Siemens Technology at the New Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
Siemens Technology at the new Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Lake Buena Vista, FL – Since 1937, Snow White and Seven Dwarfs have been entertaining audiences of all ages. As of May 28, 2014, the story found a new home within the largest expansion at the Magic Kingdom® Park. The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, along with a host of new attractions, shows and restaurants now call New Fantasyland home. The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, an exciting family coaster, features a forty-foot drop and a series of curves that send guests seated in mine cars swinging and swaying through the hills and caves of the enchanted forest. As part of the systems used to manage the operation of this new attraction, Walt Disney Imagineering chose Siemens to help automate many of the attraction‟s applications. Thanks to Siemens innovations, Sleepy, Doc, Grumpy, Bashful, Sneezy, Happy and Dopey entertain the guests while Siemens technologies are hard at work throughout the infrastructure of the attraction. This includes a host of Siemens‟ systems to ensure that the attraction runs safely and smoothly so that the mine cars are always a required distance from each other. Siemens equipment also delivers real-time information to the Cast Members operating the attraction for enhanced safety, efficiency and communication. The same Safety Controllers, SINAMICS safety variable frequency drives and Scalance Ethernet switches are also found throughout other areas of the new Fantasyland such as the new Dumbo the Flying Elephant®, and Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid attractions. And Siemens Fire and Safety technologies are found throughout Cinderella Castle. -
Disney and His Worlds
DISNEY AND HIS WORLDS Disney and his Worlds is a thorough overview of what is by now quite a large literature on the Disney organization, in particular the theme parks and their significance for contemporary culture. The author looks at Walt Disney’s life and how his biography has been constructed; the Walt Disney Company in the years after his death; and the writings of various commentators on the Disney theme parks. He raises important issues about the parks: whether they are harbingers of postmodernism; the significance of consumption at the parks; the nature of the parks as tourism; and the representation of past and future. The discussion of theme parks is central but links with the presentation of Walt Disney’s biography and his organization by showing how central economic and business considerations have been in their development, and how the significance of these considerations is typically marginalized in order to place an emphasis on fantasy and magic. In the process, the book questions the assumption that the parks are sites of postmodern sensibility. Disney films, merchandizing and theme parks are one of the defining features of our times and one of the more effective elements in American cultural imperialism. It is impossible to imagine an encyclopedic sociology of contemporary culture that did not devote at least a chapter to Disney and his Worlds. In particular the parks are often employed as examples in areas like cultural studies, the sociology of postmodernism, tourism and leisure studies, while Walt Disney and his organization are important to the area of organization studies. -

Because of Its Massive Size and the Long Length of Many Of
General Touring Philosophy: Because of its massive size and the long length of many of its attractions, Epcot is best experienced over two days, particularly now that Frozen Ever After is such a high priority. Most visitors will want to use FastPass+ at Frozen on at least one day and otherwise keep mostly to one side of the park. This way, you cut down on the amount of walking necessary and you won’t run into waits longer than a few minutes all day. On your Test Track day, visit Future World East and the World Showcase Pavilions from Mexico through the U.S, riding Frozen with FP+ in the early afternoon. On your Soarin’ day, hit Future World West and the Pavilions from Canada through Japan, potentially adding Frozen with FP+ on the way out. With just one day, things are more complicated if you want to try to do Soarin’, Test Track, Frozen, and IllumiNations. The best way to accomplish that is to ride Test Track at rope drop, use FastPass+ at Frozen, ride Soarin’ around 7pm, and then see IllumiNations after. If you’re willing to forego seeing IllumiNations, Frozen typically has an actual wait under 30 minutes at the very end of the night, but the ride may not be operational. If you’re willing to risk it, ride Test Track or Soarin’ first thing, use FastPass+ at the other, and get in line for Frozen about five minutes before park close. Those skipping Frozen can also do this and instead enjoy IllumiNations. Characters: Joy and Sadness inside Innoventions West are the highest priority and see waits of 30 to 60+ minutes. -

JAMES MADISON UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH JOURNAL Animating Gender Roles: How Disney is Redefining the Modern Princess Juliana Garabedian A prominent voice in the entertainment industry, Disney impacts many facets of society, including how we define gender roles. For the past 80 years, America’s younger generations have taken social cues from their favorite animated movies, learning to act like their favorite princes and princesses. Over the past few decades, Disney has broken through the concept of the damsel in distress and transitioned to represent and even advance modern feminist ideals. From likable protagonists to prominent images and popular products, the movies reinforce the gender roles they present because children learn to imitate the characters during playtime. 22 JAMES MADISON UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH JOURNAL he idea of being a princess is not a novel fantasy; it In Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Snow White is portrayed has been around for centuries. -

One of the two days has you arrive prior to 9:00am, so you can visit the headlining Future World attractions and move through some of the less popular Future World attractions with short waits. The other day has you arrive later in the afternoon or early evening to visit as much of the World Showcase as you like and see IllumiNations. In many ways, it’s similar to the One-Day Standard Plan, only split up into two days. This type of touring plan works well in a variety of situations. You may want to use the evening portion of the plan on your arrival day, so you have an opportunity to settle in before heading off to a Park. You may want to use the morning portion on a Fantasmic day, so you can easily Park Hop over to Hollywood Studios at night after spending most of the day touring Epcot. You may also want to Park Hop over to Magic Kingdom for Main Street Electrical Parade and Wishes. You might find yourself spending half the day at Animal Kingdom, but want to head over to Epcot for dinner, IllumiNations, and some World Showcase shopping.
