First New Noddy Character for 15 Years Submitted by: Four Communications Group - Duplicate Friday, 6 January 2006 First New Noddy Character for 15 Years - Whizz the Robot, the language expert, arrives in Toy Town - ‘Whizz’ to front new language programme ‘Say it with Noddy’ on Five London, January 6: Noddy is preparing to break new ground in his daily TV series on Five with the arrival of a new character ‘Whizz’ the Robot to introduce pre-school children to other languages and first up is Mandarin - just in time for the Chinese New Year! ‘Whizz’ the Robot is the first new character in nearly 15 years and will join Noddy as co-presenter of the new programme strand ‘Say it with Noddy’. Programme trailers announcing ‘Whizz’ will start on Monday 9 January, ready for his first appearance on Monday 16 January at 7.30am during Five’s pre-school block ‘Milkshake!’. Whizzing around on his brightly coloured red and yellow skates, Whizz will introduce Noddy to five different languages - Mandarin, French, Spanish, Swahili and Urdu. These five have been chosen to reflect languages from around the world that pre-school children in the UK might hear spoken today and to help make them aware of other languages. One hundred two-minute ‘Say it with Noddy’ episodes have been created and will be broadcast in fortnightly language cycles after the popular CGI animated series ‘Make Way for Noddy’. Each episode is based on a word that featured in the preceding Noddy programme. ‘Whizz’ introduces the word and its translation to Noddy and then encourages the audience at home to join in and say it with Noddy. The simple language words, devised in collaboration with language experts, include expressions, greetings, objects, instructions, animals and colours. Some of the translated words to feature include; apple, car, thank you, good morning, it’s raining. Noddy’s new friend ‘Whizz’ is the first new character to enter Toyland since Dinah Doll in 1992. ‘Whizz’, named for his speed on his racy skates and his ‘whizzy’ ability at languages, brings a contemporary experience to a brand originally introduced by Enid Blyton over 50 years ago in 1949 and now a hugely popular global property broadcast in over 115 countries. Welcoming the introduction of Whizz, Enid Blyton’s daughter Gillian Baverstock, commented: “My mother was a very fine teacher and believed in the stimulation and expansion of the young child’s mind. Many schools are introducing languages to young children and Enid Blyton would be delighted that, through story telling, Noddy is to become part of this important development together with his new friend, Whizz." ‘Say it with Noddy’ is a joint programming project between Noddy rights owners, Chorion plc and Five, who recently announced a long-term commitment to broadcast Noddy for the next seven years – until 2012. The breakfast-screened programme is must-see viewing among pre-schoolers, attracting a daily audience of Page 1 over 25% of Britain’s 3-5 year olds. Nick Wilson, Controller Children’s Programmes said: "Say it With Noddy is a fabulous complement to both Make Way for Noddy and Milkshake! Whizz and Noddy will introduce new languages to Milkshake's young audience and the Milkshake presenters will develop a cultural theme around the chosen language. Fun, stimulating, and a very healthy mental breakfast for young children - that's Noddy and Milkshake!" Nicholas James, Chief Executive & Executive Producer, Chorion commented; “Noddy has been teaching English as a foreign language for some time in such places as Korea, France and China through the ‘Learn English with Noddy’ programme. It’s a natural extension of the Noddy brand’s strongly educational positioning to now have him make an introduction to other languages for children in the UK, through ‘Say it with Noddy’. Whizz is the perfect partner to help Noddy with his new task and we expect Whizz to quickly become one of the firm favourites amongst our Toyland cast.” Whizz the Robot will make his TV debut in ‘Say it with Noddy’ on Monday 16 January on five at 7.30am.
