Sports, Culture, and Asia Baseball in Japan and the US History, Culture, and Future Prospects By Daniel A. Métraux A 1927 photo of Kenichi Zenimura, the father of Japanese-American baseball, standing between Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth. Source: Japanese BallPlayers.com at http://tinyurl.com/zzydv3v. he essay that follows, with a primary focus on professional baseball, is intended as an in- troductory comparative overview of a game long played in the US and Japan. I hope it will provide readers with some context to learn more about a complex, evolving, and, most of all, Tfascinating topic, especially for lovers of baseball on both sides of the Pacific. Baseball, although seriously challenged by the popularity of other sports, has traditionally been considered America’s pastime and was for a long time the nation’s most popular sport. The game is an original American sport, but has sunk deep roots into other regions, including Latin America and East Asia. Baseball was introduced to Japan in the late nineteenth century and became the national sport there during the early post-World War II period. The game as it is played and organized in both countries, however, is considerably different. The basic rules are mostly the same, but cultural differences between Americans and Japanese are clearly reflected in how both nations approach their versions of baseball. Although players from both countries have flourished in both American and Japanese leagues, at times the cultural differences are substantial, and some attempts to bridge the gaps have ended in failure. Still, while doubtful the Japanese version has changed the American game, there is some evidence that the American version has exerted some changes in the Japanese game.

n o s a e P.O.V. 19S Discussion Guide Kokoyakyu: High School Baseball A Film by Kenneth Eng www.pbs.org/pov P.O.V. n o s Discussion Guide | Kokoyakyu: High School Baseball a e 19S Letter from the Filmmaker NEW YORK, SPRING 2006 Dear Colleague, It started back in January of 2001 while we were working in India on the Projectile Arts documentary Take Me to the River, about a phenomenal Hindu gathering. We wanted to make another film with Projectile Arts that would bring an inspiring cultural experience to America. Surrounded by 20 million Hindu pilgrims at the world’s largest religious festival, the “Kumbh Mela,” our thoughts naturally turned to baseball (we both grew up in Boston as hopeless Red Sox fans). Ichiro Suzuki was about to become the first Japanese position player in Major League history. We were fascinated — the whole idea of Japanese baseball was so mysterious to many Americans, and we knew it could be a great window into Japanese culture. Director Kenneth Eng Of course, Ichiro’s first season in the Majors Photo courtesy of Kenneth Eng turned out to be one for the record books — on top of the personal achievements (the batting title, the Gold Glove, the Rookie of the Year award, and Most Valuable Player), Ichiro led his team to an American League record 116 wins. We discovered Robert Whiting’s book You Gotta Have Wa and learned for the first time about Japan’s National High School Baseball Tournament, known as the Koshien Tournament for its famous stadium.

I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

TEXAS RANGERS CLIPS – August 2, 2013 TEXASRANGERS.COM Darvish dazzles D-backs with 14 K's in win Ties single-game high in 16th career double-digit-punchout effort By Master Tesfatsion 8/1/2013 11:19 PM ET ARLINGTON -- The Rangers didn't get a chance for their fourth consecutive walk-off win. Blame Yu Darvish, who wouldn't stop striking out the D-backs on Thursday. He was electric in his 21st start of 2013, matching a career high with 14 strikeouts in a 7-1 Texas win at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. It's the fourth time Darvish has had a 14-strikeout game this season, passing Nolan Ryan for the most times accomplishing the feat in a season in club history. Darvish recorded double-digit punchouts for the 16th time in his career, and fell two short of tying the franchise record for most strikeouts in a game, twice done by Ryan. Darvish is the first pitcher with four 14-K games in a season since Randy Johnson in 2004. "He was as good as I've seen all year, counting the almost perfect game he threw the first start of the year," catcher A.J. Pierzynski said. "His stuff was just nasty. He's throwing fastballs to the corners, he had a really good split tonight, and obviously he always has his slider. He just kept mixing it up and strikeouts kept coming and coming. Nights like that are fun." Darvish allowed five hits in seven scoreless innings. With the 14 punchouts, Darvish has the second-most strikeouts through the first 50 career games, 407, among players to debut since 1900, behind Dwight Gooden.

May 25th June 1st 2013 PO Box 1767 Grand Junction, CO 81502 www.fciol.com (970) 434-9093 We believe in play. We believe it’s more fun to play than to watch. To be on the field, not off. We believe in dirty uniforms, sweaty brows and sore muscles. We believe in putting one up from downtown. In a three run dinger and a corner blitz. We believe in grass stains, taped ankles, and big ol’ victory celebrations. future.coloradomesa.edu 5/29/13 CMU067-JUCO Program 9’x12’; plus .25 bleed, 4/0 2021 N. 12th Street • Grand Junction, CO 81501 • (970) 242-0920 www.YourCommunityHospital.com JUCO 2013 Feature Items 4 Banquet Speaker 6-7 2012 Tournament Results 10 Great Tournament Players 17 How is it made? 19 Mr. JUCO’s Birthday 23 Connect with Us 35 Sam Suplizio Field Makeover 37 Governor Vanderhoof 39 Former JUCO Allstar 46 Alpine Bank Scholarships 50-51 Let Us Remember Rosters and Bracket 16-39 Rosters 26-27 Bracket Entertainment 5 Entertainment Schedule 8 Word Search 11 & 43 Score Cards 20 Trivia 38 Trivia Answers JUCO 9 Scorekeeping Made Easy 21 JUCO Committee 24 Home Run Alley 25 Major League JUCO 40-41 Hall of Fame 44 JUCO Records 52-53 JUCO Sponsors 54 Division Map & Rules of Play Official Alpine Bank JUCO World Series Program Editor - Brian Wheeler Published by CPC Solutions Photography - Todd Bennett 2800 Printers Way • Grand Junction, CO 81506 Design - Brooke Jeschke, CPC Solutions 970-242-3312 • 800-332-1069 • fax 970-242-0360 Project Manager - Sarah Finocchio, CPC Solutions www.cpcsolutions.com Marketing and Ad Sales - CPC Solutions 2021 N.
