The Community concept relates to the persons who compose it and to the ties which bind them together (language, culture, etc.). GRAEME SMALL The Scottish Court in the Fifteenth Century A view from Burgundy Looking at the world of the Scottish court in the fifteenth century, the view from Burgundy was often far from positive. The exile of the Lancastrian royal family in Scotland in 1461, for example, was portrayed in the official ducal chronicle of George Chastelain as a miserable experience. Chastelain records an incident wherein Mar- garet of Anjou was forced to beg, from a tight-fisted Scots archer, for the loan of a groat to make her offering at Mass1. Scottish royal records show that the treatment the queen received was rather more generous, and we may suspect that Chastelain’s colourful account was influenced by literary topoi of long pedigree2. -

The passage of the valley of the Lasne by the Prussian units on the 18th of June 1815. According to Von Bülow himself it was the information of major Von Falckenhausen which led Blücher to decide to cross the valley of the Lasne and to occupy the Bois de Paris. 1 Others believe it was major Von Lützow’s information which led Blücher to do so. 2 From shortly before 10 a.m. onwards, Von Lützow had, accompanied by lieutenant Von Massow and a detachment of the 2nd regiment of Silesian hussars (3), observed the positions of Wellington and Napoleon from a covered position in the western edge of the Bois de Paris. 4 Von Lützow reported to Blücher that the Bois de Paris was not occupied and that the French right flank wasn’t secured at all. Before he did so, Von Lützow left lieutenant Von Massow with the hussars behind in the wood. Some patrols had crossed the valley of the Lasne. One of them reported: Der Weg nach La Haye durch Lasne führend geht ziemlich sanft herunter das diesseitige Ufer ist bei weitem steiler. Der Weg ist, so lang das Defilée, mit 20 Fuss hohen Wenden eingeschlossen. … Der Bach der Lasne ist nur unbedeutend 2 bis 3 Fuss tief. Geuren en kleuren in overvloed! Die schoonheid lokt een mens naar buiten. Een omkadering in vele tinten groen beperkt mijn gezichtsveld, zelfs het huis van onze achterbuur is slechts een dak. Solitair in het midden van het weiland staat een stoere eik in harmonische symbiose van kracht en waardigheid, koning te wezen. In de grasberm langs de gracht bloeit een weelde aan margrieten. Veldbloemen bekoren door hun eenvoud, ze ontplooien zich gaaf en puur zonder een hand die ze beschermt of leidt. Het malse gras van het hooiland is precies op tijd aan maaien toe; in de aangrenzende weiden grazen wit- zwart gevlekte koeien of liggen er urenlang te herkauwen. Een leger bruine konijntjes wipt en rent door de wei waarin de paarden staan, één paard kan dat niet verdragen en gaat furieus achter de langoortjes aan. Enkele dagen geleden is er een veulen geboren, we zagen nog net hoe het op zijn ranke benen leerde staan. Nu volgt het de merrie en vlijt zijn hoofd vertederend tegen moeders hals aan, een prachtig beeld van intimiteit en verbondenheid. In de tuin is het een explosie van rood en wit, lila en roze nu de rododendrons bloeien; prunus en blauwe regen lokken je met een fijn parfum dichterbij. -

Howard General introduction Ground acceleration caused by an induced earthquake is strongly dependent on the composition of local shallow soils. NAM commissioned Deltares to conduct a detailed survey of the shallow subsurface above the Groningen gas field. The survey focuses on Quaternary geology with an emphasis on the upper 50 metres. This report provides an introduction to Groningen’s Quaternary geology as a background to the comprehensive Deltares report, which has culminated in a detailed model of Groningen’s shallow subsurface. This report was written by Dr ir Erik Meijles, Assistant Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Groningen. Wim Dubelaar, Dr Jan Stafleu and Dr Wim Westerhoff of TNO Geological Survey of the Netherlands (TNO- NITG) in Utrecht assisted with editing this report and provided a number of key diagrams. Los manuscritos de Francisco Alonso Lozano, Brussels, Commission Royale d’Histoire, 2018, 271 pp. isbn 978-2-87044-016-2 Since the 1970s, numerous studies have been devoted to the history of the princely courts of Europe. Many of these have focused on the magnificent royal courts of France, England, and Spain, but in recent years the courts of smaller principalities, too, have been researched extensively. By comparison, the court of Brussels has received scant attention in historiography. Owing to its reputation as a subaltern court of the Spanish monarchy, the Brussels court was often considered to have been of secondary importance at best. Most scholars have therefore tended to concen- trate on the first decades of the seventeenth century, when the archdukes Albert and Isa- bella (1598-1633) inhabited the palace on the city’s Coudenberg hill and created a court that rivalled many others in size and opulence. While these studies have greatly contrib- uted to our knowledge of the Brussels court as a centre of international diplomacy and culture, its history during the second half of the seventeenth century has remained largely unexplored. From the 1660s onwards the Coudenberg palace became the residence of a rapid succession of governors, few of whom remained in the Low Countries long enough to take a vested interest in its upkeep. The resulting scholarly indifference towards this later period has also been affected by the problematic archival situation, as relevant sources are scattered across multiple European archives. -
