  • Enid Blyton Books Part 2
Enid Blyton Books Part 2. Stories for younger children By Zita Thornton Enid Blyton’s writing career began with poetry, gradually moving into short stories, mainly published in magazines, whilst she continued the day job as a teacher of young children. It is, therefore, no surprise that her first stories were tales of fairies and fantasy that would be appre- ciated by her young charges. However, one of her first full length books, published in 1924, was an account of the zoo and its inhabitants, who became models for some of her later fictional creatures. In this way, Blyton constantly drew on earlier ideas and developed them in later stories. So ‘The Enchanted Wood’ which first appeared in ‘The Yellow Fairy Book’later became central to ‘A Faraway Tree Adventure’ and Toyland, home of Noddy, appeared first in ‘The Enid Blyton Book of Brownies’. Blyton was a prolific and varied writer publishing around 15 books a year as well as contributing to magazines, annuals and anthologies. She wrote books about mischievous animals, both those on the farm and those in the circus. Her output included nature books for ‘Children of Cherry Tree Farm’ this edition young children as well as fictional stories. It is said that it took her less than a week to finish published by Dean & Son 1972. This was the writing one book. Moreover, her stories also appeared under various pseudonyms in annuals. In first in a series of books set on farms. First the 1920s and 30s, Blyton wrote as Audrey Saint Lo as well as Christopher and Becky Kent, and published in 1940, the original edition is later, in 1943, published a novel ‘The Adventures Of Scamp’ using the name Mary Pollock.

Adventure Stories By Zita Thornton It was writing ‘The Adventurous Four’ in Whilst sorting out a spare room in my mother’s house recently, I came across a most enticing 1941 that gave Enid Blyton the idea for her box. It contained some of my childhood books. The most memorable were those written by Enid Famous Five series. Blyton. Ruthlessly, I decided that my groaning bookshelves could take no more and I decided to sell. However, when I found myself buying more than I was selling I realised that I had become a collector. From the early 1920s to the mid 1960s, Enid Blyton wrote over 700 books for children of all ages. Her vast output included fairy tales, animal stories, adventure books, school stories, poems and plays. These included familiar favourites such as the Famous Five and Noddy, which have never lost their appeal and are still published today. To cover all those genres in one article would do an injustice to this prolific author so I have decided to write the article in two parts. Part 1 looks at her adventure books aimed at the reader from around 7 or 8 years old.

  • Animated Dialogues, 2007 64
Animation Studies – Animated Dialogues, 2007 Cordelia Brown Flowerpot Men The Haptic Image in Brian Cosgrove and Richard Hall’s Animations I. The Haptic Image Haptic is a term used to describe the experience of touch. In most fields it refers to a generalised tactile sensibility. For example in Child Psychology, haptic is defined as ‘the perceptual experience that results from active exploration of objects by touch’ (Vasta et al. 1999, p.201). In recent art history and media theory, haptic is a term that has come to articulate the perception of touch through any experiential means. So one may have a haptic experience through vision, sound, taste etc., without any exclusive use of the touch sense itself. Haptic visuality (Marks 2002, p. xiii) or viewing, detaches this sense of touch in order to focus exclusively on that which is experienced via vision. In other words one can experience the sensation of touch through vision alone. This application of the term has its basis in art history (Gandelman 1991, p.5) but has more recently also been adapted to apply to the moving image and cinema theory. For example, an image of skin being cut, or an intimate portrayal of the texture of a stone wall facilitate an haptic viewing. The eye is able to relate in the brain the process of a tactile sensation without the viewer’s physical touch sense (i.e. the skin) playing any part in the process. Haptic viewing moments such as these occur frequently within cinema, as well as in other visual arts. French philosopher Gilles Deleuze was one of the earliest to address such a moment within film in his interpretation of a scene from Robert Bresson’s Pickpocket in which hands are depicted brushing against each other and passing around an object: The hand doubles its prehensile function (of object) by a connective function (of space); but from that moment, it is the whole eye which doubles its optical function by a specifically ‘grabbing’ [haptique] one, if we follow Reigl’s formula for indicating a touching which is specific to the gaze.

  • Understanding Enid Blyton and Her Appeal
31 Loved by children and derided by the high-minded: Understanding Enid Blyton and her appeal Jenny Byrne University of Southampton Abstract: The life and writings of Enid Blyton (1897-1968) will be examined through a psychoanalytical lens to illuminate the complexity of Blyton’s childlike and childish personality and her authorial drive. Blyton’s biographers describe her variously as being spiteful, selfish and given to tantrums. Most certainly her professed love of children was not echoed in the treatment of her daughters. But by entering into the world of the child she charmed her readers. This was not unusual for children’s authors; for example, Lewis Carroll, A. A. Milne and Beatrix Potter exhibited the same facility and had elements of the childlike in their personalities. However, unlike the critical approval received by Carroll, Milne and Potter, Blyton has been disparaged by the critics and her stories regarded at as banal, badly written and mediocre. She has been criticised for sexism, racism, xenophobia, class prejudice and snobbery. As an author it is the understanding Blyton has of the child’s desire for pared-down, simple tales of tension and resolution that allows her stories to be adored by children and makes their gladdened appreciation impervious to the high-minded disapproval and petulant foot stamping of the literary critics. Introduction Anyone growing up in the middle of the 20th-century in Britain will have heard of Enid Blyton. Blyton’s output was prodigious – she authored 600 - 700 books and has been translated into twenty-seven languages, with total average sales of ten million books a year.

  • A Seasonal Story……..With Apologies to Enid Blyton! Noddy Was Unhappy
A seasonal story……..With apologies to Enid Blyton! Noddy was unhappy. Yet again he had received a letter in the post telling him he would have to send off his licence and money as PC Plod, using his latest toy, the Dickybird speed camera, had caught him over the limit once more. He was certain he was driving safely, and had not seen PC Plod and his van hiding in the bushes until too late, as he was concentrating on the road ahead rather than his speedometer. Meanwhile, in his new headquarters, Brainstorm Towers, Chief Constable Brainstorm was pleased with himself. He was constantly in the news, and his friends at the Daily Lost, the main Toytown newspaper, never disagreed with anything he said. In fact, their most fearless and controversial reporter, David Barclays-Lloyds-Halifax, wrote each week how wonderful he was. It did not matter that David Barclays-Lloyds-Halifax lived a long way off in Narnia, and only got his information second hand, as the Daily Lost never let on to their readers, and in fact gave them the impression he actually lived in the area. At the Daily Lost things were also looking good. Every other day they were able to fill in at least a page about how well Chief Constable Brainstorm was doing, especially the wonderful statistics regarding safety on Toytown’s roads. It was incredible that after the Dickybird camera was introduced in October 2001, 2003, saw a reduction in deaths on Toytown’s roads from 44 in 2002 (the first full year of the Dickybird operation) to 49, and then in 2004, a further amazing reduction to 58! So good were the statistics that this year the Daily Lost was able to put up a banner headline stating ‘road deaths down in Toytown’ even though there was sometime to go to the end of the year.
