maria Kovács Budapest, Hungary 2012 Abstract The scholarship on national mythology primarily focuses on the construction of historical narratives within separate “nations,” and oftentimes presents the particular national ist elites as single authors and undisputable controllers of mythological versions of the past. However, the authorship and authority of the dominant national ist elites in designing particular narratives of the communal history is limited. The national past, at least in non- totalitarian societies, is widely negotiated, and its interpretation is always heteroglot . The particular narratives that come out of the dominant elites’ “think-tanks” get into a polyphonic discursive milieu discussing the past. Thus they become addressed to alternative narratives, agree with them, deny them or reinterpret them. The existence of those “other” narratives as well as the others’ authorship constitutes a specific factor in shaping mythopoeic activities of dominant political and intellectual national elites. Then, achieving personal or “national” goals by nationalists usually means doing so at the expense or in relations to the others. If in this confrontation the rivals use historical myths, the evolution of the later will depend on mutual responses. Thus national historical myths are constructed in dialogue, contain voices of the others, and have “other” “authors” from within and from without the nation in addition to “own” dominant national ist elite.

    Contemporary Nationalism in Ukraine: Why we need a Broader Analytical Framework Taras Kuzio Center for Transatlantic Relations, School of Advanced International Relations, Johns Hopkins University, Washington DC ‘Russian and Ukrainian Nationalism: Entangled Histories.’ A Harriman Institute Workshop, Columbia University, 22 and 23 April 2013 This paper puts forward the proposal that nationalism in Ukraine should be investigated in a broader context than is traditionally undertaken by scholars who focus on one region (Western Ukraine) and one element (ethnic Ukrainian nationalism). This paper is divided into three sections. The first section surveys the phenomena of racism, xenophobia, and anti-Semitism in Ukraine. The second section analyses the failure of the émigré OUNb (Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists, Stepan Bandera wing) to establish its political force in Ukraine compared with the success of the Svoboda (Freedom) political party. The third section analyses Russian and Soviet nationalism in Ukraine. Skinheads and Nazi parties and movements are included in my analysis of Russian and Soviet Nationalism because they do not espouse ethnic Ukrainian nationalist ideologies but instead propagate eclectic combinations of Ukrainian state nationalism, anti- Americanism and pan-Slavism. Racism, Xenophobia, and Anti-Semitism in Ukraine Racism Racist crimes in Ukraine against foreigners, migrants, asylum seekers, refugees, and Roma are rarely prosecuted and when they are they usually fall under the rubric of ‘hooliganism’ which leads to minor criminal charges. Racist and anti- Semitic crimes in Ukraine go unreported because of very low levels of public trust in the police1 and courts and fear of police racism and brutality. Racial profiling and individual targeting of identity checks in public places of immigrants and asylum seekers are commonplace which reduces confidence in the police and leads to under- reporting of racist attacks.
