We spent a lot of our time refocusing ourselves on communications, engage- ment, community involvement and membership participation. I can tell you that I am personally very pleased with the level of engagement from the members of this association. What I am most proud of is how we were able to achieve all the goals that we set for ourselves as the administration team for the Kingsway District Association. I am grateful for the level of participation of the Board of Directors that we have and I am grateful for their guidance and continued support of initiatives brought forward by our- selves, members and the general public. Being a Board Member of the Kingsway District Association is a lot of work and comes with a very busy schedule. I also want to recognize the City of Edmonton sustainable develop- ment department specifically, who has been an integral part of assisting our association. We are lucky to have such strong advocacy in the city of Edmonton. I would also like to point out we have seen continued support from our City Councilor Bev Esslinger who we have been able to count on for so much support and assistance. We look forward to working with her over the next year. 2018, was filled with excitement, as many new projects in our area started to come on board like the Norwood Expansion Project, The Yellowhead Freeway conversion an- nouncement and the continued work on the Blatchford Development. Kingsway is poised to see significant change and investment again in 2019 and we are looking forward to being a part of it. We look forward to what will happen on the old petroleum club site and we are anticipating our first microbrewery in the area. Ellie Sasseville Executive Director Page 6 Blatchford Updates and Pro- gress 2014-2018 2014 - Since the official groundbreaking event in August 2014, a significant amount of site prep- aration work has taken place at Blatchford. In the first few months, 756,000 cubic metres of topsoil and clay had been removed from the site for grading work and the excavation of the first storm water management lake. Blatchford Progress The Blatchford Redevelopment is in full swing as construction and builder selection contin- ues. This year, installation of roads, walkways and curbs are currently taking shape in Blatch- ford West - Stage One. Once complete, Blatchford will have a mix of custom designed streets, sidewalks and boulevards to create a safe and comfortable experience for residents and visitors. Also included in the first stage of development is a linear park with community gardens, a playground, fruit orchard, plaza, event area, and much more! Blatchford’s Dis- trict Energy Sharing System (DESS) is also under construction, which will provide the ener- gy for heating, cooling and hot water for all buildings in the community. An integral compo- nent for the first stage of the DESS is a geo-exchange system. In the winter, the geo- exchange will draw heat from the ground for heating, and in the summer, it will use the ground to reject excess heat to provide cooling. The geo-exchange field is located underneath the first stormwater pond and construction is cur- rently in progress. Crews are working around the clock to drill 570 boreholes, each reaching up to 150 metres in depth. Blatchford’s first Energy Centre is also taking shape, which will house the equipment needed for the DESS to operate and provide the very first homes in Blatchford with environmentally friendly heat- ing, cooling and hot water. The chance for Edmontonians to call Blatchford home is getting closer every day! The Blatchford builder selection process reached its next milestone and is currently in the process of selling the first parcels of land in the community to home builders that share the vision for high-quality, architecturally-designed, energy- efficient buildings. Visit our website at Blatchford- Edmonton.ca for official builder announcements and to find out more about the first stage of devel- opment. We will continue to survey and make member needs our priority. Communication & Marketing P l a n s In 2014 we created a communications plan to look for new ways to engage our membership and to create a buzz and an understanding of the level of tourism traffic as well as medical and retail traffic we see in Kingsway. We have already completed several of the marketing initiatives in the plan. The plan was designed to take us through 2018, and now we begin to refocus on new plans for 2019 and the four years beyond that. During 2017, we started collecting statistical information from members to help set the priorities for communica- tions and marketing beyond 2018. A MESSAGE FROM THE TREFOIL GUILD LIAISON Welcome to this new issue of Gleanings! As a Trefoil Guild member in Alberta, Northwest Territories and Yukon, this is your newsletter for your Guild to share your Guiding activities with all our 37 Guilds and the ANY members in the 1st Canadian Internet Guild. Our Guilds are of all sizes from three to 30 members each. You'll read a bit of serious information but mainly, exciting Guild activities, some ideas of which you might carry forward to your Guild. As I read all your submissions, I also heard about the rocky roads some of us have travelled in the past few years.
