    Foto: rio2016.com Maratona Aquática Esporte recente, prática antiga Nadar grandes distâncias em mar aberto sempre foi um desafio muito presente no imaginário de atletas ou aventureiros. Considerado o pioneiro neste tipo de prática, o capitão inglês Matthew Webb, no ano de 1875, realizou a travessia do Canal da Mancha, entre a França e a Inglaterra, percorrendo algo próximo de 64km. Seu feito ainda é muito valorizado, considerando que não existiam aparatos de segurança e monitoramento como hoje em dia, fazendo a atividade se tornar muito mais insegura e imprevisível, e também pelo fato do nível de resistência apresentado por Webb, que, se utilizando do estilo de nado peito, levou aproximadamente vinte e duas horas para finalizar o trajeto. Para que se tenha ideia da evolução das técnicas de nado e do treinamento físico do homem, em 2007, aproximadamente 130 anos após o feito de Webb, o atleta búlgaro Petar Stoychef, completou a travessia em menos de sete horas. Vale lembrar que as condições tecnológicas atuais permitem uma precisa localização e facilitam um deslocamento em linha reta, que evita percursos maiores do que o necessário. Logicamente, o nado é usado há milhares de anos como atividade utilitarista ou de sobrevivência no mar. Porém, esse modelo possui grande afastamento das provas esportivas realizadas atualmente, já que o conceito de esporte está estreitamente vinculado à obrigação de que a atividade física seja competitiva, institucionalizada e findada na própria competição, sem outros interesses. Desse modo, nem mesmo a travessia do capitão possuía características ainda de esporte. Atividades dessa natureza continuaram a ocorrer, principalmente como desafio.
