OHOULD you anticipr.te the reaiiiiif,' of thrilling adventures, or hair- breadth escapes, it is not in these paf(cs you must seek them, indeed, the author ahnost doubts whether, if in the absence of such scenes of excitement as usually render a book of interest, he was justified in compiling the following, dealing as it does solely with stern and unromantic facts, in the narration of which the imagination has been curtailed from running riot. That the casual reader will feel on closing this volume that he has been more than slightly interested is beyond the most sanguine hopes of the author, whose main object is in some degree to remove from the paths of those sufficiently persevering to wade through his experiences, the mary pitfalls, disappointments, and inevitable failures which waylay the hunter who seeks for sport in fresh countries. At the same time, the author has endeavoured, by the addition of such little events and incidents as appeared to him likely to prove entertaining, to minimise to a certain degree the monotony of sameness so characteristic of the long winters in a trapper's life ; should he by so doing have added yet another failure to his already somewhat lengthy list, he craves the reader's pardon for several wasted hours, and as the only reparation in his power, he offers experiences such as have seldom, if ever, been procured except by professional trappers. \^v ^ J I —I INDEX PART I.     IN THE GUNROOM THOMAS BOSS PERCUSSION BALL AND SHOT GUN Donald Dallas When it arrived on the Holts premises, I was immediately struck by its condition. For a percussion gun built in 1854, this Thomas Boss gun was in excellent original condition. The stock was crisp, there were traces of colour hardening upon the locks and the whole gun looked like it had seen very little use. However when I picked it up I was struck by how heavy it was, far heavier than you would expect from a normal percussion gun. Then I spotted a patch box in the butt – unusual – then I spotted a rear sight on the top rib – unusual. I glanced at the bore – smooth bore – and for a few moments I was confused. What was it? The one factor that makes a Boss gun stand out from all their contemporaries is their consistent quality. From Thomas Boss’s early ventures in the 1820s right up to the present day without exception, Boss have built one class of gun only, the best. Their motto “builder of best guns only” is entirely apt. This gun, no. 1360, a 15 bore percussion gun is of the usual Boss quality coming out of the workshop at 73 St James’s Street in the year 1854. But what is it? I looked up the Boss records regarding the gun and they were quite confusing as they were rambling and included a lot of details about the original buyer trading in a pair of Mantons and so on. But amongst this were the details of this gun.

    ATF E-Publication 5320.8 Revised: April 2009 PREFACE This handbook is primarily for the use of persons in the business of importing, manufacturing, and dealing in firearms defined by the National Firearms Act (NFA) or persons intending to go into an NFA firearms business. It should also be helpful to collectors of NFA firearms and other persons having questions about the application of the NFA. This publication is not a law book. Rather, it is intended as a “user friendly” reference book enabling the user to quickly find answers to questions concerning the NFA. Nevertheless, it should also be useful to attorneys seeking basic information about the NFA and how the law has been interpreted by ATF. The book’s Table of Contents will be helpful to the user in locating needed information. Although the principal focus of the handbook is the NFA, the book necessarily covers provisions of the Gun Control Act of 1968 and the Arms Export Control Act impacting NFA firearms businesses and collectors. The book is the product of a joint effort between ATF and the National Firearms Act Trade and Collectors Association. Worldwide Equipment Guide Introduction This Worldwide Equipment Guide (WEG) serves as an interim guide for use in training, simulations, and modeling until the publication of FM 100-65, Capabilities-Based Opposing Force: Worldwide Equipment Guide. The WEG is designed for use with the FM 100-60 series of capabilities-based opposing force field manuals. It provides the basic characteristics of selected equipment and weapons systems readily available to the capabilities-based OPFOR, and generally listed in either FM 100-61, Armor- and Mechanized-Based Opposing Force: Organization Guide or FM 100-63, Infantry-Based Opposing Force: Organization Guide. Selected weapons systems and equipment are included in the categories of infantry weapons, infantry vehicles, reconnais- sance vehicles, tanks/assault vehicles, antitank, artillery, air defense, engineer and logistic systems, and rotary-wing aircraft. The pages in this WEG are designed for insertion into loose-leaf notebooks. Since this guide does not include all possible OPFOR systems identified in the OPFOR field manuals, equipment sheets covering additional systems not contained in this initial issue will be published periodically. Systems selected will be keyed directly to the baseline equipment contained in the 100-60 series and substitute systems found in the appropriate substitution matrix. The WEG is scheduled for eventual publication on the worldwide web for use by authorized government or- ganizations.
