    Court in the Market: The ‘Business’ of a Princely Court in the Burgundian Netherlands, 1467-1503 Jun Hee Cho Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Jun Hee Cho All rights reserved ABSTRACT Court in the Market: The ‘Business’ of a Princely Court in the Burgundian Netherlands, 1467-1503 Jun Hee Cho This dissertation examines the relations between court and commerce in Europe at the onset of the modern era. Focusing on one of the most powerful princely courts of the period, the court of Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy, which ruled over one of the most advanced economic regions in Europe, the greater Low Countries, it argues that the Burgundian court was, both in its institutional operations and its cultural aspirations, a commercial enterprise. Based primarily on fiscal accounts, corroborated with court correspondence, municipal records, official chronicles, and contemporary literary sources, this dissertation argues that the court was fully engaged in the commercial economy and furthermore that the culture of the court, in enacting the ideals of a largely imaginary feudal past, was also presenting the ideals of a commercial future. It uncovers courtiers who, despite their low rank yet because of their market expertise, were close to the duke and in charge of acquiring and maintaining the material goods that made possible the pageants and ceremonies so central to the self- representation of the Burgundian court. It exposes the wider network of court officials, urban merchants and artisans who, tied by marriage and business relationships, together produced and managed the ducal liveries, jewelries, tapestries and finances that realized the splendor of the court.

It was their opinion that a short survey of methods and results in the study of the language of the Low Countries might have its uses for Germanists and other linguists abroad. For the contents of this book, however, I myself am entirely responsible. It was not my intention to compile a complete bibliography, the very completeness and impersonality of which would have rendered it unpalatable. I had to be selective, therefore, and was not bound to refrain from giving my own opinions. Inevitably, both the selection and the opinions expressed are somewhat personal, and I do not expect every one to agree with them. Fellow-Netherlandists will perhaps regret the absence of certain publications, and be surprised at the presence of others. Moreover, omissions may be due, not to my lack of appreciation, but to my simply having overlooked the existence of some article or other. Nevertheless, I hope I have attained a sufficient degree of objectivity to render the book suitable both for scholars abroad and for Belgian, Dutch and South African students, as a survey of investigations and investigators in the field of Netherlandic linguistics.

Statesmen and diplomats tackled the question. Their practical vision of the law is a necessary complement to legal doctrine. Louis XIV and Emperor Leopold I used incompatible and absolute claims, which started in private law and Spanish succession law. At the Peace of Utrecht, these arguments completely dissolved. The War of The Spanish Succession thus not only redesigned the political map of Europe. It altered the norm hierarchy in public law, strengthening international law as the framework of the “Société des Princes”. Introduction The War of the Spanish Succession (1701/1702-1713/1714) redesigned the political map of Europe. It sealed the definitive end of French encirclement by the Spanish Habsburgs. When Louis XIV died in September 1715, the heydays of the Spanish Monarchy were gone and a Bourbon King, his own grandson, reigned in Madrid. Both Spanish and French claims for universal monarchy had come to an endii. The Treaties of Utrecht and Rastadt/Baden created a balance of power on the continent between Versailles and Vienna, which was to last for 30 years. Finally, the war constituted the basis for British dominance as a commercial naval power, at the expense of the Dutch Republic.
