NEWSLETTER #46 - 2007-08 FOUR-ON-FOUR DEFNSIVE TRANSITION DRILL 1. The drill begins with live four on four action taking place at a basket. On the shot by the offense or the command of "change" by a coach, a conversion takes place. If a shot is taken two forwards or bigs attack the offensive glass while the two guards get back on the shot. A coach is assigned the offensive rebounders and a second coach is assigned the two guards "getting back." 2. On the conversion, all four defenders must cross the halfcourt line in 2.5 seconds or the drill stops and the four converting defenders will run. As the drill continues the defense gets set and live four on four action takes place at the other end. Once again, on a shot by the offense or the command of "change" by a coach, a conversion takes place. There is no out of bounds. This action takes place for several minutes. The coaches are paying particular attention to offensive rebounding, getting the guards back on the shot and making sure all four defenders cross halfcourt in 2.5 seconds or less. 3. To ensure more shot attempts the shotclock can be shortened for the offense promoting more rebounding opportunities and more conversions. FOUR-ON-THREE OFFENSIVE MOVEMENT DRILL 1. The drill begins with a coach having the ball on the baseline under the basket. Three defensive players are facing the coach. There are four offensive players surrounding the three point line. 2. The coach passes the ball to one of the four offensive players. On the catch by an offensive player the offense can move anywhere in the halfcourt. Each offensive player is allowed two dribbles. 3. The three defenders closeout on each catch by the offense and begin to work together. One of the three defensive players must be guarding the basketball at all times. On a shot by the offense it is a four on three rebounding advantage. The defense must find a way to rebound the ball. Richardson, the outgoing director of the New York Gauchos, admits he often acts like a big brother to some players, and gives several second chances to others. It's a fault Richardson recognizes, but one he says he doesn't plan to change anytime soon. The only thing that will change is his home address. Richardson last Monday took a flight from New York to Cincinnati, where he'll begin his new gig as an assistant coach at Xavier University. Richardson was the Phil Jackson of the AAU circuit this summer, coaching the 17-and-under Gauchos to four tournament titles and leading a team of U.S. players to a gold medal in the USA Youth Development Festival in Colorado Springs, Colo. Under Richardson's watch, three Gauchos guards committed to Big East Schools and another four players will likely land at Division I programs by the end of the school year. He's served as the Gauchos director for the past three years and coached one of the most successful teams in the storied program's history, but Book is ready to turn the page on his notable run. Under Musketeers coach Sean Miller, Richardson will serve dual roles. He will be responsible for recruiting and providing individual instruction to Xavier guards. It's a role reversal for Richardson, who served as a point man for college coaches who recruited Gauchos guards Kemba Walker (Connecticut) Darryl Bryant (West Virginia) and Jordan Theodore (Seton Hall) over the summer. But it's one that he's well equipped for. "I bring them someone that can get players," said Richardson, who is 34. While his team emerged as one of the best AAU programs in the country - and Gauchos history - and ended the summer on a 17-game winning streak, Richardson emerged as a hot college coaching prospect. The summer circuit offered Richardson an opportunity to show college coaches that he could run a program. At the time, Richardson said that he wanted to get back to college coaching. Before he joined the Gauchos, Richardson worked at Marist College as an assistant under Matt Brady in 2004-05. Last year he was close to getting an assistant job at Providence, but another candidate was selected at the last minute. Xavier came calling this summer, after Richardson coached the USA Red squad to the gold medal at Colorado Springs in late June. "I feel like you're on stage all the time, you're always performing because you never know who's watching," Richardson said. Richardson, who grew up in the South Bronx and Harlem and played ball for Riverside Church and under Gary DeCesare at St. Raymond's high school, has been a showman all his life. Just ask University of Pittsburgh assistant Orlando Antigua, Richardson's former teammate at St. Ray's. Antigua recalls playing at a holiday tournament in Hawaii when he and Richardson were at St. Raymond's. The team went on a between-games boat ride, Antigua said, and when an entertainer asked for volunteers, Richardson naturally offered his services.
