Numeral System in Kabonglo
================================================================= Language in India www.languageinindia.comISSN 1930-2940 Vol. 19:7 July 2019 ================================================================ Numeral System in Kabonglo Loitongbam Sarankumari Devi Ph.D. Scholar Assam University, Silchar [email protected] ================================================================== Abstract The present paper is an attempt to describe some of the morpho-syntactic aspects of numeral system in Kabonglo (mainly focus on the language spoken in Kabongram village or Tangkhul Hundung Khullen of Phungyar sub-division of Ukhrul district of Manipur). Kabonglo is one of the dialects of Tangkhul which is mainly spoken in Kabongram village of Phungyar sub-division in Ukhrul district of Manipur. Approximately, Kabongram or Tangkhul Hundung Khullen has 138 households with the total of 640 people of which 340 are male and 300 are female. Furthermore, the same dialect is also spoken in Laikoi Ching, Sopleng, and Island villages in Senapati district of Manipur. Like many other Tibeto-Burman languages, numeral system in Kabonglo is mainly of the decimal type however, the vigesimal system is also found in the language. Structurally, numerals in the language can be categorised into seven major types namely, (i) cardinal (ii) ordinal (iii) fractional (iv) multiplicative (v) distributive (vi) restrictive and (vii) approximate. Syntactically, the numerals always follow the head nouns without any exception. Keywords: Kabonglo, Kabongram, Tangkhul Hundung Khullen, Tangkhul, Tibeto-Burman, Ukhrul district, Manipur, Numerals, Decimal, Vigesimal, Compound. 1. Introduction Tangkhul is one of the tribal languages of Manipur which belongs to the Kuki-Chin Naga subgroup of the Tibeto-Burman family (Grierson, 1903). Tangkhul has many dialects. Arokianathan (1987) noted that there are 219 Tangkhul villages and each village has its own dialect or speech form named after the village. -

D Scholar , Social Work Department , Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth Pune. ABSTRACT The Tribal communities are the most marginalized group in India as per their disadvantages and exploitation by the outsiders. The peace and harmony of the Tangkhul community are disturbed by continuous violation act committed by various Arm forces and insurgents in the district. It is the responsibility of the government to tackle human rights violation and focus on the grievances faced by the Tangkhul community. Due to implementation of AFSP Act 1958 Manipur state has been suffered under the power of Arm Forces. Many innocent lives have been taken by the Indian Arm forces resulting to increase in widows and orphans. Youth life has been vulnerable and risked due to intense suspect and torture given by the Arm forces. Exploitation towards the Tangkhul community and denial of human rights should not be taken as granted they should be safeguarded equally as Indian citizen. KEY WORDS : National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Armed Forces Special Powers Act, (AFSPA), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Human Rights Violation. INTRODUCTION Manipur state is one of the eight sister’s state of Northeast India with the total population of about 2.6 million, inhabiting more than 30 indigenous communities with unique multiple culture. Since the implemented of AFSP Act in 1980 at present there are roughly 100,000 Indian armed forces in Manipur not including Manipur state police commando units. -

18/6/44. No. 7 NOT TO BE PUBLISHED OR BROADCAST BEFORE 2.30 P.M. D.B.S.T. WEEKLY REVIEW OF THE BURMA FIGHTING. The week ending Friday,June 16th, has been one of continued fierce fighting in all sectors of the Burma front. Monsoon conditions are now general but, though air have operations been of necessity restricted to some extent, there has been no slacken- ing in the land effort. General Stilwell’s Chinese-American forces in North Burma have been slowly press- ing the enemy back, despite stiff resistance in both the Mogaung Valley and the Myitkyina areas. Chinese troops have completely encircled Kamaing. Ground gained just South of Mogaung has been consolidated and the village of Pin Hmii nearby is firmly held since its capture by the Chindits in the bitter fight for Myitkynia, North Burma’s largest town. Chinese and American units have repeatedly beaten off counter-attacks. after overcoming enemy fortified points inside the town. Other units have been closing in on the town from the North, West and South. South of the town and East of the Irrawaddy, the Chindits have been fighting hard, and in one recent engagement killed more than a hundred Japanese. In the Mogaung area considerable Japanese equipment, including artillery pieces and ammunition, has been captured. Inhabited places including Chakrao six miles West of Kamaing, Kadon, East of Tumbonghka and Zigyun, East of the river and a mile North of Kamaing, have been occupied by our troops. The fight around Mogaung. General Lentaigne’s forces in taking Pin Hmii seized the and fled. -
