Jelgava in Figures for 2010 Briefly About Jelgava ____________________________________________________________ Honourable citizens and guests of Jelgava! Daily life causes one to be watchful, to analyze events and realize the seriousness of the situation, because the lives of our peers in all aspects – economics, the social realm, education – depend on it. In the previous years Jelgava started down a road that we must keep walking – long-term investment programmes for the development of the city infrastructure and the education system, the support of entrepreneurial activity, the provision of social services. The year has been difficult in all fields. Yet together and united we are a force to drive forward all that is envisioned. A force that will keep firm the foundations of our country, our city and our family! I invite you to investigate the newest statistical information about Jelgava, thus witnessing a testimony for the fact that our combined efforts have been fruitful. Andris Rāviņš Chairman of Jelgava City Council 1 Briefly About Jelgava ____________________________________________________________ Jelgava is located in the southern part of the Zemgale plain. It is the fourth largest city in Latvia. The total area of Jelgava is 60.3 km2, of which: - water covers 2.72 km2 - parks cover 1.62 km2 - forests cover 12.64 km2 Jelgava is the only city in Latvia that contains the country’s small coat of arms within its coat of arms. The city received the coat of arms at the same time as it received city rights, in 1573. The first coat of arms depicted a crowned stag head on a raspberry red field, the current coat of arms contains an elk head on a crimson field. On October 28th, 1938 the city’s flag was approved. The flag is divided into two parts of equal breadth: the upper half is dark blue, the lower – red; in the centre of the flag is the Jelgava city coat of arms. This is not an injustice but a reality. The real injustice is that conditions are not the same for everyone and, in particular, that some clubs deliberately go into the red to reinforce their teams by means of costly transfers. Legislation is stricter in some places than others and it is clearly beyond the means of an organisation such as UEFA to interfere in national procedures. This cannot, however, be used as an excuse to do nothing. We cannot advocate respect in every possible form and champion fair play without encouraging them in the financial domain too. The first step in this direction has already been taken: by introducing IN THIS ISSUE a compulsory licence for clubs participating in European competitions, Football united UEFA has already laid down criteria to guarantee the financial health of clubs against racism 03 and, by extension, the orderly running of its competitions. Study Group Scheme 04 Our task now – and we have to make this a priority – is to refine Exhibition in Liverpool 08 the club licensing system and ensure equal treatment throughout Europe.

A year also separates Düsseldorf and Zagreb, my first year as UEFA president. I do not want to go over or even just summarise what has been achieved in that time – such reports tend to be exercises which aim to present achievements in the best light possible. Words are vital when it comes to presenting a manifesto, but then it is the deeds that matter, and I hope that everyone has been able to see for themselves that the manifesto I presented at the UEFA Congress in Düsseldorf was not simply a list of good intentions but a programme that we got down to right away, for the IN THIS ISSUE sake of the unity of European football and the defence of its interests. Dialogue and the desire to find joint solutions with the national associations, UEFA Champions League first knockout round 03 leagues, clubs, professional footballers and everyone else involved in our game are the keystone of our efforts to build new and positive relations between all European Elite Women’s Coaches’ Forum 08 football stakeholders.

To, ka šādām, it kā diskusijām, kurās liela daļa komentāru atsūtīti no vienas konkrētas IP adreses, nav nekādas jēgas, piekrīt Jelgavnieki.lv īpašnieks Kristians Rozenvalds.
