The Alchemical Body in Daoism
The Alchemical Body in Daoism FABRIZIO PREGADIO Abstract This paper surveys some of the main features of the view of the human body in Daoist internal alchemy (neidan 內丹). The first sections discuss three different terms that refer to the body; cosmological, political, theological, natural, and al- chemical metaphors used to describe it; and the use of the body as a support for the system of correspondences that tie the human being to the cosmos. On this background, the development of internal alchemy closely relates to the earlier Daoist meditation practices on the inner gods. The figure of the Red Child (the innermost deity of the human being), in particular, bears close analogies to the “embryo” that alchemists generate through their practices. The final sections are concerned with the two main alchemical charts of the human body and with the use of the Buddhist concept of “dharma-body,” which some masters describe as the true immortal body. It is virtually impossible to distinguish the Daoist understanding of the body from its understanding of the human being, and this point consti- tutes on its own a central aspect of the Daoist way of seeing. For a Daoist, knowledge of the anatomic forms and the physiological workings of the body, or any of its parts and organs, is virtually irrelevant. The physical body performs another function: it serves to support different sets of metaphors that express the relation of the whole person to the Dao, the ultimate principle to which the person owes its existence. These metaphors may be cosmological (the body as a microcosm), political (the body as an administrative system), theological (the body as the residence of inner gods), natural (the body as a “landscape”), and alchemical (the body as a laboratory for compounding the elixir), to name the most important ones. -

EMOTION IN PRE-QIN RUIST MORAL THEORY: AN EXPLANATION OF "DAO BEGINS IN QING" Tang Yijie Departmentof Philosophy,Peking University Translatedby BrianBruya and Hai-mingWen Departmentof Philosophy,University of Hawai'i There is a view that holds that Ruistsnever put much emphasis on qing '1l and that they even regardedit in a negative light. This is perhapsa misunderstanding,espe- cially in regardto pre-Qin Ruism. In the Guodian Xing zi ming chu 'tsfi, the passage "dao begins in qing" (dao shi yu qing ^4f_'1 ) plays an importantrole in our understandingof the pre-Qin notion of qing. This article will concentrate on discussingthe "theoryof qing" in pre-Qin Ruism,and also in Daoism. In addition, it will attempta philosophical interpretationof "dao begins in qing," and in the pro- cess offer philosophical interpretationsof a numberof importantnotions. On "Dao Begins in Qing" The Guodian Xing zi ming chu is a Ruisttext of the middle WarringStates period (priorto 300 B.C.),and it contains the following key lines: Dao shi yu qing, qing sheng yu xing. ft4'hS,' 'r1S. t Dao begins in qing, and qing arisesfrom xing. Xingzi ming chu. 14 zpth. Xing issues from ming. Ming zi tianjiang. A i [F. Ming descends from tian. Discovering the correlationsamong these passages is crucial to understandingthe pre-Qin notions of xing and qing. To begin with, we can explain them as follows: the human dao (the norms of personal and social conduct) exists from the starton account of sharedemotions (qinggant1,f) among people. The qing of emotions (xi, nu, ai, le - ,Sti,) emerges out of human xing, and human xing is conferredby tian (human xing are obtained from ming, which tian confers). -

Volume 22, Number 3, 859–879, 2015 Nonabelian Hodge theory in positive characteristic via exponential twisting Guitang Lan, Mao Sheng and Kang Zuo Let k be a perfect field of positive characteristic and X a smooth algebraic variety over k which is W2-liftable. We show that the exponent twisiting of the classical Cartier descent gives an equiva- lence of categories between the category of nilpotent Higgs sheaves of exponent ≤ p over X/k and the category of nilpotent flat sheaves of exponent ≤ p over X/k, by showing that it is equivalent up to sign to the inverse Cartier and Cartier transforms for these nilpo- tent objects constructed in the nonabelian Hodge theory in positive characteristic by Ogus-Vologodsky [10]. In view of the crucial role that Deligne-Illusie’s lemma has ever played in their algebraic proof of E1-degeneration of the Hodge to de Rham spectral sequence and Kodaira vanishing theorem in abelian Hodge theory, it may not be overly surprising that again this lemma plays a significant role via the concept of Higgs-de Rham flow [8] in establishing a p- adic Simpson correspondence in the nonabelian Hodge theory and Langer’s algebraic proof of Bogomolov inequality for semistable Higgs bundles and Miyaoka-Yau inequality [9]. 1. 6 Ancient Wisdom for the Modern Negotiator: What Chinese Characters Have to Offer Negotiation Pedagogy Andrew Wei-Min Lee* Editors’ Note: In a project that from its inception has been devoted to second generation updates, it is instructive nonetheless to realize how much we have to learn from the past. We believe Lee’s chapter on Chinese characters and their implications for negotiation is groundbreaking. With luck, it will prove to be a harbinger of a whole variety of new ways of looking at our field that will emerge from our next round of discussion. Introduction To the non-Chinese speaker, Chinese characters can look like a cha- otic mess of dots, lines and circles. It is said that Chinese is the most difficult language in the world to learn, and since there is no alpha- bet, the struggling student has no choice but to learn every single Chinese character by sheer force of memory – and there are tens of thousands! I suggest a different perspective. While Chinese is perhaps not the easiest language to learn, there is a very definite logic and sys- tem to the formation of Chinese characters. Some of these characters date back almost eight thousand years – and embedded in their make-up is an extraordinary amount of cultural history and wisdom. * Andrew Wei-Min Lee is founder and president of the Leading Negotiation Institute, whose mission is to promote negotiation pedagogy in China.
