file:///A:/My Documents/CLIENTS/GCN/WEBSITE/GCN/editorialmemorialday2017.htm 20/22 11/24/2020 Welcome To Grant County ND News Serving Southwestern And South Central North Dakota How many of today's Hollywood elite have put their careers on hold to enlist in the military and serve in Iraq or Afghanistan?

Pat Tillman, who turned down a contract oer of $3.6 million from the Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the US Army aer September 11, 2001. He served as a Ranger in Afghanistan, where he was killed in action in 2004. But rather than being lauded for his choice and his decision to put his country before his career, he was mocked and ridiculed by many of his peers.

I say this is not the America today that it was over seventy years ago. I for one, am saddened but mostly disgusted.

My generation grew up watching, being entertained by and laughing with so many of these fine people, never really knowing what they contributed to the war eort.

Like millions of Americans during WWII, there was a job that needed doing and they didn't question why or shy away from the duty as an American citizen. They went, they served and some gave the ultimate sacrifice. Those that came home returned to their now new normal life and carried on with very few ever saying what they did or saw, including myself, my wife, my father, my brother, my grandfather and my grandmother.

They recognized it as their "responsibility", and their "duty" to God and Country, to protect and preserve our freedoms and way of life, not just for themselves but for all future generations to come. As a member of a later generation, I am forever humbly in their debt.
