Have no worry.’ 1:28 14 If he astonished them first... 1:21 15 ‘By heaven,’ said Arthur... 0:53 16 ‘Grant me grace,’ said Gawain... 1:06 17 The king commanded the courtly knight to stand. 1:12 18 ‘By God,’ said the Green Knight... 1:24 19 The Green Knight stood... 1:30 20 For he held the head up high in both his hands... 1:29 21 And yet high-born Arthur was heavy at heart... 1:25 22 II. ~Pryce" Meats and Princes: The Feast as Proving Ground in the Alliterative Marte Arthure and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Mary Frances Zambreno The Alliterative Marte Arthure and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight are generally acknowledged as two of the gn:atest works of what is called the fourteenth-century Alliterative Revival. The feasts that open the two poems are similar in that both celebrate the new year at Arthur's court and both are interrupted by unexpected in truders-the Green Knight in Gawain and the Roman emissaries in the Alliterative Mo rte. The New Year's celebration emphasizes the importance of each occasion: the holiday begins the calendar year as the feast begins the poem. Gawain then runs from new year to new year, the cyclical passage of the seasons underlying both its tone and any possible interpretation. In contrast, the Allit erative Morie describes the events of several years, but, as Matthews has pointed out, each festival and season is mentioned only once in the poem, creating the overall reflection of a single year (102-03). A New Year's feast thus begins each poem and then contributes directly to organizing the ensuing action. Any two feasts so similar on the surface must be worth com paring in detail. The initial difficulty in making such a comparison is the fact that feasts are extremely common in romance, espe cially Arthurian romance: Chretien's Hiain, Erec and Enide, and Lancelot, Wolfram von &chenbach's Parzival, and the Mort Artu are only a few ofthe many Arthurian works with important feasts. -

Writing and Literary Study Spring 2010 the Chivalrous Sir Gawain If
Ahmed 1 Sarin Taslima Ahmed College Writing II: Writing and Literary Study Spring 2010 The Chivalrous Sir Gawain If a man does not open the door for a woman, she may think chivalry is dead or forget that it ever existed at all. Today's woman is not a damsel in distress, but rather stands on equal ground with her masculine counterpart. She has no need to acknowledge that there was ever a time when men lived and died for the sake of honor. However, around 1066 a.d. to 1485 a.d., that was exactly what European knights, and those around the world, did (Achlin). Of these brave soldiers, the most famous were the Knights of the Round Table, subjects of Camelot and King Arthur. Perhaps the most acclaimed knights are dubbed Sir Lancelot and Sir Gawain. Lancelot is still known as the greatest of all knights, the perfect knight, but based on Gawain's actions in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by the Pearl Poet and those of Lancelot in The Once and Future King by T.H. White, I've come to the conclusion that Gawain is a greater model of chivalry than Lancelot. Following the code of chivalry, Gawain is faithful to God, his King, and he is respectful to women. Lancelot is very talented, but he does not feel the need to follow the laws of knighthood, and ends up disregarding King Arthur, Queen Guinevere and even God because of it. "Two virtues above all else were held to mark the good knight and bring him honor. -
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: ROYAL SUBJECTS
ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: ROYAL SUBJECTS, IMPERIAL CITIZENS: THE MAKING OF BRITISH IMPERIAL CULTURE, 1860- 1901 Charles Vincent Reed, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Dissertation directed by: Professor Richard Price Department of History ABSTRACT: The dissertation explores the development of global identities in the nineteenth-century British Empire through one particular device of colonial rule – the royal tour. Colonial officials and administrators sought to encourage loyalty and obedience on part of Queen Victoria’s subjects around the world through imperial spectacle and personal interaction with the queen’s children and grandchildren. The royal tour, I argue, created cultural spaces that both settlers of European descent and colonial people of color used to claim the rights and responsibilities of imperial citizenship. The dissertation, then, examines how the royal tours were imagined and used by different historical actors in Britain, southern Africa, New Zealand, and South Asia. My work builds on a growing historical literature about “imperial networks” and the cultures of empire. In particular, it aims to understand the British world as a complex field of cultural encounters, exchanges, and borrowings rather than a collection of unitary paths between Great Britain and its colonies. 250000 Pat Day Mile Presented by LG&E and KU
$250,000 Pat Day Mile Presented by LG&E and KU (Grade III) 92nd Running – Saturday, May 7, 2016 (Kentucky Derby Day) 3-Year-Olds at One Mile on Dirt at Churchill Downs Stakes Record – 1:34.18, Competitive Edge (2015) Top Beyer Speed Figure – 112, Richter Scale (1997) Average Winning Beyer Speed Figure (since 1992) – 99.9 (2,398/24) Name Origin: Formerly known as the Derby Trial, the one-mile race for 3-year-olds was moved from Opening Night to Kentucky Derby Day and renamed the Pat Day Mile in 2015 to honor Churchill Downs’ all-time leading jockey Pat Day. Day, enshrined in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2005, won a record 2,482 races at Churchill Downs, including 156 stakes, from 1980-2005. None was more memorable than his triumph aboard W.C. Partee’s Lil E. Tee in the 1992 Kentucky Derby. He rode in a record 21 consecutive renewals of the Kentucky Derby, a streak that ended when hip surgery forced him to miss the 2005 “Run for the Roses.” Day’s Triple Crown résumé also included five wins in the Preakness Stakes – one short of Eddie Arcaro’s record – and three victories in the Belmont Stakes. His 8,803 career wins rank fourth all-time and his mounts that earned $297,914,839 rank second. During his career Day lead the nation in wins six times (1982-84, ’86, and ’90-91). His most prolific single day came on Sept. 13, 1989, when Day set a North American record by winning eight races from nine mounts at Arlington Park. -
