Bodenchuk, USDA APHIS, Wildlife Services, San Antonio, TX ABSTRACT: The establishment of the game ranching industry in South Africa has resulted in the conversion of 20 million hectares of marginal agricultural land to an economically viable and conservation oriented industry. The single biggest driving factor in the growth of the game ranching industry in South Africa was the promulgation of the Game Theft Act 105 of 1991 which conferred private ownership of game. Due to the Act, wildlife became economically viable and were managed according to the creation of this new market. The growth in game animals has reached its highest point since 1850 with over 20 million animals. In 1992, South Africa signed the International Convention on Biodiversity whereby the country committed itself to a goal of 12% of the country would be preserved for wildlife biodiversity by 2021. By 2016, the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) had determined that South Africa’s terrestrial protected area fell far short of the 12% agreed upon by the country. The DEA had determined that South Africa would have to depend on the assistance and conservation of the game ranching industry in order to meet the 12% target. In 2017 it was realized that a wildlife school for game farmers was needed, to address utilizing natural resources in a manner that supports sustainability and improves economic prospects while upholding conservation ethics. -

Racism, Hate Speech and Double Standards
Solidarity Research Institute Part of the Solidarity Movement Racism, hate speech and double standards: Not a simple black and white matter Dr Eugene Brink & Connie Mulder www.solidarity.co.za* 0861 25 24 23 Introduction Racism is a worldwide phenomenon and challenge and certainly not unique to South Africa. No country on earth is untouched by this ugly scourge and it has often led to bloodletting, wars and pogroms around the world. In multi-ethnic societies mutual respect, fairness and tolerance are of paramount importance for sociopolitical stability and sound race relations. Extremism and forced assimilation, on the other hand, provide the sparks that could ignite a racial powder keg and turn simmering tensions into a full-blown conflagration. Nobody wins in such situations, except maybe the extremists and their malignant agenda. South Africa does have a fairly unique and well-documented political history. After the demise of apartheid, a new constitution was adopted and new, democratic institutions were created to usher in, and of course buttress, the democratic era. Considering our history, race relations have been relatively good over the past 23 years. People of all cultures and ethnicities work, eat, worship and shop in common spaces. A recent study by the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) among all racial groups showed that a mere 3% of South Africans regard racism as a serious unresolved problem, and that in fact it pales in comparison with issues such as joblessness and crime. They also found in a 2015 study that a solid 55% of all respondents thought race relations had improved since 1994. -

INTERNET ARTICLE Masilonyana water woes addressed 22 June 2017 The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) together with Masilonyana Local Municipality on Tuesday, 20 June 2017, unveiled the the Brandfort/ Majwemasweu Bulk Water Project to the media as part of the post budget vote activities aimed at providing progress on the water provision in south Africa. The project came as a result of Masilonyana LM experiencing challenges in supplying sufficient quantities of water to its inhabitants and as a result residents protesting for water. The over R1 million project entailed the construction of raw water pipeline, six pump stations with one pump per station and a standby pump as well as the refurbishment of the entire existing pump station for Theunissen, Brandfort and Winburg in the hope of addressing the water woes of residents. As part of the media tour, media houses were briefed on the project as well as the processes and challenges that were encountered in ensuring the project is completed. The residents of Brandfort and Theunissen will enjoy the fruits of raw water pipeline, clean and quality water after a long wait. Ms Marietta Visser a resident of Brandfort, when asked about the project said it was a long wait however, the community is relieved that at the end, their water woes are over, as a result of the Department of Water and Sanitation and Masilonyana Local Municipality for working together in assisting the community. Mr Ntjwabule the Municipality Spokesperson with a sense of relief said, that he is happy and will be enjoying his sleep from now on. -
