The dialogue includes his education at Swarthmore College (Pennsylvania), St. Andrews University (Scotland), Colorado State University (Fort Collins, Colorado) where he became a social studies teacher, and Harvard (Cambridge, Massachusetts) where he pursued, but did not complete, a Ph.D. in education. Michener's experiences as a textbook editor at Macmillan Publishers and in the U.S. Navy during World War II are part of the discourse. The exchange elaborates on how Michener began to write fiction, focuses on his great success as a writer, and notes that he and his wife donated over $100 million to educational institutions over the years. Advances in Seafood Byproducts 351 Alaska Sea Grant College Program • AK-SG-03-01, 2003 Trends in the Utilization and Production of Seafood Byproducts Hans Nissen Atlas-Stord, Inc., Kansas City, Missouri Abstract Seafood companies in the North Pacific and Alaska generate a significant volume of seafood byproducts and could benefit environmentally and economically by utilizing these byproducts. Today many of the compa- nies have integrated a fish meal plant to process seafood byproduct into valuable high quality fish meal and oil which is sold worldwide in com- petition with other protein meals. In order to justify the investment in a production facility to utilize the byproduct the annual volume must be considered. The trend has been to combine the byproduct from various plants in order to have enough volume to make the operation feasible. In Alaska with many small processors at remote locations this can be a difficult task, and the reason much of the seafood byproduct today is still being dumped or disposed at landfills. We have considered a pro- cess where the byproduct is collected at the different sites and brought to a central location where it is hydrolyzed into silage and dried using a carrier liquid drying process (CLD) producing a stable product that can be marketed worldwide. Introduction As a fish meal equipment manufacturer we are in many cases the first in line to get the call when a fish processor, for various reasons, must con- sider how to utilize the fish byproduct from his process. The reasons can include new environmental regulations regarding disposal of byproduct, or an increase in disposal cost from the local landfill or from the person who hauls the byproduct away. -

We do this in support of our colleagues in the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA “Statement Against Anti-Asian Violence”) and the Black Caucus of The American Library Association (BCALA “Statement Condemning Increased Violence and Racism Towards Black Americans and People of Color”). To this day, many Alaskans are living with trauma resulting from America’s legacy of cultural erasure and racism. In particular, Alaska Natives have suffered and continue to suffer. Despite brave and tireless advocacy by individuals and organizations, institutional racism and systems of oppression remain to this day, resisting growing efforts to tear them down. Many Asian American and Pacific Islander, Black, Indigenous and other People of Color make Alaska their home today. The city of Anchorage boasts the three most ethno-racially diverse neighborhoods in the country1. AA/PI and BIPOC people represent ~42% of Alaska’s total population and are integral to our libraries and the communities we serve (U.S. Census Quick Facts Alaska). As of 2019, 7.9 percent of Alaskans reported Asian or Pacific Islander descent and Alaska Economic Trends (2014) reported that, “people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent form the fastest-growing racial group in Alaska, expanding by 60 percent between 2000 and 2010 — a gain of more than 17,000 people.” Libraries, at their core value, are communities where all are welcome. -

Hébert 2008 Acknowledgments At a cocktail party after an academic conference not long ago, I found myself in conversation with another anthropologist who had attended my paper presentation earlier that day. He told me that he had been fascinated to learn that something as “mundane” as salmon could be linked to so many important sociocultural processes. Mundane? My head spun with confusion as I tried to reciprocate chatty pleasantries. How could anyone conceive of salmon as “mundane”? I was so confused by the mere suggestion that any chance of probing his comment further passed me by. As I drifted away from the conversation, it occurred to me that a great many people probably deem salmon as mundane as any other food product, even if they may consider Alaskan salmon fishing a bit more exotic. At that moment, I realized that I was the one who carried with me a particularly pronounced sense of salmon’s significance—one that I shared with, and no doubt learned from, the people with whom I conducted research. The cocktail-party exchange made clear to me how much I had thoroughly adopted some of the very assumptions I had set out simply to study. It also made me smile, because it revealed how successful those I got to know during my fieldwork had been in transforming me from an observer into something more of a participant. -

___________________________________________IOTC-2019-WPEB15-48 Issues related to adoption of subsurface gillnetting to reduce bycatch in Pakistan Muhammad Moazzam WWF-Pakistan, Karachi, Pakistan ([email protected]) and Muhammad Farhan Khan Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Government of Pakistan, Karachi, Pakistan ([email protected]) and Abstract Gillnet is a popular fishing method used for catching tuna and tuna like fishes especially by small scale fisheries of coastal states of the Indian Ocean. However, gillnets are known for extremely high bycatch which includes not only commercially important fish species but also a large number of non-target endangered, threatened and protected (ETP) species. Information about gillnet bycatch is not well known from major coastal states, however, studies initiated by WWF-Pakistan provide comprehensive information about bycatch of gillnet fisheries of Pakistan. It is estimated that more than 12,000 cetaceans and 29,000 sea turtles used to be annually entangled in the gillnet fisheries of Pakistan alone. Their numbers may be equally higher in other countries of the northern Arabian Sea where a large gillnet fleet is based. Considering high bycatch of ETP species, WWF-Pakistan introduced subsurface gillnetting in Pakistan as a mean for reducing entanglement and mortality of at least cetaceans and turtles. Placing gillnet below 2 m proved to a success, as catches of target species of gillnet fisheries including yellowfin, longtail and skipjack tunas increased substantially whereas catches of some important species such as billfish and dolphinfish substantially decreased. However, high catches of target species i.e. yellowfin, longtail and skipjack tunas compensates for the losses incurred due to decreased catches of these two species group. -

LOCAL NO. 7 Accession No. 3927-001 GUIDE HISTORY The Cannery Workers' and Farm Laborers' Union was organized June 19, 1933 in Seattle to represent the primarily Filipino-American laborers who worked in the Alaska salmon canneries. Filipino Alaskeros first appeared in the canneries around 1911. In the 1920s as exclusionary immigration laws went into effect, they replaced the Japanese, who had replaced the Chinese in the canneries. Workers were recruited through labor contractors who were paid to provide a work crew for the summer canning season. The contractor paid workers wages and other expenses. This system led to many abuses and harsh working conditions from which grew the movement toward unionization. The CWFLU, under the leadership of its first President, Virgil Duyungan, was chartered as Local 19257 by the American Federation of Labor in 1933. On December 1, 1936 an agent of a labor contractor murdered Duyungan and Secretary Aurelio Simon. -

Interrelated aspects of technology, site structure, and subsistence patterns in central Alaska are synthesized using a comprehensive database of radiocarbon-dated components. Microblade technology is examined with respect to broad patterns of technology, settlement, and subsistence. Striking changes in the archaeological record during the Late Holocene (~1000 cal BP), including the loss of microblades, are explored through three general models: technological and economic change within existing populations, population replacement or assimilation, and taphonomic bias. The evidence most strongly supports the first: a shift from multiseasonal large mammal hunting strategies with associated high residential mobility to exploitation of seasonally overabundant resources (caribou, fish) and increased logistical mobility and reliance on storage.
