Bryce Harper took junior college baseball an d the JUCO World Series by storm in 2010 as he and the College of Southern Nevada qualified for the national tournament in Grand Junction. Just a short time after the tournament, Harper signed a $9.9 million contract with the and quickly rose through the minor leagues capping off his 2012 season winning the Rookie of the Year.

Las Vegas sports writer, Rob Miech’ s book, The Last Natural, chronicled Harper’s make-or-break season at CSN. Jamie Hamilton read the book and reached out to Miech to speak at the banquet. When the announcement was made, Hamilton said, “Miech is a great storyteller and we’re very pleased he is coming to speak at our banquet.”

Miech spent the 2010 season with the CSN Coyotes mingling in the dugout, the locker room, on the team bus, and in motel rooms. In his book, Miech delivers an account of the 17-year olds only season in collegiate baseball detailing Harper’s journey towards winning the 2010 Golden Spike award as the top amateur baseball player and becoming the number 1 selection in the 2010 draft.

Miech has been a sports writer for 25 years. During that time he mostly covered college including the UCLA Bruins who went on to become the 1994-95 national champions. While living in Los Angeles, Miech also covered more than 500 MLB games and is convinced that prepared him for his biggest writing venture. Miech has won several awards during his career and his work has appeared in CBS Sportsline, MLB.com, The Washington Post, USA Today, and the Las Vegas Sun. Photo provided courtesy of Rob Miech

When the 2012 season started Iowa Western Community College was ranked #4. By midseason the Reivers were firing on all cylinders and grabbed the #1 spot. They held onto that national ranking as they made their way to Grand Junction for the 2012 JUCO World Series.

The Reivers first game of the 2012 tournament quickly set the tone for the tournament as they faced off against San Jacinto. After suffering an 8-5 loss to the Gators, the Reivers needed to battle back through the losers’ bracket and won their next 4 games to advance to the championship game. San Jacinto continued to play winning baseball during the tournament as they advanced to the championship game for a rematch of the tournament opener.

The Iowa Western-San “Jac” finale would not disappoint the Grand Junction crowd. Both teams played hard knowing the title was on the line. In the end, Iowa Western claimed their 2nd national championship when they pulled out a 6-5 victory.

8 2013 Alpine Bank JUCO World Series Each year at the JUCO World Series I have watched fans feverishly fill out their score sheets in the program. To be honest, I have no idea what all that scribbling Scorekeeping means. This JUCO will be different. I am going to fill out my score sheets, but how do I do it? If you are like me, this looks like a daunting task, but never fear because together we will walk through the 101 of “Score Keeping Made Easy”. Seven of these some big significant league players pass players made appearances in multiple All-Star games. Before we get back to through our tournament. watching baseball, let’s take a moment to think back on those big names I mentioned. In 1986, Yavapai College brought a young pitcher by the name of who went on to make 6 All-Star appearances. In 2001 Curt added a World Series MVP award to his playing resume. came to our Tournament in 1982 with Middle Georgia College. David also made 3 appearances in All-Star games. Many of you might recall that in 1998 while pitching for the Yankees, David pitched a perfect game. In Major League Baseball history, only 23 people have ever pitched a perfect game. “Boomer,” as he was affectionately nicknamed, capped off his 1998 season with an MVP award from the Championship Series. Also in 1982, Triton College brought a future all-star with them. The late brought a big bat with him and established the highest batting average for the JUCO tournament at .688. Kirby went on to play with the and made 10 appearances in All-Star games. Kirby was the 1991 AL ALCS and the 1993 All Star MVP. Unfortunately, his playing career was cut short due to a retina condition. Just 6 years after his playing career, Kirby reached the pinnacle of his baseball career when he was selected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001. Kirby is the only member of our JUCO alumni to achieve this prestigious honor. In his only collegiate season Bryce Harper played for the College of Southern Nevada during the 2010 Tournament and went on to be the first player selected in the 2010 draft. Bryce began the 2012 season at Triple-A before making his first appearance in the big leagues with the Washington Nationals in late April. National League manager Tony LaRussa selected Bryce as one of h is reserve players for the 2012 team making him the youngest position player in major league history to be selected to an All-Star team. This 2010 JUCO player, who has been called a baseball prodigy, capped off his rookie season by being selected as the National League Rookie of the Year. This is also a first for a JUCO alumnus. With such a strong rookie season, it is hard to say just where he will rank among the JUCO elite. Of all the thousands of players to come through our tournament, this is a short list of some real high achievements from a few former JUCO players. After realizing just who we have had experience his first moment in the spotlight right here in Grand Junction, it’s easy to understand why we have such a great Tournament!

Mr. JUCO Celebrates His 6th Birthday

As part of the tournament’s 50th Anniversary in 2007, Mr. JUCO was introduced as the mascot of the JUCO World Series. For the past 6 years Mr. JUCO has worked hard representing the tournament by interacting with kids, young and old, in the Grand Junction area. However, as is often the case in baseball, his arrival to our tournament was by accident. You see, his story goes like this ……

As all fairy tales begin, once upon a time there was a young glove working hard to stay in the game. Day in and day out he was fielding ground balls and line drives. Nothing could get by him! Suddenly, on a hot August afternoon while attempting to field a sizzling ground ball at 3rd base, his future took a turn. After he reached the sharply hit ball, a string broke near his webbing and the ball trickled away for an error. Attempts to repair him failed and he was placed on a shelf and forgotten.

As luck would have it, Jamie Hamilton, the JUCO tournament director, came across the discarded, dried-up glove. As only a baseball player could do, Mr. Hamilton lovingly reconditioned the leather and brought the glove back to form. Restored to game shape, the glove jumped at an opportunity to get back in the game when Mr. Hamilton placed a new baseball into his pocket and crowned him as mascot of the JUCO World Series in May 2007. The rest is history – or as the fairy tales might say, “…. and he lived happily ever after.”

Mr. JUCO has been part of a team that works hard to bring smiles to fans of all ages at the ballpark while supporting a great tournament in Grand Junction. During the 2013 Junior College World Series, please join us as we celebrate Mr. JUCO’s 6th birthday.

Norm has been with Alpine Bank for thirty years.

His community involvement for Mesa County is legendary. He has served on numerous non-profit board of directors. He has also been a Trustee to CMU and helped steer the campus into the great facility it is today.

Norm’s passion for JUCO has no bounds. When there was competition to move this event to another site, Norm and his organization stepped up to the plate with a large sponsorship that has enabled the Grand Junction Baseball Committee to keep this tournament until 2035.

Norm has moved to Denver to lead the expansion of their banking services but his heart will always be with the western slope community.

Immediately after the 2011 JUCO tournament demolition crews began to tear down the old seating section along the 1st baseline of Sam Suplizio Field. The new “Tower at Lincoln Park” was unveiled just prior to the start of the 2012 JUCO tournament. We knew we had created something. Little did we know just how special.

Late in the summer of 2012 the field makeover received a nomination for a 2012 Sports Travel award by “SportsTravel” magazine for the Best Sports Event Series or Circuit. Just receiving a nomination was exciting. Other 2012 events in this category were: Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament, CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) Basketball Tournament, NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, and the NCAA Women’s College Softball World Series. We were competing in the same category as some huge Division I college events. After seeing the other nominations, we knew we were in a very elite group of events.

“SportsTravel” magazine established the following criteria for voters: 1) the organization and attendance at the event or series was superior. 2) The event or series provided a superior experience for the competitors and/or spectators. 3) Site(s) of the event or series enhanced the event or series. Considering the size of the other events, again, we were in pretty elite company as a nominee.

The October 2012 issue of Athletics Administration, the official publication of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), jointly featured 3 photos on the cover: facilities from the University of Southern California (USC), Southern Illinois University (SIU), and our “Tower at Lincoln Park.” This was another big honor to share the spotlight with a national audience.

In the end, the winner of the “SportsTravel” magazine Best Collegiate Sports Event Series or Circuit went to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. We have no doubt that our event is pretty special to all the participants and spectators that make a trip to the Junior College World Series. Just being mentioned in the same category as some very big Division I events validates our tournament as a class act to attend! September 1, 2012

In life as in sports the starting line sometimes is just as important as the finish line. Our history provides each of us a glimpse of the roadmap of events which, when joined together, highlight how we got to where we are today.

Nearly eight decades ago, a group of individuals, passionate about creating opportunities for the two-year college athlete, joined together and formed what we know today as the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association). During the early years of the Association, many obstacles and challenges were put in their path. Despite pressures to dissolve, these leaders never gave up and never gave in because they knew the end result was too important.

Perseverance, ingenuity, creativity and opportunity are the foundations upon which the NJCAA has stood since 1938. These same traits are reflected even more today through the Association’s 500-plus member colleges and nearly 60,000 student-athletes.

Quick Facts Throughout the 2012-2013 academic year, the NJCAA will proudly be sharing its rich 75-year history with the world. Just like the founders of the NJCAA faced challenges and difficulties, today’s student-athletes City: Chanute, KS face some seemingly insurmountable trials. College, work, athletics and life overall can be difficult. By looking back at previous challenges Population: 9,112 overcome, often one will find that their foundation is already in place to achieve success. Elevation: 958 feet Your team, your college as well as the NJCAA each have a unique Player(s) to watch: Conner Goedert, IF history. Join us in celebrating it proudly.
