HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Friends of the Ball’s Bluff (FoBB) is a non-profit group of volunteers, affiliated with the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NOVA Parks), whose purpose is stewardship and interpretation of Ball’s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park. FoBB’s goals are to complement, contribute to, support, encourage use of, and promote historical interpretation and environmental conservation of the battlefield park.

In 2000, NOVA Parks issued a call for volunteer battlefield guides. In March of that year, James Morgan, Richard Gillespie, and Bill Wilkin among others, met in Red Rock Park, Leesburg and formed FoBB. James Morgan conducted the first official guided tour in May 2000, and regular guided tours began to be offered shortly thereafter. Membership grew and took on additional tasks at the park, including trash pickup, mulching, and maintenance of the trails in the core battlefield area. The Friends of Ball’s Bluff was officially organized in 2011, in conjunction with commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Ball’s Bluff on October 21, 1861. Membership is open to anyone 18 or over who has an interest in historic preservation and the goals of FoBB.
