My stomach got real tight and my heart started beating like crazy. I wanted to throw the radio down and burn all the … songs I’d been singing and get out there … with the rest of the brothers. I knew they were going about it wrong, I knew they weren’t thinking, but I understood anger that builds up over years … over centuries … and I felt myself exploding. Why didn’t our music have anything to do with this? Wasn’t music supposed to express feelings? I wondered to myself, “With the world exploding around me, how am I supposed to keep singing love songs?” Source: Ritz, David (1991). Divided Soul: The Life of Marvin Gaye. In one of the most sustained attacks on its integrity, Terry Penner writes: Plato’s true view [in the Republic] is . that there are only two parts of the soul, a rational part and an irrational part, and he allows himself thumos (spirit) for irrelevant political or moral reasons only . Plato had no logical or psychological arguments for going beyond two parts of the soul.1 Many scholars share Penner’s suspicions. Spirit is at best poorly unified and ill-defined, and at worst an ad hoc addition to Plato’s underlying view of the soul as the battleground between reason and non-rational desire, an afterthought which he introduces in book 4 to preserve his dubious analogy between city and soul, and then soon forgets, reverting in book 10 to his original view.2 Some have defended spirit by arguing that in describing it Plato ã Jessica Moss 2005 For all their help and good advice I thank John Cooper, Helen Cullyer, Cian Dorr, Alexander Nehamas, David Sedley, and Allan Silverman. 1 T.Penner, ‘Thought and Desire in Plato’, in G. • The Evangelical Roots of Rock N' Roll
religions Article Hell Hounds, Hillbillies, and Hedonists: The Evangelical Roots of Rock n’ Roll Clay Motley Department of Language and Literature, Florida Gulf Coast University, 10501 FGCU Blvd, South Fort Myers, FL 33965-6565, USA; [email protected]; Tel.: +1-239-590-7440 Academic Editor: Lawrence W. Snyder Received: 7 January 2016; Accepted: 1 March 2016; Published: 7 March 2016 Abstract: This essay contends that much of the creativity driving the formation of popular folk music, such as blues, country, and early Rock n’ Roll, in the American South during the early twentieth century grew from the religious tension between concepts of “sacred” and “secular” rooted in evangelical Protestantism. This essay examines the rebellious impulse of Rock n’ Roll as, in the absence of religious boundaries, tensions, and influences, it grew beyond its Southern roots. Keywords: blues music; country music; Rock n’ Roll; South; Protestant; Christianity; secular 1. Introduction/Background Rebellion is one of the defining features of Rock n’ Roll. This can take the form of rebellion against the conventions of the previous generation, established morals or aesthetics, gender and sexual norms, the dominant economic or political order, or some combination thereof. In 1953, just as Rock n’ Roll was about to break onto the national scene, the film The Wild One captured the genre’s youthful, alluring, and sometimes menacing rebelliousness when Marlon Brando’s character, Johnny, is asked what he is rebelling against, and he intensely replies, “What do you got?” [1]. Rock n’ Roll’s rebellious dynamic can sometimes be nothing more than flaunting of parental authority or taste, with sounds, slang, and clothes sure to annoy and confuse the older generation.

  • Motown Six-Week Course Description Outline and Syllabus
Motown: The Sound of Young America Instructor: Pete Elman This course covers the golden age of Motown 1960-72. It will concentrate on the people who started, nurtured, and established the label as the driving force behind American popular music in that period. The course will do this through several media: lectures, photographs, recorded music, film clips, question and answer sessions, and the use of live music. The instructor will play piano, guitar and sing, and will choose appropriate examples from each genre. Course/class outline: The course will be six sessions. The instructor will break the course up into six distinct classes, each one representing a topic, an individual or a group of artists who were associated with the Motown label. Each session will include the following: • A thorough, fast-moving background lecture about each topic covered, including; the key artist(s) involved, their personal and musical bios, the key aspects of their contributions, • An accompanying slide show, including photographs, charts and maps, presented in a simple power point format, with accompanying commentary by the instructor. • High quality audio CDs and documentary film and you tube clips of those artists performing at the peak of their powers, personal stories—sometimes primary source material--from the instructor. • A live music component, where the instructor will demonstrate on piano, guitar, bass and voice the musical style that was the trademark of that music. • A question/answer period where the students get to ask questions, critique, comment on, reminisce about personal events and weigh in on what was presented during that class.

Dear Blues Friends, There's been considerable growth in the public's interest in “alternative” genres/styles of music (blues, folk, bluegrass, old-timey, ethnic/world, etc.). I’m not going to try to analyze the phenomena, but I rejoice in it. When the consumer demands variety, the wise shopkeeper responds. Besides playing and listening to the music, I enjoy reading biographies, autobiographies, various blues related historical material, and watching blues on video. I would like to see a bigger 'catalog,' variety, and selection of blues related books, literature, periodicals, and videos in the bookstores. I'm frequently asked, “What books can I read to learn more about the music and the people of the Blues?” That’s a tough question, as there are many hundreds of titles. I don't have time to read everything that's available. I enjoy reading, but I’m no book reviewer. The purpose of this blues related book and video list is to give folks a 'taste' of the broad variety of blues related books, literature, and video that are available. The list is not "complete," and it's always growing. Even though the list is quite long, please take your time looking it over. I'm pretty sure you'll see a number of titles and subjects that will pique your interest. In some cases, the list includes the author(s) name(s), publishing company name(s) and city. Though many of the books/videos are only listed by the title and author(s), with that basic information, all you have to do is walk into, or call, your local book store and ask if you can place an order.

The sixteen essays, by authors who represent vari- ous academic disciplines, bring a spectrum of interpretive approaches to bear in order to aid the understanding of a wide- ranging audience, from first-time readers of the Republic who require guidance to more experienced readers who wish to explore contemporary currents in the work’s interpreta- tion. The three initial chapters address aspects of the work as a whole. They are followed by essays that match closely the sequence in which topics are presented in the ten books of the Republic.AstheRepublic returns frequently to the same topics by different routes, so do the authors of this volume, who provide the readers with divergent yet complementary perspectives by which to appreciate the Republic’s principal concerns. Particular emphasis has been given to the ideological development of the denomination from its origin in 1889 to present. It is hoped that this research will provided intellectual guidance for the convention and serve as a credible chapter in the historical and theological development of Korean Christianity especially Baptists and Pentecostals-Charismatics. Being the first attempt in compiling a comprehensive, scientific history of the denomination, this work based largely upon primary sources, many of them are unpublished.
