Nike Yetunde Ayo Weaving Christian Spirituality into Women’s Wellness: Narratives from the African Diaspora in Canada by Nike Yetunde Ayo A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation University of Alberta © Nike Yetunde Ayo, 2016 Abstract This research highlights the significant role spirituality plays in how a group of African diasporic women in Canada understand and experience wellness in their daily lives. The central research question that I pose is: How do Christian African diasporic women in Canada make sense of and experience the interweaving of spirituality and wellness in their daily lives? Wellness as a construct emerged following World War II to challenge and offer an alternative to traditional biomedical views of health as not merely the absence of disease (Panelli & Tipa, 2007). Generally, wellness has been understood to be a highly integrated, synergistic, multidimensional concept that exists along a continuum rather than as an end state (Adams, Bezner, Drabb, Zambarano, & Steinhardt, 2000; Harari, Waehler, & Rogers, 2005; Miller & Foster, 2010; Roscoe, 2009). Since then there has been an extensive amount of literature that has focused on defining and measuring wellness using various constructs and quantitative psychometric scales (Roscoe, 2009). However, despite the vast research that has gone into conceptualizing and measuring wellness, there has been little empirical research examining the lived experiences of wellness and how the various dimensions of wellness may be interrelated (Roscoe, 2009). Utilizing Roscoe’s (2009) seven dimensional holistic model of wellness, which entails social, physical, emotional, intellectual, occupational, spiritual, and environmental components, my study provides an empirical qualitative investigation of how the spiritual dimension is integrated into the broader experiences of wellness as a whole. This examination captures the rich background, depth, and meaning of such experiences in the everyday lives of Christian African diasporic women in Canada. Because such experiences do not exist within a vacuum, I also highlight the important role of diaspora in shaping the women’s lived experiences. Faist’s ii (2010) model of diasporas, as consisting of three key variables—reason for migration, transnational connections and activities, and settlement abroad—also guides my analysis of the context of the women’s lived experiences. I use a narrative methodological approach to structure my research and in doing so construct two research stories/narratives utilizing an amalgamation of participants’ words derived from the transcribed one-on-one interviews conducted. The first narrative illustrates the women’s journey within the African diaspora and the second highlights how their experiences of wellness are inseparable from their Christian faith. The women in this study, while maintaining a certain level of transnationality, have settled very well in Canada and have established it as home. This is evident through both their words and their emotional and psychosocial sentiments about life in Canada as well as their attainment of their intellectual and occupational goals in their new homeland. Spirituality proved to be a major positive force woven into the wellness experiences of diasporic women. While they understood wellness to encompass Roscoe’s various dimensions of the term, their faith had a significant influence on how they experienced each of these dimensions. The findings and analysis from this study help to redress the paucity of research on the lived experiences of wellness as well as the experiences of African diasporic women in Canada. Thus, this research will be beneficial for those engaged in the settlement and wellbeing of this particular immigrant group as well as those interested in the fields of wellness studies and the African diaspora in Canada, particularly in terms of the role that faith can play in members’ of this community lives. iii Preface This thesis is an original work by Nike Ayo.     MN State Fairgrounds, St. Paul, MN | September 28-30, 2018 nd what a festival it was! The main barn, auction barn and Coliseum were beautifully decorated in the Fall Fest’s signature colors of red, orange and gold. Although the weather was a little chilly, nothing dampened the enthusiasm of the MAHB members, judges A and show participants. Opening ceremonies had the colors presented beautifully by Tarah Pyka. A first-time flag carrier, Tara and her 14-year-old gelding, Donagain De, gave a beautiful presentation even though he is totally blind. Over the three days, with 36 classes on the schedule, the barn and walkways were filled with handlers, grooms and riders. Throughout the show, Minnesota Breeder members provided an array of food and beverages. The “snack bar” in the main barn served up complimentary doughnuts, coffee and snacks throughout the show. Also provided to everyone, wild rice soup on Friday and chili on Saturday. At noon on Saturday, playing to a standing room only crowd, guests took a trip down an Arabian horse and Minnesota Breeders memory lane with guest speakers Dick Ames, Walter Mishek and Larry Jerome. A highlight of Saturday afternoon was the presentation to Eleanor Hamilton of the first Minnesota Breeders Eleanor Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award. One of the club’s founding members, Eleanor has been a steadfast participant in the club and this show. Whether she was in the saddle competing or presenting the flag, Eleanor is always memorable. She has contributed so much to the Minnesota Breeders program and to the Arabian horse industry.

    THE AKROTERIA OF THE NIKE TEMPLE' (PLATES35-37) T HE small Ionic Temple of Athena Nike on the Acropolis was designed by Kalli- krates, an architect of the Parthenon, as a monument to the Greek victory over the Persians. A decree of about 449 B.c. authorized plans to be drawn up, but the temple was not actually begun until after the Propylaea, and probably dates between 427 and 424 B.c.2 When the temple was completed, the bastion on which it stood was enclosed by a parapet of marble decorated with Nikai. Professor Carpenter's interest in these reliefs and his admirable study of them are well known. The sculptural decoration of the temple itself consisted of a frieze depicting an assembly of the gods (east), battle scenes between Greeks and Persians (south), and Greeks against Greeks (north and west).2 The pedimental figures, which were fastened to the floor of the pediment by mneansof round pins, have unfortunately disappearedwithout a trace. The akroteria too are lost, but they are mentioned in a number of fourth century treasury records.4 The most nearly complete of these inscriptions, I.G., 12, 1425, dated 368/7 B.C.,lists gold from the akroteria under the heading ra3&craOh IapEXL/3oEv ypvai-& a"c KcU Tr?7Kra Kaat v1roxa1iXKa (lines 85-86).     Town Manager's Report for November 17-21, 2014 Items to report on from the previous week include the following: Planning/ Building/ Engineering Update: The City Engineer’s Report is attached. Items in red text represent updates in project status. At the Tuesday November 18 Fast Track hearing, a new residence and pool was approved for property at 13686 Page Mill Road. Three neighbors were in attendance. A condition of approval was modified to allow the installation of a pathway along Page Mill Road to be located within the public right-of-way in order to preserve trees. On Thursday, November 20 a Housing Element Update Community Workshop was held. Approximately 35 residents attended the meeting and provided input on second units and affordable housing. Staff will be compiling the results of the community survey and working with a Sub-Committee of the Planning Commission to develop the draft Housing Element. It is anticipated that the first public hearing will be held in January 2015. The October 2014 planning and building permit report has been revised to include data from 2013 and 2012 (see attached). Congratulations to Community Development Specialist Jaime McAvoy for completing the Disneyland Half Marathon in Anaheim on November 16 and the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco on October 19! Public Safety Update: The Sheriff’s weekly report and monthly public safety report for October are attached. Administrative Services Update: The Finance and Investment Committee (FIC) held a meeting on Monday, November 17, 2014. The study focuses on three specific Attic cult heroes with a strong presence both in the Greek world and on Athenian vases: Herakles, Theseus, and Ajax. Although individual studies have been published regarding various aspects of these three heroes, such as subject matter, cult worship, literary presence, and social history, the current one departs from them by categorizing, comparing, and contrasting the different portrayals of the three chosen heroes. Using Athenian vases as the primary form of evidence, the current study endeavors to uncover how individual iconography can – or cannot – identify the heroic figure. By using an iconographic approach of looking at attributes, dress, gestures, poses, and composition, a more complete picture of the image of the hero may be understood. Evidence of both the cult of, and importance of, the Athenian hero is stressed both in ancient texts and through archaeological evidence, thus supplemental material is taken into consideration. Illustrations of Greek heroes can be found on a variety of vase shapes of various techniques, and the accompanying catalogue includes almost 300 examples.
