A crowd that is that involved gives you a good feeling and makes you feel welcome. Bravo Zulu to all that showed. We have some events coming up to make note of, a gun show at the Jamil Temple on the 21st and 22nd of July, that’s Saturday and Sunday. We will be raising money for the base float, volunteers are still needed, I will be there the morning of the 21st. We also have the Lake Murray Cruise coming up in September, food and music and fellowship, a great time to be sure. (always is) Just for information, ANYONE with a dishonorable discharge is NOT eligible for VA benefits, be it medical, compensation none of it. And no matter what someone’s buddy says it does not change over time, in fact a less than honorable will not change, although there is a belief that over time it changes into a honorable. Another issue if you pass away while a claim is being considered, your claim dies with you. It does not get answered and/or reviewed in any way. In light of recent events with health care VA medical is beginning to look better and better. A lot is being proposed regarding TriCare, Medicare, Medicaid and medical insurance in general. What is right for you may or may not be good for another. Investigate what is available to you, and look not only at the current cost, but, the cost down the road, the cost when you’re in the hospital with cancer or a heart condition and the doctor asks how you will take of the bill. Whom will be the one to make decisions regarding “pulling the plug” if you’re in a vegetative state, who will be calling the shots about your estate, who will take care of your children or grandchildren. In the event that you are declared to be incompetent, or have dementia, you cannot and will not be allowed to assign a power of attorney, too late. Almost on a weekly basis I witness veterans that have not planned nor thought of the “what if” questions. Telling a family, elderly wife, that the doctors will be making the determination, is not pleasant. Take a minute, figure out who you want calling the shots and put it in writing, fill out a medical power of attorney, write a will, tell someone of your wishes. Let someone know. See you at the meeting. See ya at the next meeting, Brian 5 So far the month of July has been a hot one and by the end of the Lexington County peach festival parade the temperature was getting up there. Despite the heat the crowd was there to watch the parade and to exchange “happy fourth” with us and to thank us for our service. The USS Palmetto (SS-803) has about made a final patrol and her replacement is due from the Windy Hill Shipyard. The heat has slowed shipyard activity but every effort is being made to stay on schedule. We had a fairly good turnout in Gilbert at the parade which by my count was nine of our members. Those of you that have not participated in a parade are missing an experience that is gratifying. We not only help make the public more aware of the role of the military but we get the sense of a strong support from a great number of folks which as far as I am concerned is needed in view of what our news media is spinning. As a matter of interest, there has been a fishing trip organized by some of the Lake Murray fishing guides for our army warriors that are coming back or are being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. (The way things are shaping up Syria and Iran may soon be in the mix.) There are 15 volunteer boats that will take out 43 soldiers on the 13th of this month. We as a base have found a supplier of hats for the troops and have gotten them free fishing licenses. As we have done in the past with supplying the troops with flea collars we will give our contributor a receipt for tax purposes and a certificate of appreciation. The Pure Fishing Co. is donating prizes and fishing-related goodies. Chick-Fillet is working on lunches. As always we welcome your base-related suggestions and criticisms.
