This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Abstract We analyzed the magnitude of land use land cover changes and identified drivers of those changes at Awash National Park, Ethiopia, using aerial photographs, satellite images and field observation. Scattered bushland—the most important habitat for the wild animals, declined drastically. Areas under grassland, farmland or open land increased over the study period. Policy and park border demarcation issues were identified as drivers of change before 1995 (before decentralization), whereas livestock grazing was indicated to be the leading driver of change after 1995. Major events and causes that largely explained these changes include immigration of the Ittu community, land tenure system, drought, poaching, use policy issues and regional economic and infrastructur- al development. Our study reveals that the sustainability of the park calls for an immediate action to reduce the ever increasing human and livestock pressure on park resources. -

Figure8. The limited rank hydrophilic sedge and grass patches within the central valley bottom wetland provide suitable roosting and foraging habitat for African Grass Owls. The high levels of human disturbances on the site including hunting with dogs; severely restricts the likelihood of any nests and limits potential roosting suitability. The annual burning of the site restricts the vegetative cover along the valley bottom wetland. Off-road bikes, quads and vehicle tracks transverse the entire site as well as helicopter training and landing on the site and open areas to the south of the site adjacent to the Waterval cemetery. African Grass Owls are found exclusively in rank grass, typically, although not only, at fair altitudes. Grass Owls are secretive and nomadic breeding in permanent and seasonal vleis, which it vacates while hunting or post-breeding, although it will breed in any area of long grass and it is not necessarily associated with wetlands. It marshlands it is usually outnumbered by the more common Marsh Owl (Asio capensis) 10:1 (Tarboton et al. 1987). Grass Owls nest on the ground within a system of tunnels constructed in mostly tall grass; peak-breeding activity (February- April) tends to coincide with maximum grass cover (Steyn 1982). Grass Owls specialise in large rodent prey, particularly Otomys vlei rats, although a wide range of rodent prey species, including Rhabdomys, Praomys, Mus, and Suncus, are taken (Earle 1978). Some local and nomadic movements in response to fluctuating food supplies, fire and the availability of suitable habitat can be expected (Steyn 1982). The ecological requirements of this species make it susceptible to many land-use changes impacting contemporary South Africa. -

The park was once known for its abundant density of Swayne’s Hartebeest. We used direct total count methods for the census. We administered semi-structured interviews and open-ended questionnaires with senior scouts who are a member of the local communities. Historical records were obtained to evaluate the population trends of the animals since 1974. The density of the animal decreased from 65 in 1974 to 1 individual per 100 km2 in 2014 with a decline of 98.5% in the past 40 years. The respondents agreed that the conservation status of the park was in its worst condition ever now with only 2 Swayne’s Hartebeest left, with a rapid decline from 4 individuals in 2012 and 12 individuals in 2009. Mainly hunting and habitat loss, but also unsuitable season of reproduction and shortage of forage as minor factors were identified as threats for the local extinction of the Swayne’s Hartebeests. -

The disappearing native mammals of northern Australia 1 SUMMARY Since European settlement, the deepest loss of Australian biodiversity has been the spate of extinctions of endemic mammals. Historically, these losses occurred mostly in inland and in temperate parts of the country, and largely between 1890 and 1950. A new wave of extinctions is now threatening Australian mammals, this time in northern Australia. Many mammal species are in sharp decline across the north, even in extensive natural areas managed primarily for conservation. The main evidence of this decline comes consistently from two contrasting sources: robust scientifi c monitoring programs and more broad-scale Indigenous knowledge. The main drivers of the mammal decline in northern Australia include inappropriate fi re regimes (too much fi re) and predation by feral cats. Cane Toads are also implicated, particularly to the recent catastrophic decline of the Northern Quoll. Furthermore, some impacts are due to vegetation changes associated with the pastoral industry. Disease could also be a factor, but to date there is little evidence for or against it. Based on current trends, many native mammals will become extinct in northern Australia in the next 10-20 years, and even the largest and most iconic national parks in northern Australia will lose native mammal species. This problem needs to be solved. The fi rst step towards a solution is to recognise the problem, and this publication seeks to alert the Australian community and decision makers to this urgent issue. -

In spite of the many logistic and administrative complications that ensued, most of our activities were implemented in full and with positive results. Thanks to the hard work of our Wolf Monitors we can report that wolves in Bale Mountains are on their way to recovery from recent rabies and distemper epizootics, with a 30% growth. Many pups were born, and we are confident this will translate to successful recruitment into the population. Our monitoring teams continue to expand, with more Wolf Monitors and Wolf Ambassadors recruited across the Ethiopian highlands. To ensure that threats to wolves are detected and reported efficiently, we are providing training to staff in the Arsi, South Wollo and Simien mountains. -

Ethiopia 28 Sep – 04 Oct 2019 Introduction How much can you see in Ethiopia in only 6 days? Well, the answer is: Pretty much! I had a week at my disposal and contacted the well known company http://www.ethiopianquadrants.com to arrange a mammalwatching tour. They were very fast in setting up a trip for me that would cover much of my targets and before I knew it I had a tour in Ethiopia booked… I had one of the very best birding and mammals-guide in Ethiopia, Abiye Dagne: [email protected] A more or less standard tour to well known places. You have seen trip reports from those places before but maybe there is some additional interesting information. I visited Debre Libanos, Awash, Allideghe, Sanetti Plateau, Gaysay grassland (Dinsho) and Harenna forest. With the most important targets of Ethiopian wolf, Grevy´s Zebra, Soemmerring´s Gazelle, Bale monkey, Giant forest hog, Bushpig and to take a better photo of a Serval cat… First some words about those places. Number one lesson in Ethiopia is that there are people everywhere! And I mean everywhere! Behind every bush, behind every stone. If you think you are alone, you are not, there is always anyone watching you. The national parks are infested with people and their livestock, Camels, Cows and Goats. In fact it´s a sad sight and not worthy. Having said that – Ethiopia is still home to some very good wildlife and interesting endemic species and I got 35 species in 6 days. What drives vulnerability among pastoral settings of Ethiopia is not well documented. Department of Preventive Medicine, School of Public Health, Addis Ababa Objectives: This study aims to identify drivers of vulnerability to HIV infection among the University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Borana pastoral community of Ethiopia. Methods: Data were collected during 2008–2009 as part of a PhD work and subsequently in 2014 and 2016, during a follow-up visit to Borana. Data on perceived threats of HIV, facilita- tors of vulnerability, coping mechanisms and perceived consequences were collected by trained research assistants using topic guides developed for this purpose. In-depth and key informant interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with selected married men and women, opinion leaders, and HIV focal persons of public sectors and Non Governmental Organizations in Teltele, Arero, Yabelo and Moyale were carried out. Sample transcripts were checked for consistency and Video abstract completeness before data collection was completed. Two qualitative researchers read transcripts and suggested themes and subthemes in reference to the objective of the study. Transcripts were imported to MAXQDA software. -
