Framing the Sacred: An Analysis of Religious Films in Zimbabwe Adam T. Shreve Doctor of Philosophy The University of Edinburgh 2016 ABSTRACT Framing the Sacred: An Analysis of Religious Films in Zimbabwe This is a study of the production, content, distribution, and reception of different religious films in Zimbabwe, with an emphasis on the audience’s initial reception of the films. Informants’ self-identified religious beliefs and their reception of these selected films are analyzed primarily by using qualitative methods to understand better the interplay between film and religion in Zimbabwe. The films studied in this research are The Jesus Film (1979) created by Campus Crusade for Christ and indigenous, short Jesus films created locally in Zimbabwe in 2012. In order to answer the central research questions of this study, two main approaches are employed: the first is a holistic approach to the analysis of these films. -

Yuckman DOI: 10.7252/Paper. 000058 34 | Te Jesus Film: Between Global Christianization and World Christianity ABSTRACT Tough the impact of translated written material in the spread of Christianity has been analyzed at length, less consideration has been given to the more recent turn to evangelistic non-literate media. Evangelistic flms, for instance, have become common missionary tools, especially in places which lack technological infrastructure. Teir success depends on efective translation so that indigenous communities, in the spirit of Pentecost, might hear the good news in their native tongue. A prominent test case for the vernacular principle is the JESUS flm (Sykes/Krish, 1979), which has been translated into over 1300 languages and has reportedly led to more conversions than any other evangelistic tool in history. Its statistical success, however, tends to defect questions of worth as a medium of vernacular translation. Based on a critical analysis of its content and ambiguous examples of its use internationally, this paper argues that in spite of its success and the ongoing translation of its script into local languages, the flm’s untranslated visual dynamics—sustained by competing tendencies to universalize and particularize—may potentially perpetuate a Christendom ethos. Te paper concludes by drawing attention to an indigenous Indian Jesus flm (Karunamayudu, 1978), suggesting a path for the future of visual media in the vernacular spread of world Christianity. Examining the way in which the spectator is prompted by certain traditions of cinematic language and interpretation, this dissertation demonstrates how the representation of the Jesus in cinema must by definition always insinuate the sacrosanct, even if the symbol or image is presented in a context perceived to be secular. -

The latest edition is also accessible as a pdf on our Staff Web. If this is your first time to GWS and you’re wondering where to start, or you’d like a quick review, here are my top 10 GWS entries for you to master: God Jesus Film® and “JESUS” film prayers salvation decisions Scripture sexism slang staff member trademarks Besides the A-Z Main Section of entries, there are two appendices — Appendix A is titled “Special Word Problems”; Appendix B is “Archived Cru Terms.” Appendix A can be especially helpful for writers — and for editors helping writers improve their craft. Appendix B consists of terms that were once used in Cru, and were in the Main Section, but are no longer in current usage in Cru. For some, this appendix can have historical value. Both appendices follow the Main Section. This Introduction is followed by a one-page “How to Use This Handbook,” which in turn is followed by the section “Updates and New Entries in This Edition”.
