  • Hainaut Loop
PRESS INVITATION | BRUSSELS, 24 August 2020 Hainaut Loop Project presentation and start of the procedure to apply for a sector plan revision Elia, the Belgian high-voltage transmission system operator, is planning to build the Hainaut Loop in order to meet the challenges raised by the energy transition. The project involves building a high-voltage line between the Avelgem and Courcelles substations. Hainaut Loop This project addresses four major objectives: - Ensuring competitive and affordable access to electricity; - Increasing the accommodation capacity for all renewable energies; - Boosting the economic attractiveness of Wallonia, more specifically Hainaut Province; - Increasing security of supply for consumers. More specifically, the project involves connecting the Avelgem high-voltage substation (in Flanders) to the Courcelles high-voltage substation. In Wallonia, the project will run through the municipalities of Mont-de-l’Enclus, Celles, Frasnes- les-Anvaing, Leuze-en-Hainaut, Ath, Chièvres, Brugelette, Lens, Soignies, Braine-le-Comte, Ecaussinnes, Seneffe, Pont-à-Celles and Courcelles. Application to revise the sector plan Since this is a high-voltage connection (380 kV), it is considered a key piece of electricity transmission infrastructure. Accordingly, Elia is required to apply for a revision to the sector plan before launching the procedure to apply for the planning permit that will ultimately enable the infrastructure to be built. This is a multi-year process that Elia would like to start this 7 September by submitting the application to the relevant authorities. Contact Project Communication Mélanie Laroche | +32 483 58 93 23 | [email protected] Elia System Operator SA/NV Boulevard de l'Empereur 20 | Keizerslaan 20 | 1000 Brussels | Belgium 1 For a more detailed presentation of the project and how it will proceed, we would like to invite you to the press conference scheduled for Friday, 4 September at 10 a.m.

Anti-system parties were the main winners, especially the radical right-wing populist Flemish Interest/Vlaams Belang (VB) in Flanders and the communist Workers’ Party of Belgium/Parti du travail de Belgique (PTB) in Wallonia. By contrast, the three traditional party families (Socialists, Liberals and Christian Democrats) recorded historically low results. This was also a politically tense year, with the enduring impossibility of forming a new Cabinet to replace the Michel I minority caretaker government. Election report As in 2014, the federal, regional and European Parliament elections took place simultaneously. They featured a high level of aggregate volatility and recorded historically low scores for the three traditional party families, that is, Socialists, Liberals and Christian Democrats on the Flemish and Francophone sides: together they only gathered 45 per cent of the vote at the federal elections. This is the first time these parties have fallen below 50per cent, in stark contrast to figures oscillating between 80 and 65 per cent between the 1970s and the 2000s (Istace 2019), and way below the preceding record low of 58 per cent in 2014 (Rihoux et al.

  • BRASSERIE SILLY SCOTCH SILLY Scotch Ale
BRASSERIE SILLY SCOTCH SILLY Scotch Ale ABV: 8.00% PACKAGING: 11.2 oz bottles COLOR: Red-brown TASTE: Scotch Ale with a smooth, really velvety taste and a hoppy bitterness. It is brewed with pure malt, English hops and some sugars. FOOD PAIRINGS: Hearty dishes like soups and stews. An excellent dessert beer. When served cold with spicy curry and jalapeno dishes, the sweetness of the beer balances the spiciness of the food. STYLE: Scotch Ale Brasserie de Silly, a sixth generation independent family brewer, is located South West of Brussels in the Hainaut Province of Wallonia. Silly is a little dormant farming village just outside the old city of Enghien, which was once world famous for its tapestries. Larger farms used to have their own brewery up to well into the 20th century. The written history of the Brasserie de Silly starts in 1852, when Nicolas Meynsbrughen bought the farm and started to keep records on his brewing activities. All farming activities were ended around 1950, when the focus turned to brewing quality beers. One of the greatest Scotch Ales of the world. Since WWI destroyed the hops growing in Belgium, and the British army had access to hops from Kent in England, this beer has been brewed since it creation exclusively with Kent hops. The velvety mouth feel, the darker red-ruby color, and the licorice undertones are typical for a real Scotch Ale. Candy sugar is added with the yeast in the bottle, and in the keg, for the refermentation. This extra touch of sweetness is clearly present.

  • Variable Aims of Flint Extraction Sites in the Mons Basin (Province of Hainaut, Belgium) Within the Lithic Economy of the Neolithic Jean-Philippe Collin
Mining for a week or for centuries: Variable aims of flint extraction sites in the Mons Basin (Province of Hainaut, Belgium) within the lithic economy of the Neolithic Jean-Philippe Collin Université de Namur, Département d’Histoire de l’Art et Archéologie, Rue de Bruxelles n°61, B-5000 Namur, Belgium. Email: [email protected] Abstract: The Mons Basin (Province of Hainaut, western Belgium) is a geologically rich region, particularly from the point of view of Upper Cretaceous sedimentary deposits, conducive to an important flint gathering activity during the whole regional Prehistory. Focusing on the Neolithic period, indications of flint procurement as early as the end of the 6th millennium have been recorded, but there are concrete evidences of mining sites in the region since the second half of the 5th millennium. Flint extraction activities have lasted at least until the second half of the 3rd millennium. According to literature and recent researches, eleven sites could be extraction sites, including the World Heritage site of Spiennes. This paper critically assesses the accuracy of the data available and focuses on the issue of the unequal function of these extraction sites and their socio-economic function for Neolithic communities.
