In Memoriam — remembering Kaz Reed and Doug Kraner Page 61 2 2015-2016 Our Season Box Office This year’s season saw the Department of Theater double down on its commitment to present new works from fresh voices and underrepresented populations. The lack of productions with high name recognition means we did not draw blockbuster audiences, but the strong response from those that did attend confirmed for us that reaching out to new or under-served audiences is worth the effort. We further demonstrated our commitment to this idea by making our school matinee of Collidescope 2.0, a powerful work that engaged important questions about our country’s troubled racial history, free to all students. In the sell-out crowd were students from traditionally-underserved communities who reacted powerfully to the play’s important message. Our aim was to learn about who our audience is, where people learn about us, and what their priorities are in the arts. This year’s results were in large part confirmations of the patterns that have begun to emerge in the two previous years’ results. We found that our audience members are split between college students and seniors, are enthusiastic arts consumers, and are strongly affiliated with the Five Colleges and most especially UMass. We also saw, again, that our top audience-getter is word of mouth, whether from friends and relatives in productions, fellow arts consumers, or faculty recommendations/assignments. Expense and schedule were cited as the top barriers to attendance last year and continue to be this year.

At the same time, there are clear differences between the Nordic countries regarding their national images. The purpose of this study is to a examine the relationship between ideas of the Nordic and national images through a qualitative study of brand manifestations on Nordic web portals for foreign visitors. Design/methodology/approach – The two guiding research questions are: How do Nordic branding strategies and national stereotypes impact on nation-branding content toward visitors in the Nordic region? What traces of the Nordic as a supranational concept can be found when the Nordic is translated into concrete national brand manifestations? The analysis focuses on brand manifestations such as brand visions, codes of expression, differentiation, narrative identity and ideologies.

  • Camp 2.0: a Queer Performance of the Personal
Communication, Culture & Critique ISSN 1753-9129 ORIGINAL ARTICLE Camp 2.0: A Queer Performance of the Personal Aymar Jean Christian Department of Communication, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA 19104, USA Camp, a style of performance in queer subcultures, is being reimagined in the online video portal of YouTube. Online performers—mostly young and queer—have infused camp with a neoliberal sense of individuality, emotional authenticity, and personal development, thereby challenging historical understandings of camp as wholly ironic and disengaged or politically charged. These shifts in self-presentation are reflected in statements made by performers in interviews and in the videos posted by these vloggers. doi:10.1111/j.1753-9137.2010.01075.x Britney Houston’s career shift came rapidly. Performing onstage as ‘‘Angel’’ in Rent, Houston started touring gay bars across the country, performing in drag for the very first time to benefit local gay causes. Discovering an untapped form of self-expression, Houston soon adapted her drag performance from the community-oriented space of the gay bar to the personal space of YouTube. The journey of Britney Houston from the traditional world of camp in bars—public yet impersonal—to the new world of online queer performance—public yet personal—marks a shift in the history and development of camp. Spurred by YouTube’s structure and broader social trends, I argue camp perform- ers like Houston are infusing sincerity, emotion, and deeper meanings of selfhood into ‘‘camp.’’ Camp, a decades-old convention among gay and queer performers, has a rich and complicated history, its meanings and forms periodically shifting and constantly debated.

IDENTITY AND SOLIDARITY IN ONLINE COMMUNITIES: QUEER IDENITIES AND GLEE Katie M. Buckley A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music August 2014 Committee: Katherine Meizel, Advisor Kara Attrep Megan Rancier © 2014 Katie Buckley All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine Meizel, Advisor Glee, a popular FOX television show that began airing in 2009, has continuously pushed the limits of what is acceptable on American television. This musical comedy, focusing on a high school glee club, incorporates numerous stereotypes and real-world teenage struggles. This thesis focuses on the queer characteristics of four female personalities: Santana, Brittany, Coach Beiste, and Coach Sue. I investigate how their musical performances are producing a constructive form of mass media by challenging hegemonic femininity through camp and by producing relatable queer female role models. In addition, I take an ethnographic approach by examining online fan blogs from the host site Tumblr. By reading the blogs as a digital archive and interviewing the bloggers, I show the positive and negative effects of an online community and the impact this show has had on queer girls, allies, and their worldviews. iv This work is dedicated to any queer human being who ever felt alone as a teenager. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to extend my greatest thanks to my teacher and advisor, Dr. Meizel, for all of her support through the writing of this thesis and for always asking the right questions to keep me thinking. I would also like to thank Dr.
