Will Baby Boomers Save the World? By Stephen F. Barnes, Ph.D. By now everyone knows there are a lot of Baby Boomers around the country, about 78 million of them, ranging in age from 45 to 63. It is highly probable if you are reading this article you are one yourself or there is one or more in your family, but most certainly you know at least one Boomer. You should also be aware they pretty much run the country—government, criminal justice system, schools and colleges, non‐profits, and companies of all shapes and sizes. That’s what adults in the 45‐63 year range usually do, run things, own things. • Bill Clinton was our first Boomer President, George W. Bush our second, Al Gore was almost a Boomer President. • Over 75 percent of the top companies in America (S&P 500) are run by Boomers, and 56 percent of those are in the 50‐59 year range. Not only that, Baby Boomers currently make up more than half of the entire labor force (65 million workers). • While most Boomers fall into the middle‐income range, typically they own their homes (76 percent), some have second homes as well. When they are considered as a group, however, the financial assets they control are breathtaking‐‐$42 trillion. Boomer’s hold 7.6 trillion in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and IRA’s. More than 80 percent of all funds in savings accounts are theirs. Their estimated annual spending power is $2.1 trillion. They own a lot of America and wield considerable financial leverage.

Call for papers Actors behind the camera FILM JOURNAL Call for papers for Film Journal Actors behind the camera Guest editors Nicole Cloarec (Université Rennes 1, France) and Delphine Letort (Université du Maine-Le Mans, France) “Actors are cattle” was Hitchcock’s provocative judgement in the famous series of talks that the filmmaker gave to François Truffaut (Jeffries). Truly enough, during the heyday of Classical Hollywood, actors were under contract, like any other cog in the wheel of production of the studio system. The prevailing star system put an end to the “multitasking” norm of the beginning of the movie industry and, in this context, the instances of actors who turned directors (Charles Laughton, Robert Montgomery, Ida Lupino) were all the more remarkable. However, the break-up of the studio system and the advent of independent cinema brought about a new order where a new generation of actors (Dennis Hopper, Paul Newman or Robert Redford among others) had more opportunities to try their luck behind the camera. Since the 1970s, the list of actors-turned-directors has increased dramatically and seems to have become a significant trend in recent years. The latest issue of emmy magazine explores how a recent, notorious prison break drew a trio of acclaimed performers to Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora. The award-winning official publication of the Television Academy hits newsstands Nov. 20. Based on the true story of a 2015 prison escape that made national news, Escape at Dannemora, premiering Nov. 18, examines human connection in the hostile and hopeless environment of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York. All eight episodes were directed and executive produced by Stiller, and they feature Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro, Golden Globe nominee Paul Dano and Emmy- and Oscar-winner Patricia Arquette in leading roles. While the genre had long been a source of fascination for Stiller, he wasn’t initially sure he was the right man for the job. “I was nervous about not getting it right, because it was so outside my experience.” Stiller combatted his inexperience with a meticulous attention to detail, shooting the show exterior right in Clinton’s North Yard and casting real-life prison workers, former prisoners and officials who took part in the manhunt as extras.
