Many of them are victims of the choices they or others made, which is how their lives become interesting. I aim to see if there is any basis in reality for some of the situations and fears that happen. I also mean that Palahniuk thinks people are afraid of the wrong things, and afraid of too many things in general, and will approach this theory in my discussion. V VI Introduction This thesis has been through an abundance of versions and changed shape and content very many times over the years; from being all psychoanalysis to pure close reading, and ended with a study of victims, fears and reactions. In the end, the amount of close reading that has gone into it has bypassed the use of theory. This is mostly a reaction to past criticism to my over-use of critics, and focusing on that rather than the texts at hand. I find my time disposition in the production process of this paper to be shame, but life will sometimes get in the way of good intentions. As such, I hope that you, dear reader, find my efforts not in vain and take some interest in what my efforts have produced. -

The term “affair” did not connote merely an injustice but the process through which a perceived wrong became the object of mobilized public opinion. Most famously, for the Jews, there were the Damascus, Mortara, and Dreyfus affairs. All three placed Jews in conflict with the Catholic Church. The emergence of these affairs was one facet of a new political culture constituted by the reformed franchise, by petitions, public meetings, and a press which together constituted “public opinion”.1 Evangelical Protestants offered Jews support in these struggles. The nature of this support has become the subject of growing but divergent interest among scholars. Nadia Valman has explored the figure of “the Jew” in the evangelical imagination. She highlights the gendered ambivalence of evangelical representations of “the Jew”. She draws attention to the repeated iteration of the dual images of the “good” (spiritual and feeling) Jewess and the “bad” (materialistic and legalistic) Jew.2 In contrast to this approach, which points to an irreducible ambivalence in evangelical attitudes, recent books by Donald Lewis and by Hilary and William Rubinstein, reach unreservedly positive conclusions. Lewis deprecates what he sees as “an article of faith” among scholars “that the professed love of Jews by Christians is in some way a form of antisemitism, in spite of all evidence to the contrary.” The Rubinsteins highlight what they regard as a powerful and neglected tradition of Christian philosemitism.3 The 1 Miles Taylor, “John Bull and the Iconography of Public Opinion in England c. -

SCJR 14, no. 1 (2019): 1-18 The Mortara Affair and the Question of Thomas Aquinas’s Teaching Against Forced Baptism MATTHEW TAPIE [email protected] Saint Leo University, Saint Leo, FL 33574 Introduction In January 2018, controversy over the Mortara affair remerged in the United States with the publication of Dominican theologian Romanus Cessario’s essay de- fending Pius IX’s decision to remove Edgardo Mortara, from his home, in Bologna.1 In order to forestall anti-Catholic sentiment in reaction to an upcoming film, Cessario argued that the separation of Edgardo from his Jewish parents is what the current Code of Canon Law, and Thomas Aquinas’s theology of baptism, required.2 For some, the essay damaged Catholic-Jewish relations. Writing in the Jewish Review of Books, the Archbishop of Philadelphia, Charles Chaput, lamented that Cessario’s defense of Pius revived a controversy that has “left a stain on Catholic- Jewish relations for 150 years.” “The Church,” wrote Chaput, “has worked hard for more than 60 years to heal such wounds and repent of past intolerance toward the Jewish community. Universidad Católica de Valencia San Mártir) [email protected] 151 Francisco Collado-Rodríguez’s edited collection of essays on Chuck Palahniuk’s fiction adds to the growing academic interest in the writer’s work and, following on from likeminded compendiums published by Cynthia Kuhn & Lace Rubin and by Jeffrey Sartain in 2009, intends to broaden the focus of earlier studies which gave almost exclusive attention to Palahniuk’s debut novel, Fight Club (1996). Although the three essays that constitute Part I of Collado-Rodríguez’s collection are still dedicated to exploring the now well-trodden path of Fight Club analysis, the editor opens up and simultaneously demarcates the scope of the discussion by focusing an equal number of essays on Palahniuk’s 1999 work, Invisible Monsters (Part II) and his fourth novel from 2001, Choke (Part III). Such a concentration of attention on Palahniuk’s early fiction makes sense —in fact, Collado-Rodríguez insists that the three novels chosen for study are “highly representative of the writer’s particular style and insights” (1)— and yet the absence of any commentaries dedicated to Survivor (1999), Palahniuk’s second published work, seems rather anomalous. Indeed, Survivor is something of an elephant in the room, its omission never explained by Collado-Rodríguez, who only comments that it “garnered acclaim among readers and critics, helping to reinforce Palahniuk’s position in the category of cult writer” (2). INTRODUCTION In July, 1980, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) decided to grant United States asylum to Walter Polovchak pursuant to the 1980 Refugee Act.2 Five years later, on July 17, 1985, the Dis- trict Court of Illinois declared this grant of asylum void on the ground that the INS's asylum procedure, under which Walter had obtained his grant of asylum, had violated his parents' rights to due process under the fourteenth amendment of the United States Constitution. -

Reading his texts requires a particular disposition on the part of the reader, who is asked to leave the comfort zone, and to enter a universe where we are confronted with the darkest side of a reality which is undeniable, but hardly ever put in the forefront. The narrative world of Palahniuk is thus made up of marginal characters: outlaws, transvestites, addicts (drug addicts, sex addicts, alcoholics), etc. However, instead of treating these transgressive characters as the exception, they become the norm. The concept of normalcy is immediately reversed in a fiction where nothing is what it seems at first sight. And yet, although we may find in his novels stories about “ex-centric” people and situations, we never find a critique from the narrator or the author. Palahniuk defines this as “writing without passing judgment” (Stranger than Fiction). This writing style has been classified as minimalist, but the thematic in his work is rather the opposite, being excessive in all possible ways. As Collado points out, “Violence, self-destruction, parental absence, pornography, the crossing of gender and body limits, are favorite themes of Palahniuk’s fiction since his first published novel” (6). All of these subjects are explored in the chapters that appear in the book. Published by Bloomsbury, Francisco Collado’s volume offers a study of the controversial and bestselling author who is becoming more and more respected by the academic world, as evidenced by the recent publications of two studies on his work, such as Jeffrey Sartain’s Sacred and Immoral: On the Writings of Chuck Palahniuk (2008) and Cynthia Kuhn’s and Lance Rubin’s Reading Chuck Palahniuk: American Monsters and Literary Mayhem (2009). -

Chapter 1 The Modern Church A man jumped from the crowd—a knife shimmered. Count Rossi’s scream was loud, but brief. The pope’s friend and now political colleague was suddenly on the ground, dying, stabbed with a dagger in the neck as he ascended the assembly hall stairs to present his plan for a new con- stitutional order. Rossi had been warned. The anger was tangible ever since Pius IX had withdrawn the papal army from the First Italian War of Independence. Violence had broken out in the streets of Rome, and Count Rossi had been declared an enemy of the people. That’s why none of the Civic Guards who witnessed his murder in the courtyard made any attempt to arrest the killer. Whatever His Holiness might say, it was nec- essary to get him out of Rome. Thankfully, the King of the Two Sicilies had offered him refuge. Pius escaped to Gaeta, about seventy-five miles south, disguised as an ordinary priest. Giving government addresses to a papal parliament was not some- thing popes or their assistants were used to doing. For centuries popes had governed their territory as monarchs, gaining vital protection for the Church against hostile kings, dukes, and nations. But when Giovanni-Ma- ria Mastai-Ferretti was elected Pope Pius IX in 1846, the world around him was moving toward parliamentary governments. The world was changing fast, in ways both good and bad. The sobriquet “first modern pope” has been applied to various popes of the recent and not-so-recent past. Pius IX probably deserves it most, though he would have wanted it least. -
