An open mind and the wisdom of great sympathy are conditions essential to making it at all possible. Contemplative, gentle, and metaphysical in their habit of thought, the Chinese have reflected profoundly and worked out many riddles of the universe in ways peculiarly their own. Realization of the value and need to us of a more definite knowledge of the mental processes of our Oriental brothers, increases wonder- fully as one begins to comprehend the richness, depth, and beauty of their thought, ripened as it is by the hidden processes of evolution throughout the ages. To obtain literal translations from the mental store- house of the Chinese has not been found easy of accom- plishment; but it is a more difficult, and a most elusive task to attempt to translate their fancies, to see life itself as it appears from the Chinese point of view, and to retell these impressions without losing quite all of their color and charm. -

Hartmann _________________________ Adviser Professor Ellen Fleischmann Department of History ABSTRACT This dissertation exposes important junctures between feminism, imperialism, and orientalism by investigating the encounter between Western and Middle Eastern feminists in the first-wave international women’s movement. I focus primarily on the International Alliance of Women for Suffrage and Equal Citizenship, and to a lesser extent, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. By examining the interaction and exchanges among Western and Middle Eastern women (at conferences and through international visits, newsletters and other correspondence), as well as their representations of “East” and “West,” this study reveals the conditions of and constraints on the potential for feminist solidarity across national, cultural, and religious boundaries. In addition to challenging the notion that feminism in the Middle East was “imposed” from outside, it also complicates conventional wisdom about the failure of the first-wave international women’s movement to accommodate difference. 1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour. -

Under Republican administrations during the 1970s and 1980s, working Americans encountered new financial challenges as the lion’s share of economic growth benefitted the wealthiest citizens. As socially and politically conscious popular music faded in popularity, Stevie Wonder continued to express his concerns about the obstacles to the promise of freedom and equality that many Americans continued to face. This paper examines four songs, written and performed by Wonder - “Living for the City,” “You Haven’t Done Nothing,” “Happy Birthday,” and “It’s Wrong,” - to track the trajectory of his commentary from local, community-based issues to national, political topics and, finally, to international causes. -

Music, Electronic Media and Culture About the volume: There has never been greater public exposure to the musical products of electronic technology than there is today. Pubs, clubs, restaurants, banks and shops offer new environments for the experience of musical sound, in addition to the conventional concert hall. There are now many different ways to make music, and, thanks to the loudspeaker, many different ways of listening. This new world of musical sound and the questions it poses are explored in the nine essays that comprise this volume. At the heart of the collection is the myriad of confusing and exciting possibilities that are raised by sound that we hear but whose source we cannot see – the acousmatic. Part One of the book challenges the received wisdom of generations of writing on the acousmatic, providing new perspectives including an ecological view of human perception. The essays in Part Two explore the ways in which the history and plurality of culture has itself become the object of musical creativity in the form of sampling or plundering. In Part Three the potential fields of sound perception offered by the imagination are probed and given a ‘textual’ voice in Katharine Norman’s concluding essay to the volume. This uses the text itself as a medium for expressing the multi-layered reflections that a listener may have to ‘the work’ of music. About the editor: Simon Emmerson is Reader in Music at City University, London. The song first caught the attention of independent label Rubyworks, where producer Rob Kirwan overstepped the original demo with live instruments. The track features only two musicians: Andrew Hozier and drummer Fiacre Kinder. The clip contributed to the song's widespread popularity. Directed by Brendan Curty and Conal Thomson of the small production company Feel Good Lost, follows the relationship between the two men and the subsequent violent homophobic reaction. After its release on YouTube in September 2013, the video quickly went viral, leading to a subsequent Hozier license with Columbia Records US and Island Records UK. This paper will address issues of evaluating and assessing electronically-composed and - performed music, especially as it relates to defining composition, discussing "skill," and contemplating musical literacy. 2 Introduction + As one who teaches both music history and music technology I have been caused a reasonable level of consternation by the divide which has gradually formed between historic formal/concert music and popular music. As one who teaches on everything from the Grecian modes to drum ‘n’ bass music I stand in the midst of that divide and give credence to both sides. As one who teaches music technology I remind my students that audio recording is not just rock ‘n’ roll – it encompasses all genres of music. These thoughts became increasingly present to me as I began to focus more of my compositional efforts towards technology, specifically the use of computer-generated audio, both in composition and performance. -
