Journal of Military and Strategic VOLUME 18, ISSUE 2 Studies “Lessons learned” in WWI: The German Army, Vimy Ridge and the Elastic Defence in Depth in 1917 Christian Stachelbeck The Battle of Arras in the spring of 1917 marked the beginning of the major allied offensives on the western front. The attack by the British 1st Army (Horne) and 3rd Army (Allenby) was intended to divert attention from the French main offensive under General Robert Nivelle at the Chemin des Dames (Nivelle Offensive). 1 The French commander-in-chief wanted to force the decisive breakthrough in the west. Between 9 and 12 April, the British had succeeded in penetrating the front across a width of 18 kilometres and advancing around six kilometres, while the Canadian corps (Byng), deployed for the first time in closed formation, seized the ridge near Vimy, which had been fiercely contested since late 1914.2 The success was paid for with the bloody loss of 1 On the German side, the battles at Arras between 2 April and 20 May 1917 were officially referred to as Schlacht bei Arras (Battle of Arras). The Battle for Air Supremacy in WWI by Mark Lindberg, Mtn View, CA - July 2021 A dozen years after the Wright Brothers first flight, Europe found itself mired in the First World War that began in August 1914. The advancement in weapons technology dwarfed the existing military strategy, operations, and tactics resulting in carnage on an industrial scale. The large artillery, machine guns, and barbed wire created very strong defensive positions that made ground attacks by both sides often suicidal. A solution to breaking the deadlock was aerial observation… Balloons had been used for this in the mid-19th century American Civil War, but with the improved photography of the early 20th century the accuracy of location enemy positions was significantly improved. Balloons were also launched in the early hours of the still air with an observer who often had to bail out with the early parachutes when attacked. The mobile platform of an airplane could fly over enemy positions and designate targets for more effective for future attacks. However, each adversary could minimize this foreign intelligence by thwarting incursion to its airspace with artillery and by their own aircraft. Initially these aerial duals were fought with pistols and rifles, but soon each side designed aircraft with more lethal weapons. The first of these “Pursuit” (later “Fighter”) aircraft was the German Fokker Eindecker (E.I-III) monoplane in late 1915. Designed by Dutchman Anthony Fokker, this aircraft initially used a Oberusel 80 HP rotary radial engine and quickly dominated the skies with a synchronized machine gun firing through the spinning propeller. -

Review of Junkers JU-87 Stuka Dive Bomber Created by Milviz Intro The JU-87 Sturzkampfflugzeug, alias “Stuka” is a Second World War German dive bomber built by Junkers. It features a twin seat tandem configuration where the back seat is a gunners position facing backwards. The D and G-series of JU-87 were both powered by a three-bladed Junkers Jumo 211J liquid-cooled inverted V12 engine powering 1420 PS (1,400hp) and was a notorious and feared aircraft of that era. One of the main characteristics of the Stuka was the inverted gull wings and the dive siren that spread fear in all troops under an attack. The Stuka was designed by Hermann Pohlman and had the first flight back in 1935. It quickly made it to the Luftwaffe’s Condor Legion where it became famous for its accuracy and effectiveness towards ground targets. However the Stuka was not very agile and was therefore very vulnerable in air-to-air combat situations. Several variants were built but this review will focus on the D5 and G2 versions. The D-version is the bomber version whereas the G-version was fitted with two 37mm (1.46in) cannons with armor-piercing tungsten carbide-cored ammunition.
