  • A Review on Historical Earth Pigments Used in India's Wall Paintings
heritage Review A Review on Historical Earth Pigments Used in India’s Wall Paintings Anjali Sharma 1 and Manager Rajdeo Singh 2,* 1 Department of Conservation, National Museum Institute, Janpath, New Delhi 110011, India; [email protected] 2 National Research Laboratory for the Conservation of Cultural Property, Aliganj, Lucknow 226024, India * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: Iron-containing earth minerals of various hues were the earliest pigments of the prehistoric artists who dwelled in caves. Being a prominent part of human expression through art, nature- derived pigments have been used in continuum through ages until now. Studies reveal that the primitive artist stored or used his pigments as color cakes made out of skin or reeds. Although records to help understand the technical details of Indian painting in the early periodare scanty, there is a certain amount of material from which some idea may be gained regarding the methods used by the artists to obtain their results. Considering Indian wall paintings, the most widely used earth pigments include red, yellow, and green ochres, making it fairly easy for the modern era scientific conservators and researchers to study them. The present knowledge on material sources given in the literature is limited and deficient as of now, hence the present work attempts to elucidate the range of earth pigments encountered in Indian wall paintings and the scientific studies and characterization by analytical techniques that form the knowledge background on the topic. Studies leadingto well-founded knowledge on pigments can contribute towards the safeguarding of Indian cultural heritage as well as spread awareness among conservators, restorers, and scholars.

  • Police System and Transformation of Criminal Tribes in the Princely State of Pudukkottai
Review Of Research Vol.1,Issue.11 ,Aug; 12pp.1-4 Available online at www.reviewofresearch.net ISSN:-2249-894X ORIGINAL ARTICLE Police System And Transformation Of Criminal Tribes In The Princely State Of Pudukkottai K.MURUGIAH Associate Professor of History Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Tirunelveli-627 012 Email : [email protected] Abstract: Pudukkottai, a Princely State, was ruled by the Thondaimans. While the de jure ruler was Thondaiman, the de facto ruler was the British. As there was no organised opposition to the British , they wanted to maintain and keep peace in Pudukkottai also. But Pudukkottai presented certain sociological riddles like the highly intractable Kallar and Arimalam Korawars. They posed a veritable threat to the affluent Chettiyars. As the native Ruler and Kallars belonged to the same community, bringing the culprits under the administration of impartial Justice seemed very difficult. Taking all these factors into consideration, the British imposed their own system of Police Administration and the Thondaimans readily obliged. Before analyzing the Police Administration in Pudukkottai, it is necessary to know communities that were considered the criminal classes of this State, their status, activities, character, behaviour etc. CRIMINAL CLASSES The exigencies of colonial transformation and prevalent European ideas provided the British Rule in India with the frames of reference for the classification of the native population of India. Through an elaborate corpus of revenue, judicial and police records, the British Raj produced for itself a colonial archive, a ready-at-hand knowledge .This vast repository of information helped the British to formulate the manual to face the challenge of traditional, unchanging and to that extent, anticipated behaviour of subject population.
