Tom Mills ETHIOPIA f the 7 billion people of the world, more than 5 billion have no relationship with OJesus. For most of them, the key element is the local church. Since its start in 2010, the Global Church Movements (GCM) ministry of Cru has been working alongside churches and believers to tackle this problem. According to GCM’s strategy consultant, Keith Seabourn, GCM takes what Cru does best with evangelism and discipleship and trains leaders within churches to do the same. “We train them so that within the course of a year, they plant a new church and identify at least two multipliers, who will then go out to do the same process,” says Keith. -

Christianity and Communication Studies Network, 1(3), http://theccsn.com/book- reviews/?r=4254#post-4254 The succinct pronouncement made by Terry Lindvall and Andrew Quicke in the conclusion of Celluloid Sermons is that while the vast majority of films made within the Evangelical tribe between 1930 and the mid-1980s was criticized for “substandard artistic quality and content” they still “were successful in what they were intended to be.” The authors’ definitions, records, and assessments of Christian movies is one of the most thorough compendiums of Christian film history; it is also an insightful discussion guided by the two scholars who could provide it like no one else. Lindvall, whose previous work Sanctuary Cinema details the history of the American Protestant church in film from the turn of the century through the 1920s, is the go-to scholar on the history of nominally Christian films. And Quicke is his good company, with extensive personal experience to add to his scholarly prowess. While the two run the risk of burdening the reader with details (which some readers, this reviewer included, are happy to have at their disposal even if it does make the text harder to process), the nature of the subject matter and the intent of the text calls for thorough investigation and discussion. -

Shreve Doctor of Philosophy The University of Edinburgh 2016 ABSTRACT Framing the Sacred: An Analysis of Religious Films in Zimbabwe This is a study of the production, content, distribution, and reception of different religious films in Zimbabwe, with an emphasis on the audience’s initial reception of the films. Informants’ self-identified religious beliefs and their reception of these selected films are analyzed primarily by using qualitative methods to understand better the interplay between film and religion in Zimbabwe. The films studied in this research are The Jesus Film (1979) created by Campus Crusade for Christ and indigenous, short Jesus films created locally in Zimbabwe in 2012. In order to answer the central research questions of this study, two main approaches are employed: the first is a holistic approach to the analysis of these films. -

Examining the way in which the spectator is prompted by certain traditions of cinematic language and interpretation, this dissertation demonstrates how the representation of the Jesus in cinema must by definition always insinuate the sacrosanct, even if the symbol or image is presented in a context perceived to be secular. -

Mann, Chair This dissertation examines the relationship between Hollywood and American Christianity from 1998 to the present—a time frame that encompasses the recent rise of the “Christian blockbusters.” This period saw unprecedented interaction between Hollywood and what has been called the “Christian film industry,” or “Holywood”—a loose and ever-changing assortment of Christian film companies and independent filmmakers that have operated in one form or another since the silent era and whose productions were, until recently, primarily relegated to local theatrical markets, church screenings, and Christian television. Although historically unprecedented, this new interaction between Hollywood and “Holywood” can be understood as a clear extension of the rise of both new media technology and transmedia industries. This ii dissertation argues that a once not-for-profit filmmaking exercise by Christian filmmakers, for the purposes of inner-church ministry, has now become a huge business built upon selling films to churches as resources for both inner-church ministry and outer-church evangelism. Indeed, the business has grown so profitable that Hollywood studios now regularly market their mainstream wares to Christian audiences as well, utilizing the rise of middle-men marketing firms to reach faith-based demographics and speak a Christian sales language unfamiliar to most studios. -
