Her love has provided the emotional sustenance necessary to complete this undertaking. vi ABSTRACT Molecular Gas in Virgo Cluster Spiral Galaxies (May 1987) Jeffrey D. Kenney B.S. Bates College Ph.D. University of Massachusetts Directed by: Judith S. Young We have obtained C0(J=1-K)) observations with 45" resolution at over 200 positions along the major axes of 42 Virgo cluster spiral galaxies, using the FCRAO 14-meter telescope. Although there is a general corre- lation between the CO flux of a galaxy and its optical diameter, the S^o/'^opt'^ ratio is found to depend on both the morphological type and the HI content. Analyses indicate that for the Sa-Sb and highest lumi- nosity Sc Virgo galaxies, the molecular gas contents and distributions have not been strongly affected by the cluster environment. There is a population of Hl-rich, lower-luminosity (10.9<Bt°<12.0) Sc galaxies in the outer cluster with a mean Sco/^opt'^ ratio a factor of 5 less than the other Sc's. While it also may be that the conver- sion of HI into H2 is enhanced in low mass galaxies by an interaction with the tntracluster medium, these results strongly suggest that the These attainment of an H2-dominated ISM is a function of galaxy mass. vil outer cluster low mass Virgo Sc galaxies have large massive star for- mation rates and high central HI surface densities, indicating that atomic gas plays a direct role in star formation in these systems. Galaxies which are Hl-def icient by a factor of 10 are gas -deficient (HI+H2) by only a factor of 2-3, due to the survival of large quan- tities of molecular gas. The massive-star formation rates, as indi- cated by Ha, radio continuum and far-infrared emission, are also lower by factors of ~2-3 in galaxies which are Hl-deficient by a factor of 10. Gonparison of the radial distributions of HI and H2 indicate that the total gas deficiency is manifested largely by a lack of HI in the outer galaxy. The inner disk regions, although Hl-def icient, are not significantly gas-deficient since the ISM in the inner regions of most of the galaxies in this sample are H2-clominated. The large H2/HI ratios in the inner regions of Virgo spirals indicate that either the lifetime of the molecular phase or the lifetime of GMC complexes is ~2xlO^ years in H2~dominated environments. GO emission has been detected in the center of 2 small-bulge so-so/a Virgo galaxies which remain undetected in HI. Eskridge Ohio State University, Dept. of Astronomy, 140 W 18th Ave, Columbus, OH 43210 ABSTRACT We have performed a multiparametric analysis of luminosity data for a sample of 234 normal spiral and irregular galaxies observed in X-rays with the Einstein Observatory. This sample is representative of S and Irr galaxies, with a good coverage of morphological types and absolute magnitudes. In addition to X-ray and optical data, we have compiled H-band magnitudes, IRAS near- and far-infrared, and 6cm radio continuum observations for the sample from the literature. We have also performed a careful compilation of distance estimates. We have explored the effect of morphology by dividing the sample into early (S0/a-Sab), intermediate (Sb-Sbc), and late-type (Sc-Irr) subsamples. The data were analysed with bivariate and multivariate survival analysis techniques that make full use of all the information available in both detections and limits. We find that most pairs of luminosities are correlated when considered individually, and this is not due to a distance bias. Different luminosity-luminosity correlations follow different power-law relations. Contrary to previous reports, the LX LB correlation follows a power-law with exponent − larger than 1. Both the significances of some correlations and their power-law relations are morphology dependent.

Using integral-field spectroscopic data of an archival sample of 51 local AGNs, we estimate the fraction of non-stellar light by comparing the nuclear equivalent width of the stellar 2.3 µm CO absorption feature with the intrinsic value for each galaxy. We compare this fraction to that derived from a spectral decomposition of the integrated light in the central arcsecond and find them to be consistent with each other. Using our estimates of the near-IR AGN light, we find a strong correlation with presumably isotropic AGN tracers. We show that a significant offset exists between type 1 and type 2 sources in the sense that type 1 MIR X sources are 7 (10) times brighter in the near-IR at log LAGN = 42.5 (log LAGN = 42.5).

Abstract Recent studies of neutral atomic hydrogen (H i) in nearby galaxies find that all isolated star-forming disk-dominated galaxies, from low-mass dwarfs to massive spirals systems, are H i saturated, in that they carry roughly (within a factor 1.5) as much H i fraction as permitted before this gas becomes gravitationally unstable. By taking this H i saturation for granted, the atomic gas fraction fatm of galactic disks can be predicted as a function of a stability parameter q j/M,whereM and j are the baryonic mass and specific / angular momentum of the disk (Obreschkow et al., 2016). The (logarithmic) di↵erence ∆fq between this predictor and the observed atomic fraction can thus be seen as a physically motivated way of defining a ‘H i deficiency’. While isolated disk galaxies have ∆f 0, q ⇡ objects subject to environmental removal/suppression of H i are expected to have ∆fq > 0. Within this framework, we revisit the H i deficiencies of satellite galaxies in the Virgo cluster (from the VIVA sample), as well as in clusters of the EAGLE simulation.

We combine the radio continuum images from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey with the CO-line observations from the extragalactic CO survey of the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory to study the relationship between molecular gas and the star formation rate within the disks of 180 spiral galaxies at 4500 resolution. We find a tight correlation between these quantities. On average, the ratio between the radio continuum and the CO emission is constant, within a factor of 3, both inside the same galaxy and from galaxy to galaxy. The mean star formation efficiency deduced from the radio continuum corresponds to convert 3.5% of the available molecular gas into stars on a time scale of 108 yr and depends weakly on general galaxy properties, such as Hubble type or nuclear activity. A comparison is made with another similar analysis performed using the Hα luminosity as star formation indicator. The overall agreement we find between the two studies reinforces the use of the radio luminosity as star formation rate indicator not only on global but also on local scales.

The M86 core, the plume, and the tail extending toward the northwest were clearly detected, as well as the extended halo around them. From the position angle ∼ 45◦ to ∼ 275◦, the surface brightness distribution of the core and the extended halo was represented relatively well with a single β-model of β ∼ 0.5 up to 15′–20′. The X-ray spectra of the core was represented with a two-temperature model of kT ∼ 0.9 keV and ∼ 0.6 keV. The temperatures of the core and the halo have a positive gradient in the center, and reach the maximum of kT ∼ 1.0 keV at r ∼ 7′, indicating that the halo gas is located in a larger scale potential structure than that of the galaxy. The temperatures of the plume and the tail were 0.86 ± 0.01 keV and 1.00 ± 0.01 keV. We succeeded in determining the abundances of α-element separately, for the core, the plume, the tail, and the halo for the first time.

We first report new 2 cm (150 mas resolution using the VLA) and 6 cm (2 mas resolution using the VLBA) radio observations of the previously unobserved nuclei in our samples and then present results on the complete survey. We find that almost half of all LINERs and low-luminosity Seyferts have flat-spectrum radio cores when observed at 150 mas resolution. Higher (2 mas) resolution observations of a flux-limited subsample have provided a 100% (16 of 16) detection rate of pc-scale radio cores, with implied brightness temperatures ∼>108 K. The five LLAGNs with the highest core radio fluxes also have pc-scale “jets”.
